Destructive Fire.— \V C learn that a very destructive fire occurred yester day by which ten thousand barrels of oil, in tanks, were destroyed, at the Maple Shade Oil Well, on Oil Creek. The oil had been purchased by some New York dealers in the tanks, and they were making arrangements for its removal when the fire occurred. The loss which is a heavy one, will, there fore, fall entirely upon the parties who had purchased the oil, and the propri etor of the well will only sustain the loss of the tanks. The clerk of the steamer Pringle in forms ine that while that steamer was on a foraging expedition on Johnson’s plan tation, near Teronah landing, five miles above Grand Lake, Mississippi, on the 14th inst., a band of sixty well mounted guerrillas, dressed in Federal uniforms surprised a company of the first Mlssis stppi infantry, colored, whp were stand ing guard about a mile and a half from the main bodj" of the foraging party, capturing and disarming them and before asssstanee could be rendered all were killed or mortally wounded, except two who feigned death—Lieut. Cox and Sergeant Spencer. They were ordered to stripthem, and assert that some of the negroes were pinned to the ground with bayonets, others had their brains knock ed out while others were shot through tlie head while on their knese begging for mercy. 6 The guerrillas escaped without loosing a man. Afterotir dead were burled, the princely mansion, around which a guard was posted and no one allowed to enter previous to the sloughter of our troops, > was fired and the* building with its magnificent furniture consumed. Four thouaaud bushels of corn were taken from a crib containing about fifteen thou sand bushel; when the foraging partv returned to Vicksburg. 1 . Four hundred guerrillas, of which the murderers were part were reported by citizens to be encamped a 8 liort distance back in the country. Memphis cotton market is active at fio for good middling; 54 for strictly do ; 62@fi3 for middling. i W AsntxoTO x, March 2.—A large batch of vety late and interesting rebel papers j has reached the office of "the Chronicle. ; The news is very important, and is in ' brief as loilows: The Richmond papers announce with hardly concealed regret the appointment of General Braxton Bragg to the commander-in-chief of ail the rebel armies, even over the head of tic great General Lee himself The Er awiner. which for some time past lias ma le the hero of Chickamauga a scape goat for the military sins of Davis, as sails Br.ige with fresh bitterness. Ilis appointment is exceedingly unpopular, and Davis himself shares equal odinm. Die rebels boast u complete victory in Florida, Imt, notwithstanding, admit heavy iosses of officers and men. Longstreet s tailing hack appears to i be a mystery to tin rebels themselves. For prudential reasons, llie Enquirer ' docs not mention Jiis probable where - abouls. ’ Great apprehensions arc expressed for ' the safety of the army in Georgia, and 1 for ihe situation in Alabama and Missis. 1 sippi. 1 Capts. Sawyer and Flvnn, lately se lected to be martyrs to retaliation, are about to be surrendered to exchange. | Deserters from the rebel army are now t mllietcd with terrible punishments to save the military power ot the Confeder acy I hey go through a fearful process ol brandishing, which is described in the rebel papers, and many of them have been pub)irh- hung in the smallertowns. Tlie Enquirer again warns the farmers that agricultural products must he sold for still lower prices. The salaries of government employees have been raised one hundred per cent., to enable them to procure tlie necessaries ofiife. Great ado is made over the copperhead disaf fection in the north. Every attack upon Prcsideni Linculn’s administration is quoted with exaggerated comment. Senator Pomeroy's rircular is promi nently copied by the Richmond press, and endorsed with evident satisfaction. COMMERCIAL & FINANCIAL. PITTSBURGH PHODUCE MARKET.
