Our line now ex tends front its former left to Arm strong's mill, thence by the south bank Hatcher's creek to the point above named. At every point the enemy was found entrenched and his works ['taun ts!. No attack was made during the day further than to drive the pickets and car- ry the inside main work. Our casualties have been light, probably less than 200 killed, wounded and missing. • The mime is probably true of the enemy. We raptured, however, seven loaded teams on their way from Stone's creek, about a dozen beef cattle, a traveling forge and from seventy five to one bun Bred prisoners. On our right the battle extended well around towards the York town toad, without finding a point un guarded. I shall keep our troops out where they are until towards noon to morrow in hopes of inviting an attt ek. (Signed) 11. S. GRANT, - - . Oily Point, Oct 28.—The attack of General Hancock now that a report has won received proves to have been a de— o;ded success. He repulsed the enemy end maintained his position, holding the field till midnight, when he com menced withdrawing his forces. Orders had been given for the withdrawal of the d corps before the attack was made. We lost no prisoners except the usual stragglers who are always picked up.
