FROM OUR FIRST EDITION More About Early's Retreat. ' NEW YORE, September 24.—A Her ald special, dated on the 22d from the right of Bliarid.s.v.'syrmy, - "ffilys that on the second morning, Tuesday, when Sheridan advanced ho found - .e enemy had not been idle during the ht, but t i on the contrary had taken adv tg ntage to add as much distance as possible be tween himself and the federals. • Still in moving up, we had to engage in skir mishing of a rather heavy character. This gave rise to reports, no doubt, that we were, as an army, fighting another battle. On 1 uesday our cavalry, both on the right and left, was active in attasiking the enemy's flank and harrassing his re treat. Our infantry, too, did good work to-day. We are again on the move. The forward movement this orning was attended with more Eighth) as we advanced. The report is that Gen. Early will make another stand at just ahead; but as we reach each point of "just ahead," Early's force is found to have retreated. Some say this forenoon that the line the rebels intend to fight it out on is, where the fork of the Shenandoah river crosses the Vally Pike. Our hope is that they will do so. In the last battle the loss in field offl cers to the rebels in killed and wounde I seems to have been extremely large. Sheridan's Victory in Washington. WASHINGTON, September has been ascertained that Early's scattered forces,or what is left of them, have abandoned the road to Stanton, and are retreating in disorder, via Culpepper and Gordonsville, directly towards Rich mond, leaving the road to Lynchburg unobstructed, while Lee is tumble to spare a malifrao? . 1 2i1,, - ivany to oppose the progress of the victorious Sheridan. The news from Sheridan's army this afternoon created wild excitement throughout the city. The capture of Fisher Hill, the great strong-hold and key to the upper pat of Shenandoah Valley, and the additional ofSixteen cannon and several thousand prisoners to the trophies already won by the vic torious army of Gen. Sheridan, is re garded here as conclusive evidence of the destruction of the rebel army in the valley, and the opening of the whole route to Lynchburg-, which necessarily must hrin,g about the speeedy evacua tion of Richmond or the capture of the rebel capital and Lee's whole army. There are in progress other Move ments, not proper to be disclosed now which tend to render this result prob• ble, within, perhaps, a very few days. - - Latest News from New Orleans. Mc- Neil, landsman, severely wounded. The fire was promptly returned from the boat, which reports that a shell exploded in the midst of the shore party. There are now about 8,500 prisoners confined at Point Lookout. Fifty refu gees crossed the river from the Virginia shore and succeeded in reaching that place. Some of them are from Rich , mond, and say the news of Early's first defeat had reached there and caused the greatest consternation and alarm. Rebel officers brought to Washington from &tint Lookout to be transfer. red to lorthern prisons will not believe that Sheridan has achieved victories in the Shenandoah valley, as proclaimed in official dispatches. As usual, when any unfortunate news is afloat, the grossest exaggeration prevail ed, until the following o cial disimtch from Gen. Lee was given out by the au thorities: Headguartere Army of Northern Vir ginia, Sept. 20.—Hon. James A. Seddon: Gen. Early reports that on the morning of the 19th the enemy advanced on Winchester, near which place he met his attack, which was resisted from ear ly in the day till near night, when he was compelled to retire. After night he fell back to Newtown, and this morning to Fisher's Hill. Our loss is reported to be severe. Major General Robbs and Brigadier General Gordon were killed while nobly doing their duty. Three pieces of artillery of King's battalion were lost. The trains and supplies were brought off safely. (Signed) LEE. The same paper, speaking of matters before Petersburg, says: On our extreme right and the enemy's left both parties continue to watch one another. with sleepless vigilance. Each returning day adds strength to the defensive work, and the tug of war, come when it may, will be one of the bloodiest of this very bloody contest. The Richmond Enquirer of the 22d gravely asserted that Early's position at Fisher's Hill was impregnable, from whence he would advance again on the NEW YORE, Sept. 25.—An army cor respondent of the. Herald states that the rebels changed - their troops in front of our lines in consequence of heavy de sertions. The shotted salute of the 22d pretty ef_ fectaally useb up the the rebels' Spring Hill battery, and Petersburg must have suffered. severely from the effects of dropping thirty shells a minute for thir ty minutes. The rebels hardly respond ed. NEW Yona, Sept. 24 —The Commer cial's Washington special says: Gen. Sheridan's prisoners are so numerous that it has been found necessary to send reinforcements to him to act as guard. The officers in Grant's army are betting that Petersburg will be in our possession in ten days. - - NEW YORK, Sept. 24.—The Herald gives a list of rebel officers captured by Sheridan at Opequan creek, comprising two colonels, seven lieutenant colonels, one major, nineteen captains and seven yt five lieutenants. BALTIMORE, Sept. 25.—A. large num bea of prisoners are arriving from Hai per's Ferry.
