Fitzgerald, who wax ar. tasted on Wednesday in the Diamond market in the aet of picking the pocket of a lady, had a hearing before the Mayor yesterday morning. She was charged with the perpetration of seve rol other robberies that bad been committed du ring the day, and since her arrest robberies have come to light amounting In the aggregate to over .1,000, of aU of which she is claimed to be thepezpetrator. The prisoner is doubtless a professional pickpocket,- but it is hardly proba ble that she guilty of every robbery that has beeaisommitted in the market of late. The police succeeded in finding out her residence and ar rested her sister, whom they found there, as an accomplice In the robberies. After the exam ination of several witnesses Mix Fitzgerald's guilt was made evident and she was committed in default of 01,000 bail. Her sister, however, was discharged, with the understanding that she shouhl leave town on the next train, as Suffi cient evidence could not be brought against her to prove her guilty. It appears that the prisoner was assisted in her thefts by her husband, to whom she transferred the spoils, so that they would be safe in case of her arrest. This g en- Altman, as soon as he heard of the arrest, left for parts unknown. , The Fire Alarm Telegraph.—At a ape. chit Meeting of the Finmen's.Asiociation, held for the purpose of taking further action in rela tion to the proposed flee alarm telegraph, a com mittee of five were appointed to act conjointly with a committee on tire engines and hose in the examination of the system referred to. It was also moved that the Joint committee be empow ered brinvite tieveral gentlemen (who are not nieintiers of the Association) to accompany them to Cleveland in order to 'examine into the practical working of the system as It is in ope .ration in that city. The committee will proba bly start on their tour of examination tomor row. From this prompt action on the part of the city and the Firemen's Association it would appear that the system will be soon introdutied here. We do not entertain the least doubt as to the feasibility of the project in case the sys tem will prove satisfactory to the committee whir have been appeinted to examine• it in full operation. G.
