will pass through our state almost without leasing a
trace of its existence.
Our great object i 3 to intercept this vast trade and
, travel in its transit, and at some proper point on the
.','noel road. We must tap that road and draw off its
:Q ( esjyantages to our own city, instead ofpermitting them
-follow on to Wheeling, and we must do it at some
point that will render us certain as to our object, and be
sufficiently economical to invite business in the Opera
tion with our united means. To such a project I pro
pose to call the attention of the public, and merely ask
nottadid perusal of my essays on the subject.

FROM Cutsw.—By the arrival of the ship Thomas
Capt. Graves, at New York, from Canton,
whenceahe sailed on the 18th of April,we have received
the following intelligence:
The French frigate Erigooe and the 'United States
frigate Constellation were at the Bogue. The command
et IS -bud gime. to Canton to have an interview with the
Chinese authorities. The Erigone saluted the English
flag at Hong Kong—the Constellation did not. The
c o mmander of the Constellation was right, according
to the friend of China, salutes not king doe until utter
the official proclamation that the treaty of Nankin had
been ratified.
A'. letter in the Register gives an account of some
disorders at Canton on the 12th of April, but they pro
dueeck no very serious results. The disturbance arose
between *VU'S "fast boat" men and the keeper& of a ga
minghowe. The Chinese soldiers interfered, to the
number of about two hundred; but taking part with the
gaming house people, they were attacked by the crews
of all the "(list boats." One oldie boatmen was killed
and another fatally wounded.
The people at Whampon had sent up a deputation to
remonstrate against the English being allowed to build
factories there. The English have no such intention.
