At t lievery latest accounts, the greatr:2o inch IZodman gun was doing well. From the beginning to the end it has progres sed so fit rurality that it has left nu room fir the wishes or despondencies of its friends and well-wishers. When we have a low more guns like this, perhaps foreign natiow and not foreign _in dividuals only, will be anxious to ac knowledge our supremacy. No gun that has ever been cast in the wide world can at all compare with the 20-inch gun cast du Thursday at the Fort Pitt Foun dry. No gun that will be made for some thus to come will elicit the world-wide. interest which attaches to this. Such a gun is literally a never-to-be-forgotten Gut in military history. It may be /ook ed upon as the infinitely careful result of p ars of toil and endeavor. The final it suit vi hied! is so happily achieved is honorably alike to the inventor, the c onstructor, and the Government which gave patronage to both. The 20-Inch at Home. •iul Lea tatim The great 20-inch will never feel at home until it is in active service. Where\ er and whenever that service may he ordered, it is positively certain that an amount of execution will be tf fectvd such as has never before been wrought by one single instrument through all the long results of time. Offices of the Fort Pitt Foundry. The building which these comprise is a large fire proof structure. One of its features is a testing-machine, which tests the strength of specimens'' of all guns cast at 'he foundry. This invention is built upon the latest improved pattern of Rod man, which is now at the 'Watertown arsenal, It has a capacity of one hun dred thousand pounds. Numbering of the Guns. Every gun manufactured at the Fort Pitt Foundry is numbered. A complete tec , ird of the iron or which it is made is kept; a specimen being taken from each, and the specific gravity and tensile strength tested. Record: , of their,c; are pro,or hno:t all the heavy work, not only brit also of moving the guns over tramways, is effected by steam. A very simple and efficient ball-clean er attracts the scrutiny of visitors. We understand that the inventor is Mr. Joseph Kaye, who has for a long time acted as foreman of the foundry, aml 's the introducer of several improvement,.
