MON I 'AY MORNING, MAY 23,1864.
The Sanitary Fair.
To persons out of the city of Pittsburgh or
Allegheny, the preparations made for the San
itary Fair are onl> ideal, and of course their
magnitude and importance are not fully realized.
It is not the buildings alone that constitute the
Pair. Without numerous committees and a
vast amount of labor by each, the Fair would
be worth nothing. And the outside community
can have no adequate idea of the labor that
these committees perforin, nor can it be known
till the Fair opens urnl the rare collections of
rich gifts and peculiar curiosities hursts upoa
the view like Lden upon t he first inhabitants oi
the world.
The buildings themselves, h«>we\ er, are uo tri
fling affairs. The dimensions of these are as
follows:
Mechanics' Hall, Itfi’lcet long by iif'leet wide:
Audience Room nr Theatre, 18t> feet long by yd
feet wide; Monitoi Building, 160'feet long by 6,;
feet wide; Floral Kali, IiMJ long by 80 feet
wide; Bazaar, i*o feet lung by 9S feet wide; Din-
ing Hall. lGu feet long by 51 feet wide.
Besides these halt-fi<-\eral rooms of Alleghe
ny City Hall will also bedxcupird. The roof of
each building is made water proof by being cov
ered with paper smeatvd with tar. There are
good and substantial floors in each building and
other ample accommodations for the exhibi
tion aad safe-kpeping of articles brought to the
Fair. Substantial doors with good locks are
already j iaeed at the entrance ol each room,
and a police will guard th.. 1 place each night, so
that valuables brought h.-re will be perfectly
safe. ' •
MkCHanic-’ Hall. —lt is supposed that this
hall will be devoted to the reception ami ex
hibition df’all kinds ot machinery and curios
ities in the mechanical art.-. A part ol the hall
may lie used by Agueultitftists for the display
of particlu.ar kind.- ot pruduce and In tut »iu
ttirae. A great number ol cm iosities tn>m nearly
every shop in town will be on exhibition there,
but the preparations will be kept a secret in
moat instances in drder that the surprise may be
the greater when the Fair opens. It is here
that American genius will be displayed to per
fection. and that the greatest possible compe
tition Will exhibit itself as to win* shall brni
the honor oi having presented the most in
genious piece of workmanship. Those who arc
well acquainted with the spirit and enterprise ot
Pittsburgh mechanics can form stone tolerable
Idea of the display that will, grace this de
partment of the Fair.
