Republican. of Saturday week, notices .the dead, in that vicinity of Mr John Stufßebean, aged 109 years. He was born on the honks of the Hudson river, twelve miles from Albany, in the State of New York, February I , 4th, 1735. f here he married his first wife, whom he left with two children, when heenlistrd as a private in the Revolu tionary army, in which he set ved almost to the close of the war, when he was taken captive by the Indians who 'disposed of him to the British fora barrel (drum. Having remained a prisoner at Detroit a few months, while employed one day chopping wood, he and five of his fellow prisoners 'effected their escape, and only reached the Colonial settlements after three months of perilous adventure through the woods of a section of country that now constitutes the States of Ohio, Indi ana and Michigan. Ile was subsequently one of the first settlers in Bourbon county, Kentucky, and assist-1 ed in sawing with a whip saw,theplanks used in con- ! structing the first permanent frame buildingt here erect ed. He was blessed with a fine flow of animal spirits, and was generally cheerful. His eyesight was unim paired, almost to the lust, and he never had occasion for the use of spectacles. Ile never took a dose of medicine, and with the exception of the four days ill ness, immediately preceding his death, he was never rick, at least not seriously so. His wife, aged 82 years, survives him. ANNEXATION OF TEXAS At a meeting held on Tuesday evening, April 16, 1344, the following Resolutions were adopted: Resolved, That without diminction orparty, we are Wreconcilably opposed to the annexation or Texas to this Union, in every aspect which the project has yet assumes!. Resolved, That by its annexation, our country has nothing to gain, but every thing to lose. Resolved, That as American citizens, we are called upon by an enlightened consideration of the true in terests of the whole country—by a regard for our na tional faith and character—by our hostility to the in. teaseofslavery—and still more by out ardent deco : non to the Union, to the interests and principles of democratic liberty in its purity, to resist the project by every legitimate means in our power.
