Sanitary Fair. Our readers will recollect that some weeks Binee we urged, in a number of articles the propriety—nay, the urgent necessity of holding a Sanitary Fair in this city. Among other inducements to enlist our citizens in the enterprise, we stated that the Bostonians had realized from then- sanitary fair $140,000; that , 1 l9„ 1 “ < l mnatl fair yielded from $5,000 to $lO,OOO per day; that the Rochester tair realized a large sum ; that the one 1 held in Chicago had yielded $75,000, and that it was estimated that the ' from Sanitary Fairs forthe three months I ending with Reopening of spring would ! probably exeeed $1,000,000. We urged again and again that Pittsburgh should not be behind m so good a w'ork ■ *but our suggestions wenT not seconded in 1 such manner as to carry them into prac- ! tical execution at the time. True Mr. Henderson, of the theatre, and other i public spirited gentlemen authorized us | to say that they would subscribe liberal ly towards getiing up a Sanitary Fair here, still the matter forthe time being was permitted to fall to the ground and we were led to believe that we were not to have any exhibition of the kind But it affords us very great pleasure to an nounce to our readers that the members of the Pittsburgh Sanitary Commission have taken the matter in hand, and will shortly annonnce the time and place for holding a Fair in this city. The Com mission here have heretofore performed good service in behalf of the sick and wounded in our armies, and their i 9 ev ery prospect that the calls upon them will be largely augmented the coming summer. To meet these demands they must have money, and to raise it thev have resolved to-hold a Sanitary Fair May they not confidently expect to re size at lea9t $lOO,OOO 1“ Small ioathsome disease j CUy™ S^artlyed'a?tlTTr! Scarcity of Dwelling Houses.— There is a great scarcity of dwelling houses the present season, particularly of small tenements, and the cost of occu pying, like the cost of everything else has gone up at a rapid rate. There is also a great demand for moderate sized dwellings, for which good rents are of fered. With such a demand as this in dicates, with a certainty of obtaining a large per cent, on investments, is it not strange our capitalists do not erect more dwelling houses, such as are so much needed at the present, and no doubt for all future time ? One reason may be as signed for the unusual scarcity of dwel lings is the fact tiiat so large a number of small tenements have been demolish • ed lately to make room for site various j railroads centering here. .
