Being a stranger in the city she inquired of two men who wereitt the depot If they knew where she could obtain ac commodations for the night. They told her if she would accompany them to Allegheny they could secure her lodgings in the house of a friend, and supposing that they were honest in their intentions, she started with them. Upon arriving in Allegheny they attempted to 'com mit an outrage upon ha, person, and during the scuffle which ensued her little son received a severe blow in the forehead. The night police, seeing the souffle, hurried to the spot, when the assailants fled. They, however, succeeded in arresting one of them, tamed Ames Long, who was taken to the Mayor's office. Ye.terday he had a hearing before the Mayor and was tined twenty dollars, which he paid. The little boy, who WIZ severely injured, is withou t the May or's office, his mother being friends or means to procure him better accommodations. The bureau will be in Washington, under the charge of a controlling officer, Dr. U F. McDonald. One hundred and forty-seven postoffices, in va rious parts of the country, have been designated as "money order offices," but will be increased as circumstances may require. The New York office will do the banking burliness of the other offices; the money taken for orders everywhere will be sent there, and postmasters everywhete will draw on the New York postmaster for the funds they may need. J. W. Norton is in charge of the money order department in New York. In this State, Easton, Erie, Harrisburg, Hones. dale, bleadyille, Lewistown, New Castle, Phil adelphia,Pittsburgh, Pottsville. Communication —A widow latly, whorie hus bawl is in the field sends us a communication to which she complains of the way some members of our community express themselves when they say that they do not care how much the prices of clothing nii , l pros lmons are enhanced as long as this tsar Le continued. But, says she, where the wicked t rule the people mourn, and she, of course, must • bear her share of the general buffering. This communication Is °rill) of our at tention, and snows that more calamities are en tailed on the people than we are inclined to think. The men can bear all the difficulties of war whatever happens, as their pay must be in- creasea according to circumstances, but the sol dier's wife and widow, sonic of whom are too old to work, leel all the asperities of the times. The Washington County Fair.—The annual exhibition of the Washington County Art''cultural Society came ott' on Thursday and Friday of last week, and It is stated that Its result was by no means so successful as was anticipated. Those who are acquainted wilt alt the circumstances attending this fair inform us that the only explanation that can be given for the great paucity of entries Is the Introduc— tion of politics two the appointing of commit tees, and the general management of the socie ty. It is truly annoying to thine that politics should be mingled with the t/amens of an agri cultural associations, and no one could have expected that ao enterprise which was lnangu• rated wader such unfavorable auspices Would be attended with success. Sr. LOUIS, Oct. s.—The following re ply to a statement in the New York Times' Washington correspondence, tel egraphed from New York on Monday, is sent by request of Gen. Rosecrans: To the Agent of the Associated Press, 8;. Louis: The New York Times' Wash ington special says that Gen. Rosecrans is in some trouble. Gen. Rosecrans pronounces this a falsehood of some sin— ister character similar to those which were sent broadcast through the country on his removal from the Army of the Cumberland. Having seen the effects of these slanders remaining uncontra. dieted, he owes it to his words and him self to meet this promptly. (Signed) W. S. ROSECRANS, A train of 23 ears and 2 locomotives were captured by the rebels at Miller's Landing on the Pacific Rtilroad on Monday, and taken west with them. Heard Gasconade bridge was burning, and train ran into the river. One car contained 800 Sharpe's rifles which the rebels took. Considerable force were seen in Washington county yesterday moving west. Another body of rebels, supposed 800 strong, crossed the Mis souri liver below Nl,,erlan yesterday. Information of Price's movements was received to-day. NEW YORK, October 5.—A //end( correspondent with the cavalry on the I( ft of the army of the Potomac, says ot the cavalry tight on Saturday :—The reh els were led by Gen. Wade Hampton, and Generals Butler, W. H. Lee, Dear ing and Young, each with a brigade. They thought to secure an easy victory. They succeeded in driving our small force which was commanded by Gen Davies, from the lines of their slight dr-- fences and dismounting their brigades made a desperate attempt to dislodge us from a Mild line. Our lorce consisted of the Ist New Jersey, Ist Massachu setts, oth Ohic, 10th New York and a battalion of the Ist Pennsylvania with four guns. The fight was terrific. Time and again the rebels charged up to within a few feet of the line, and were hurried back with deadly showers of bullet , They then attempted a flank movement, at the same time charging the breast works, hut they met such a warm rece l i lion that they were glad to return. Their loss was heavy. As soon as it I was discovered that the enemy were falling back, our men climbed their breastworks, and, with a cheer, charged the flying rebels. Our loss was slight. NEW YORK, October 5.—A Tribune special, dated at Martinsburg on the 4th, says: The latest intelligence trom Gen. end Sheridan Is to Saturday morning. At that time his infantry were still at Harrisonburg, while his cavalry were east of the Blue Ridgy, reconnoi ering in the vicinity of Charlottesville. The rebel report of the disaster to our iavalry at Swifthead Gap, is untrue. Instead of meeting with a repulse, we gained a victory, captured about 100 Prisoners, and driving the rebels through Brown's Gap, which they had fortified. Rockfish and Brown's Gap have been strongly fortified by the rebels, and are defended by a considerable force. The position is tiankable on either side, and it is probable that the next information we get from Sheridan will come via Al exandria. Supply trains continue to go to the front, and there is direct indica ti )n that Martinsburg and Harper's Fer ry are to be abandoned as a basis of supplies.
