furnace is that in the former the fuel
and iron are separate, and there is a nat

latter the fuel and iron are together, and
the draft is made by blast.

ing this heavy mould, and in taking the
gun front the

capacity of forty tons. They are worked
by the steam engine, which not only
hoists and lowers the load, but likewise
causes the cranes to revolve. The
crimes were designed and built at the
Fort Pitt Foundry by Mr. Nicholas K.
Wade, its forther engineer.

20-inch gun. It is sixty feet long, eight
feet wide over the shears, and is driven
by two engines, fi-inch cylinder, 12 inch

The Temperature of the Water.
The temperature of the stream of Wa
ter, which at one minute after twelve
commenced running into the core, stood
;it the commencement at thirty-six de
grees; at the moment the casting teas
over it stood at forty-two ; four
minutes after the casting was over it was
at fifty-two degrees; eight minutes after
the casting was (,‘ cr at seventy-live and
a half degrees; fourteen minutes after the
casting, at eighty-one and a half degrees;
twenty minutes after the casting, at
eighty-nine and a quarter degrees; twen
tv-five minutes after the casting, at nine
tV-one degrees; and thirty minutes after
the casting, at ninety-one and three-quar
ter degrees.

The casting was a perfect success. No
result could possibly had been more
satisfactory. Nothing went wrong.

ped almost immediately after. When the
casting was completed a blacking, con
sisting of ground coal; was strewn over
the top to prevent chilling. During the
operation the gas escaped freely front the
vent holes in the flasks which is perfora
ted in a thousand places with these neves
sary accommodations, half an inch in
diameter. Three furnaces only were
employerl. A fourth furnace was in re
serve; in f :Let' of any accident, lint the
necessity for its nqc was wholly prod
ed. Only two or three tons were left
over, after the casting was completed,
evincing a calculation of unusual nicety.
The fourth furnace in reserve tool
supply of ten tons, and a fifth twelve
tons, which in any exigency might have
been drawn upon. After the casting was
over, the mould, not being completely
filled, owing to the
,ttradual setttiing of
the liquid noise, tilippliCil
tresit liquid iron, (r in other• words, was
filled up with "shanks." All the fuel
employed was the Pittsburgh bituminous
coal.

adopted, the hardest and best iron is that
nearest the surt in •e of the bore. The
fact of the gun being cast hollow, secures
this.
The 80-tuch Tested
The iron ofrwhich the gun is east .was
thoroughly tested hy Major Rodman, in
the same manner 115 that of the first 'l5.
inch. The sample by which the fzun is
to he proved is to is taken from the sink
ing -head, or the rough end cut off from
the muzzle.
The Remelting
The metal has been once remelted be
fore being charged info furnaces for the
gun. The iron from which it is con
structed is all of one grade.
The 20-hich In Advance of the World
It is acknowledged by our numerous
foreign inventor , that the United State::
arc certainly, in artillery, in advancy of
the world. The '2O n c h gun is a living
example of it. But it is Dot alone the
20-inch which we are called upon to ad
mire. Attention is attracted to the Fort
Pitt Foundry, where the great gun of
the age was manufactured. The spot
where such a gun is made is a spot which
at once becomes a matter of history. An
inspection of the Fort Pitt Foundry is a
matter of almost as much importance as
an inspection of the guns there mann

The Fort Pitt Foundry
is, in the first place, in Pittsburgh, fronts
upon the river, anti is bounded on its
other three shies by 01lam, Etna and
Walnut strtets. The foundry proper is
alaiut 300 feet long by 100 wide, and
contains six furnaces, whose capacity is
for 1.3 r) tons of iron at a heat. It like
ise contains sixteen pits, in which the
guns are cast, and four drying ovens, in
which the guns are dried after being
moulded. it is furnished with six cranes,
two of which are capable of lifting fifty
and four of lilting from fifteen to
twenty tons.

knowledge our supremacy. No gun that
has ever been cast in the wide world
can at all compare with the 20-inch gun

The building which these comprise is
a large fire proof structure. One of its
features is a testing-machine, which tests
the strength of specimens'' of all guns cast
at 'he foundry. This invention is built
upon the latest improved pattern of Rod
man, which is now at the 'Watertown
arsenal, It has a capacity of one hun
dred thousand pounds.
Numbering of the Guns.
Every gun manufactured at the Fort
Pitt Foundry is numbered. A complete
tec , ird of the iron or which it is made is
kept; a specimen being taken from each,
and the specific gravity and tensile

A very simple and efficient ball-clean
er attracts the scrutiny of visitors. We

Another efficacious and by no means
complex.]n vention, is a machine for fin
ishing the rim-Lases of gum:i. 31 r. Edward
Kaylor, who is the inventor, and also the
foreman of the boring-mill, seems to have
successfully solved the problem which
has hitherto baffled inventors.
