The enemy, having probably learned of the movement upon his right and rear, had commenced leaving his posi tion some two hours before our attack. His departure was so hasty that he was compelled to leave-efsteen guns and over one. thousand prisoners in our hands. Yesterday morning the pursuit of the enemy was promptly continued by our cavalry, and he was found in position at Mount Jaekstm, twenty-five Miles south of Fisher's Hill, where•he seems dispos ed to offer a stubbornresistance. Yesterday mointhel'arlybs rear was overtaken near Hawkins Bridge, by Averill, with a cavalry division and a brigade of Gen. Devin's and drove them towards Mount Jackson, where his en tire force was found in position. Major Laddy, commanding two battalions, was captured, with several privates. Our cavalry ymessed the enemy with great vigor and success until he brought forward an infantry division with artil lery, and they held them in check until the arrival of the Gilt Corps, which found them in the same position this morning, offering a stubborn resistance, General Averill Was relieved from duty with his division this morning and granted leave of absence fort wenty days. This order has caused a universal feel ing of amusement in 'hie artily, and it is generally thought that some question of rank between Averill and General Torbet Is involved, the former being the senior .officer, but the latter Chief of Cavalry of the Middle Division.
