Epyron:—A friend in Trubantams sent me au article letely published in the "Indianapolis Journal, headed "A nice 5.4 of men." The article is• reprinted from the New York Times, and is a. tissoci of pitiable ignorance and mWgnant faNeitood..• It is a malignant attack on thetrevelutiion cry family of the Lees of Virginim, , It says that the editor of the New York Times alleges that R. 11 Lee,it.he griind fat,her of the present R. E. Lee, "had the taint of treason on him:" i H. 11. Lee was not the grand-father of the preßer.t Gen. R. E.' Lee, of the rebel army. Gen. IL E. Lee's Nether was Gen. litrry Lee, often ealled "light horse Harry." The writers of the Jour nal and Times make him Gen. S E Lee's uncle. General Charles Lee, of the revolution, is said by Wt: Journal and Times to have been a relative (tithe Virginia family. This is a-Mistake; be war an Englishman by Walt and was not at all related to the family. Arthur Lee is mentioned as a great tincleufthe present Gen. Lie. Arthur Lee vas a brother of It. H. Lee: these Were about third cousins to General Harry Lee, the father of the present GeneraliLee. The writer for the Journal and Times speakes of Henry Lee, who,'ihe states, was a friend of General Jackson, and whom General Jackson. recomended to the Senate as Consul to Algiers, was an elder half brother ; not as uneie tolGen. It. E. Lee. ; So much for the Ignorance of biographical history exhibited by the w ritersol, the Journal and 4-ew York I'imcs. We will now briefly notice : the.fals hoods of these writers reepeCting the persons named shove. Whoever asserts, as the dor/Tag; says the editor of the New York Times does, "that H. 11. Lee had the taint di treason on hint," is a wretched slanderer of a devoted patriot of the revolution. For several years before the war broke ; out, he represented his native county of Westmoreland in the Colonial Legisla ture. lie was .elected one of the MIA delegates to the. first Continental Con gress in 1774—was made Chairman ttf , the three leading CommitteeS to .draft addresses to the hang, to the people of Great Britain and to the people of the Colonies, which latter address he pre pared. In the second session of that glorious body, he was Chairman of the Committee to draft a sfarewell address to the people of Great Britain." This address R. 11. Lee wrote, whioh has al ways been considered a masterpiece amongst political papers. It was the extraordinary ability of all these public papers, which called forth the admira tion of Chatham and Macintosh. R. H. Lee was either Chairman or member of the two standing and most important Committees of that body dinmg the whole'wnr, viz: The Committee of For eign Correspondence and that of War rand Navy, beside almost of ev'ery. Com mittee raised from time to time..! He was for the usual term, President of Con gress, which Was equivalent to!the Pres ident of the United States rikaw. It is true he was opposed to the present Con stitution, :is it came from the I Conven tion, as were Jefferson, I Henry and other leading men in Virgin a, and iu every other state, until the amendments were adopted, when he and his bosom friend Henry became reconciled to it, while .lelTerson continued Wattle. In the first Virginia Legislature, latter - the adoption of the present Constitution, R. 11. Lee was elected to the first term of the Senate under the present Federal Governtnent, over Mr, Madidon, by a large majority. He moved several of , the amendments now a part oil the Con stitution. The failure of his healthrom. pelle.l him to resign his seat! and the Senate of 'Virginia presented him the following address by a unaninibus vote, which was concurred in by kheiHouse of Delegates, With eq - nal unanimitly.
