Mit 1a Atoning Poet. • /PITTSBUILOH.PA. EBDAY MORNING, JULY 30, 1844 PITTSBURGH BOARD OF TRADE. CONIIIITiti FOR JULY. 1 • Josiah King, J. Carothers, W. J. Howard (17Vn our outside pages, will bo found a tale called tlM•Tragedy of the and some beautiful Poetry by Amen,. bututst.—The Coroner yesterday held an inquest on the body of a man unknown to the jury, who was killed by the machinery of a new boat, on which he had just been hired. He was supposed to be about 25 years of age, clothed in a grey cloth roundabout, blue pantaloons, and new check shirt; supposed to be a boatman. • DZISOCRATIC MISTING IN ALLEGRENT CITY.- There waa a great meeting of the Democrats of Alla ghee" :ay, on Saturday evening last, in the new Mar ket-House. According to announcement, after the meeting was organised, Col. B. B. TAYLOR, of Ohio, was called on to sPisak. He addressed the 'meeting for nearly throe hours, in a strain of most effective eloquence, discus. sing with equal ability, the first Principles of democrat ic policy, and the issues involved in the present contest. The Whigs tried all manner c.f expedients to disturb the meeting. Loud talking, scraping of feet end scuf fling were industriously kept up nearly all the evening. One fellow, we are told, even went so far as to try to get up a fight, to disperse the meeting. All these schemes of the rowdies failing, the more decent portion of the party began to annoy the speaker by asking questions. When he was talking of the Veto, and the Bank and its corruptions, Sm. one great whir asked, 'Where was Mr DALLAS, then.' Mr. Taylor replied, 'Obeying the instructions of his constituents, a thing which Mr CLAY tartans TO DO, when he was in etructre by his state to vote for the repeat of the Bank. rapt bill.' We hope our federal friend was satisfied with this answer. 'Tell na something about the Tariff,' said a coon who had been all evening in as much agony as a 'toad un. ,der a harrow,' and thought be could gain something by making Mr T AYLoa change his subject. 'Ofcourse,' said Mr T 1 and he began by painting CLAY'S southern face on this question, and proved before he bed finish ed that no sincere friend of the Tariff could go for the man who had 'throttled' it. The meeting was unusually large and enthusiastic. During all the contest of 1890, so peat and oversha dowing was the influence of the whigs in Allegheny that no meeting that could compare in number or spi rit with the one of Saturday, could be got up in that ci ty. The whigs, were mortised and astounded, as their whole conduct during and since the meeting evinced in the plainest manner. Tux GALLANT Wows. —On Sunday last, the ju venile Democrats of the Fourth ward, Allegheny, rai sed a Hickory Pole, and ornamented it with a beauti ful flag. The youngsters felt quite proud of their a chievement, but on Sunday morning they found the pole lying on the ground, and their flag—•he stirs and stripes—trampled in the dust. After the little fellows had gone to bed, wearied with their exertions in bring ing in and putting up the pole, the gallant Whigs came and cut it down. The deed was as courageous as it was honorable, and we have no doubt but that the gen tlemen who perpetrated it, imagine they have done a very brave act. It is well for them that the boys did not catch them, or they might have discovered that hi'-k -ory can be used for other purposes besides making liberty poles. I. 0. 0. P.
