I 4 - ~ _»_ Ocieftcif "Attic co. Vining Hickory.—W43 witnessed oh M 012• t day last, enact of daring heroism, which we never saw -equalled. The flag-rope on our Young Hickory pole had got jammed between the pulley and the staff, at ;';',tie top of the pole. It was uecessary . to loosen it be fore the Democratic nag could be raised to its proud eminence. Various expedients weretried, and many suggested. Finally Mr Owen Sturdevant, a young man nearly 21 years of age, declared that he could 86- cend the pole; and tit something in his noble counte nanceindueed most of the by-standers to believe that he ccinkltio it,sure enough. Accordingly, he attempted the daring 'feat, and succeded in the auempt. He ereonde4 one hundred and fifty feet, to the top of the pole; nod while there fa,,tened on a new set of hal yard lie then gave three cheers for Polk and Del :. la descended in safety, having remained at and the top of the pole for full two hours. During ..a whole period, he exhibited not the least symp toms of fear or hositation. At one time he stood on thOop of the main pole, with his hand carelessly on Staff, apparently as much nt his ease as if he hatfbeen Standing on the pavement; and when at the very top of the flag stuff which it was feared would bait with his weight, he would frequently look below with the most perfect equanimity. A feat-requiring mote cool courage and firmness, we never witnessed. [Springfield(lll.) Register. nr The great improvements in'iron manufactures in this country, v ill yet developt that great staple of Pennsylvania's wealth. An . iron canal boat has been put upon the Erie canal, by one of the Rochester forwar ders, and the advantages which it possesses over boats constructed of wood will doubtless lead to an extensive use of that material for the construction of canal ves sels. There was used in frame and siding sheets, 14 tans of iron—the siding being one quarter of an inch thick ; there were IXOO days' work -expended on it—the beat costing $4,000. She carries 1.7 tons more than a boat of like dimensions constructed of wood. There have been, of late, a great many of boats built of ircn, which are much superior to wood, and in Boston, al ready, iron pavements me being made. In the long settled districts houses ‘vill, douhtless, before ten years, bo constructed of iron, as they are at this day in Wales.
