A Sharp and Caustic Epistle am.l Rah( nlll y Synonymovin The Evening P 6.11 "confesses and nlrolds." The `.4.lbany Lobby," repre +tentative of - the Post is a "correspon dent;" and not an editor. But that cor respondent used the Post editorially and otherwise, to promote schemes in which lib bad a pecuniary interest. And the. "navy agent" is only a proprietor of-the Post. Two hours before the navy agent was simultaneonsely removed from office_ and arrested for defrauding thesovern ment, the Post, that model of "temper and manners," said: ``A COMMON SLA'NDEREII,—We pub lish elsewhere a reply of Mr. Henderson, the navy agent at this port, to the charg es Against his official integrity that Thur low Weed raked from the gutters and spread before the public without stop ping to inquire into their truth. It will be seen that Mr. Henderson disposes of these charges most effectually, as well as of others, which some person had suc ceeded in imposing upon Senator Grimes. Weed's reputation of falsehoods was a mere malignant slander, which he clutch ed at desperately to divert attention from his t own career. -'"He not only slanders Mr. Henderson, however, whose business connection with the !Evening Post invited his malice; but like an animal in a rage he flings his dirt equally at a dozen others, Mr. Field, Mr. Opdyke, Mr. Ketchum, and many more who have thwarted him in his corrupt schemes or in some other way become the object of his animosity, are assailed in the moat reckless manner. All of these, who have thought it proper to no tice his abuse, pronounce his asserva tions a tissue of lies, and Mr. Opdyke, it will be seen, whose official as well as per sonal probity, has been called into ques tion, has resolved to give Mr. Weed an opportunity of proving his words in a court of j ustice. If he will also embrace in, the prosecution the journals which have been so quick to spread these ca lumnies he will do a service to the pub lic." While thousands were reading this ill timed editorial in the Post, its "business" associate was before Judge Betts offer ing the same banker who bailed Kohn stamm, who is now at Sing Sing, as his bondsman. The "business connections" of the na vy agent were so far mixed up that an outside government timber contractor had his office in the Post building, a clerk of the Post being also clerk for the tire. her contractor. liecently, when: the-n av yagent had his house in Brooklyn painted, the painter, Mr. Zimmerman, of Broome street, New York, found himself sup.' plied, mysteriously, with whitelead and oil. White lead and oil are purchased largely for the navy. Years ago the Post apprised the public that L navy agency abounded with "unclean citipPiligs" Bin let me return for a moment to the "Albany lobby," for the purpose of show ing that not only the "correspondent" of the Post puts his money in his purse, but that the Evening Post is essentially favore.d. Some three or four years ago Jra . coirespondent lobbied through-a -bill . &finding the oncea of the Post• for ! legal advertising. During the recent seseti of the legislature, that "correspondent" lobbied through a bill which the state re leased its interest in certain real estate, that release inuring to the benefit of an editor of the Evening Post. I pass to Mr. David Dudley Field, who also "confesses and avoids:" Teis is the substance, for I forbear to copy the course slang in which the meaning is conveyed. In all this there is not a word of truth, except the fact that Gen. Fremont has been, and is still, my client; that he, and not I, sought the relation, and that is my compensation for legal services, incessant and most embarrassing and difficult, the value of which I leave him to express. I receiv ed not two hundred thousand dollars, but two thousand shares of stock, the par value of which was `one hundred dollars a share, but which I could have bought at one time for twenty-five dol lars, and could now buy for fifty-five. Mr. Field, like the Evening Post, is distressed with "the course slang" of my letter, I simply stated that in the dis tribution of Mariposa spoils, he received ,Noo,oo in stock. In that statement, says Mr. Field, "thord is not a word of truth, except that 1 received two thousand shares," &c.. ttc. Now, unless my arithmetic is as faulty as my style; "two thousand shares, the par value of which was one hundred dollars a share," makes $200,00. But Mr. Field says that he could once have bought this stock for twt my-five dollars a share, and that it is now selling for fifty-five. [Possibly I may 1 e induced to tell by what kind of horse-jockey stimulation it is kept at fifty-five!] Mr. Field intimates, without Saying it, that his Mariposa stock did not bring him par, "Sharp practice" works wonders. The Stryker's Bay heirs, Messrs. C. S. and M. H. Mott, were clients of Mr. Field, They were, on an occasion, compelled to raise $5.5,- 000 or love their snit and inheritence. Encouraged by their counsel to hope for ' an extension, he informed them at a late day that the money must be raised. Other efforts failing, Mr. Field sold them for more than $lOO,OOO Mariposa stock, at par, taking in payment real estate, sit uated on the corner of Seventh avenue and Broadway. The clients sold Mari posa stock at more. than fifty 'per cent. loss. The counsel has a deed (in the name of his son) for property worth more than $1150,000. If Mariposa be rich in gold there are many things connected with its manage ment still richer in capacity. The way, for instance, Mr. Field got hie " two thousand shares 'of stoek," Mariposa was about to be sacrificed for a debt. The sale was frequently postponed by telegraph to and from California. Finally I.a peremptory day of sale was fixed. The I, i "friends" of General Freutont were in council. The papers are ready for sign ' :lug, when the counsel refused to go un !al his fee was agreed upon and secured. This obstaeleTernoved ; General Fremont Inquired "if anything more was demand led "" Yes, replied the counsel, Simon ;Stevens mast have two hundred thou sand dollars in stock. That done, Gen. ,Fremont was required to place his own stock in Escrow. This, too, 'was done, and General Fremont was only enabled to get possession of his stosk by cutting off another slice for his friends at a Ws 'count of eighty per cent,! liar.
