The Alpacha is a wool-bearing animal, tratigenions toSouth America, and is one of fear trade tie* which bear general points of tesemblance to each other. The Lama, one of these varieties, ha's been long ittiown, and often described; but it is only within a firw years that the Alpacha has been considered of abet la Importance to merit particular notice. dlaberutetbs of the wool of the Alpacha is black, the redlaillibile being partly white, red and grizzled. It is eaves/ Jong staple, often reaching twelve inches, and resembles soft glossy hair by whicb character is not loseby dyeing. The Indians in the South American mountains manufacture nearly all their clothing from this vionLand are enabled to appear in black dresses, without the aid of e dyer. Both the Lariat and Al va:lM are, perhaps, even more valuable to the natives as twists of burden than wool-bearing animals, and the theofistinacy of them is well known. The importance of aniinaltuurbeen already considered by the English, in their hat, woolen, and stuff trade, and an essay on the • subject has been published by Dr. Hamilton, of Lon don, from which some athese details are collected. The woHliaor remarkable, being a jet black g10w... iiilk-hlus hair, that it is fitted for the production of the flexible fabrics differing front all others, occupying a medium position between wool and silk. It is now mingled with other materials in such a singular manner, that• while a particular dye will .affect those, it will leave, the-Alpacha wool with original black color, andtites give rise to great .diversity. But your paper of Saturday contained a notice of a "thril l* iticklent," that tight be attended with dangerous consequences. I allude to the use of vinegar as an amhime to opium. Nothing could accelerate the ef fects ofopium more certainly, rapidly and fatally, than vinegar; and when a Turk wishes to commit suicide, his usual course is to take his ordidary dose of opium, and then swallow a cup of vinegar. This converts the opium into an acetate, one of the most active and vir ulent of poisons. et your readers, be cautioned against vinegar as an antidote to laudanum. DR.
