DAILY ORNING POST•
From Mu Pennsylvanian,
The National Convention.
The National Convention to nominate eandi
lates for President and Vico President, is beenias
inz daily a subject of iacreased interest. Titia
party, in general, look to such a convention to
settle definitely what candidate they shall support.,
presuming that it will not nominate a man Who -
d. es not sustain the principles of democrat} .
A question at present much agitated in oonner•
ion with Oil. subject, is that of the proper time foe
holdup the convention. Judging trout put ex
perience, we should say it would be best for the
interests ofdernocrucy to make the nomination at
either quite an early, or quite a late period,
Whenever it is made, our opponents will spare
neither pains nor money to excite discord and op
position in our own ranks. lithe umnieuttion be
made this year. before the rill elections, then the
first iheck of the efforts of disorganizers, should
they arise, will Le met at the elections of the
present year, and we all know that the power or
such nice lardy con'inues for two successive
elections. [knee, in that case, we nrav expect a,
strong and united party in 1844, purged of selfish
and restless spirits, wheee guide (decline is the
prospect of mere personal Myth.
if however, on the other hatid,it ahnoldtket be
thought expedient to hold the convention the press
cm year, then it would seem well to (lacer it until
the next year is consiekraLly advanced, and tiotil,
the probable time, or after the tithe of the uotni
uation of our iippunems. Thch the period Will
he too short before the election, for much to be
effected by those men whom we must always ex.
poet to find more or less numerous, and wee are
willing, either for pay float the enemy, or from
private pique, to misrepresent the acts of the cent.
ventLm, and thecliwracter or principles ofthe .Caltf••
d:date selected.
..
It would be well that this , question should be
determined ere luag,e,o that the choice of chile.
!gates might be gave:tied aocordiogly ; far whenev.
or the delegates du meet, it i. desirable that they
should come fresh and recently chosea from the
people. We perceive That the stains of Georgia.
and Missouri hake already chosen delegate; Irma
which it may be presumed that the &magma in
those states expect the , emtventrion to be sobs held.
far it would be a gross impropriety to - select dele
gates ett W to a colvention to be hold fifteen
months hence. The views of the people them.
selves mighy change as to the film as of the dele
gates in that length of time. Such a delay alter
tut. selection, would afford every opportunity for
intrigue and management, and it is not impossible
1 1 that some of the persons selected now might too
seduced loto open or secret alliance with the
whigs, before the assembling of the convention.
We would therefore say, let the time of the con.
vent•onf,ba promptly fixed accma ag t o 'simian: es
the prevalent wish of the party, and let the choice
of delegates he promptly made on the one hand,
or deferred on the other according to the result
of the decision.

sent by express to Mexico to Gen. Tom',

that they were the real representatives
