TIM CZLZHHATIONS OF Till 4TH.—The 68th anni
versary of 'lndependence Day; passed off very plea
santly in this neighborhood; we have no recollection of
a similar occasion when there appeared to be such
general enjoyment among all classes. We have never
'mown so many parties to the country as this year, and
from the accounts they give of their excursions, we
have no doubtthey all had a pleasant time of it.
F/LlR.—The Fair in aid of the Fifth Presbrterian
church will close to-night. The articles are of the
ntostsuperb kind, and as it is the last chance they will
have, it is to be hoped that none will neglect going.—
We can wore them they will never regret it. as, to
say nothing of the praiseworthy object many of the ar
ticles are curiosities, and well worth seeing. We un
derstand that some Canary Birds are to be sold at Auc
tion to-night. Here's a chance!
BOAT Recs.—A race came off on the morning of
the 4th, between the Richard Biddle and the William
King Barge Clubs, for $5O a side; distance 5 miles.
The purse was won by the King with ease, and in
good time.
H• 1 PINGTON'S DIORAMAS.—There was a perfect
jam at the Theatre on the 4tb. Many went away in
the evening, unable to get seats. There is to be a
performance this afternoon at 3 o'clock, and at the
usual time in the evening. The bills are very aurae
live.
WAS CLARENDON'S READINGS AND RECITATIONS
—The public will learn from a card in this morning's
pipet, that Miss CLARENDON!, has, at the solicitation
of many of berfriends, coneluded to give an entertair s
meet of Readings and Recitations at Concert Hall on
Monday evening. The selections made for the even
ing are from the most popular English authors, and, as
they will be given by Miss C., cannot fail to please all
who may attend. The entertainment will be one of
the most intetesting that has been given in our city this
season and it should ensure a large audience.
Cot:caul- HALL.- - It will be seen by the bill, that
the price for admission to the performances at the
Hallhass been reduced to 25 cents. Miss INCE wil l
<lance this evening. The company performing at the
Hall, embraces some of the best theatrical talent in the
country; the dancing of Miss Ince is almost unrivalled.
No doubt this reduction of prices witt be properly ap
preciated by • the public and result to the advantage of
the managers.
LIIMC/Cal3 OF Gov. Pots.—A gentleman just ar
rived from New\ork presented us a most excellent
lithograph likeness of Gov Polk. Those who are well
acquainted with Mr P consider it a roost perfect like
ness, and in other respects it is a finished picture. A
few copies have been brought on and any of our demo
cratic friends who wish to procure a liken":s of the
2exl President, can be accommodated by pulling at ou r
office.

tention of the Street Commissioner to the filthy chat

for every hour. In fact, it does not appear to be pos

Buoreptiter of Joe Sniiik.—We have some little
additional intelligence from Nauvoo. Gen. Jot: Sx rrit
and the Nauvoo Council, or the persons who destior
Jed the "Expositor" office, are said to have surrender
wed their persons to the officers in whose hands the
«writs against them were pima'. They were taken to
Carthage on Monday, where they arrived about 12
.o'clock az night. An examination was to be had next
diar--they will probably be held to bail and let go

UPPMr. Ford has been held to bail in the sum of
