JAMES BLAKELY, JOHN J. MITCHELL alit Wally Alorning post. THE OLDEST MINISTER IN THE WORLD. The Rev Mr Harvey, a Baptist clergyenee.who bsi reached the venerable age of 109 years, le still living a; Frankton, N Y and is said to be engaged More or less, every Sabbath, in his holy profession; Tbef Rev, Thos Houston, in the Baptist Register, gives an ais• count of a recent visit to him, in company with Deices; Rufus Smith, in which he says; On arriving at the house; we inquired for father Harvey, and were informed that he was !Amadei "iota. toes in a field about half a mile distant. I going to the field to see him, but was the wsy was exceedingly bed, still I thought I might 'follow a man 109 years of age. I had notproceeded far, bow, ever, before I was swamped, and gladly returned noi the house. The old gentleman, being informed of our arrival, soon came in, but little fatigued, and greeted us most cordially. After being seated he related correctly many chn cumstances connected with our first acquaintance, naming the. text from which I preached, also the oim from which he preached in the afternoon of the same day,(five years ago) together with many other inci• dents, which occurred previous to my leaving Frank. fort. It is certainly very remarkable that a person so old should remebet so distinctly eventsof so remote a date. lie still preaches occasionally. bat I am in, formed that there is not always as much connection in his discourses as when you heard him at this place three years since. lie still performs considerable labor—thought be should cultivate half an acre of potatoes this season —last year he thought he should have raised a bun. dred bushels, if the season had been good. He is bowed over more than when I saw him last,' but his step is quick, his hearing and eyesight good.— He read to us from the bible without glasses Au alma, nac was first banded ti im, but he said he wanted ;bible. The next day, (Sabbath,) he rode nearly five miles over a very rough road to meeting, took his seat in the pulpit all day. made one prayer ehich was distinctly heard ovr r a large congregation. After meeting, be returned home, which made about nine miles treve4 in one day. What admonition to those Christina, whtt remain away from meeting for trifling causes. In many respects I think Father Harvey the most remarkable man of the age. He is doubtless the old, est minister of the gospel now living, No man of his age can probably endure mote than he; his retentive memory, hia strong voice, clear eye, sight and good bearing, his physical and mental energy and above all, his deep-toned piety cannot fail of pro. ducing a lasting impression upon the minds of all whq become acquainted with him. LATE FROM HAVANA. More Disclosures.—The Light of the Reef" of the 15th inst., published at Key West, Fa., contains the followingt IV° are informed by a gentleman just arrived front Havana that an excitement is still raging there, and hundreds of free negroes and mulattoes are leaving daily. New schemes fur taking possession of the is land have been developed which, had they not been detected, would most certainly have led to as great a massacre as that of the island of St. Domingo. They were brought to light by the execution of the captain of a band of robbers. It appears that a few days be, fore his execution he sent to the Captain General, in forming him that on condition of his granting big par; don he would impart to him information which would be the means of saving the island from a general mast sacre. And on the refusal of that officer to listen to him, he sent for a lawyer, to whom he gave his papers, making him swear that he would destroy them imme diately after his execution. Among the papers left in charge of the lawyer, NILS an agreement and a plan for the massacre, drawn up and signed by sia or seven hundred of the most influential men of the place. The lawyer immediately conceived a plan by which he could make his fortune—and accordingly, he went to nearly all the persons whose names were on the parer,., and received a large bribe from each for his silence. One of them, however. was too poor to pay his de mands, and him he had brought up before the authori ties, where he confessed the whole plot. The whole of them were immediately attested, the lawyer wit tEe others, and are to be executed-in a few days, Their plan was to give poison to the soldiers, by ba, king it in their bread, and providing the negro wo man with knives and such other weapons as could be. concealed, which were to be used on the private ant i lies as soon as the poison began to take effect upon the soldiery, and thus despatch the whole white popula tion at the same time. The same gentleman informs us that on the day be left, six hundred free negroes, took their departure on hoard a British steamer, amidst the curses and exe crations of an infuriated populace. We have received late files of Havana papers, het are unable to glean any thing from them, they being prohibited from giving any account of the insurrection. ST. DOMINGO We learn from an officer of the United States NA{- vy, who arrived ou Wednesday from Jamaica, that the civil war is still raging in the Island of & Do: mingo between the blacks and browns, and us the num ber of the former is greater than the latter by 20 to I t the browns are flying from the different ports to Jae moica, for the preservation of their lives, leaving their own property, as well as that of foreigners, consigned to them, (of which there is s great amount) to the mercy of the half civilized eogroes. At present the sloop-of•war Prehle is the only protection we have for the safety of the property and lives of our fellow citi zens in that unfortunate island. Cul. Harrison, Amer ican consul at Jamaica, gave the first intelligence 141 her commander, and he proceeded without delay-to Aux Cayes. 'When our infornaant left Jamaica, it was understood that the commercial agent and gri t .ish sill had taken refuge on board the flreblis, and diet at least 300 persons bad been taken out of prison by the negro chieftain Action, who caused them all to be whip ped, whipping many of them with his own hands, after which the surNivors were again sen; tco prison. AN cLoiogra PICTURE We extract the following frog the recent aridness of the Hon George Bancroft, the distiegnished historian, delivered, at the great Democratic Mass Meeting, at Concord, New Hapshire. on the 6th of June. Praia, from such a source is precious, indeed: In presenting to you the name of James K Polk, of Tennessee. f•ir the office of Presidenp my hunt word, said Mr Bancroft. is this—his private life is pure. From boyhood, the career of James K Polk has been unsullied. At the University he was noticed foe his, sobriety and diligence, obtaining thehighest honors in his class. Educated in the bosom of a pious family, and in the Presbyterian church, he bas ever by his ex ample manifested, by the mast regular attendance, the truest respect for the institutions of public worship.— Ile is ignorant of every game of hazard; he knows no thing of cards; his band--I speak On the authority of men of honor, who live near him who know him well, and would not deceive mo—his hand hut peper beea raised against the life of his fellow wan. Without taking the pledge, and without pretension, he abstains from the nse of ardent spirits, and illustrates by his exam ple the virtues of strict temperance. In a word, his private character is unblemished 115 a Man and a Lelnistian. I say this reluctantly. ReliOon is the very best possessioe in the world, arul the last to ha s p o k en of.
