A new city, above or below Philadelphia, will require to he built up eventually for this business. Im mense tanks, instead of coal bunks, will be fitted up on each steamer, and these will not occupy probably half the present space. On merchant steamers this will be of immense importance, and it must event ually tend to give both our navy and mer chant steamers great advantage over those of other nations. In case of aloreign war this would be particularly felt. Pittsburgh and the whole of the upper Ohio river would supply enormous quan tities of this fuel for the river steamers, and send down as much more to New Ur leans. The western parts of Penasylva nia will no donbtbe built up more rapidly than can well be conceived, by so lucra tive a product, manufacture and trade. The railroad enterprise will receive a ' stimulus, and from this city to Erie wo I ' become as much pressed with business as the Reading ltailto.td has thus far been. There First Ward Democratic Ticket. The Democras of the Fir _t Ward have placed in nomination the following ticket for ward officers to be voted for to-day. Select Council, Wm. M'Ginn ; Constable, John Sarber. We are glad to see that the Democracy of the First Ward has put forth a full tick. arid one of such unexceptionable worth. It is due to the party itself, as well as the gentlemen put in nomination, that every Democrat in the ward should go to the polls. And let them look well to it that the shameless swindling and unblush ing corruption which was practiced upon them at the last election be not attempted to day. Vote the ticket, and nothing but the ticket, and let the vote cast by you to day prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that the charges of corruption made against the dominant party in the First Ward, at the late fall election, were true to the very letter. BUNCO'S GRAND ITALIAN PANORAMA. I.lte and Heroic Career of Garibaldi. It was our good fortune to witness the ex• hibition of Bianco's Grand Italian Pano rama of the Life and Heroic career of Garibaldi, the Washington of Italy, last evening, at Lafayette Hall. It illustrates with astonishing effect the patriotic Gari baldi's battles by sea and land, giving full details of his daring enterprise, escapes, conquests and reverses, until at last, side by Fide with Victor Emanuel, he enters the orond city of Naples amid the wildest rejoicings of the liberated Neapolitans. Were we to particulani.e any one scene, it would be that in which is represented the death of the devoted wife of Garibaldi— the lovely Annita—who, in the language of one of her intimate friends, was the " noblest woman the world ever saw." But language would fail to do justice to the Panorama. It must be seen to be ful. ly appreciated. The scenery is accompa• nied by an eloquent lecture by Mr. A. Burford, which adds greatly to the interest of the spectator. It will remain but a short time, and we would advice all to go and see it. Shaw and Joseph l'hillips were killed, and Charles Moon, Alexander Henderson, John Hackett and Charles Semmes were wounded. Com mander Balch of the Pawnee says: At six twenty on the morning of the 25th December, the enemy opened on the Mar blehead, which was replied to vigorously. At 6:25, the Pawnee opened fire on the enemy's batteries from 'lOO pound rifle gun. At 7 o'clock the C. P. Williams, on hearing firing, shipped her cable, and came down Folly River under sail and opened lire handsomely. The rapid firing from the three vessels soon caused the enemy to retreat, and at 7:.:0 the enemy had retreated in diaorder, leaving two of hie guns in the batteries. The Pawnee then proceeded off Legareville. Soon after this, General Gordon, commanding the troops ou the south end of Folly Is land, came up. WASH INGTON, January 4.—The rumors of the enemy's designs and operations in the Shenandoah Valley are exaggerated. Fitz Lee's cavalry of perhaps 1000 men, supported by Early's three meagre bri gades with Imboden and other local lead ers with small detachments numbering all told WOO to 7000 men are near Wood stock and Mount .lackson with an occas ional dash as far north as Winchester. The latest indications point to the Moor field Valley, it not west of the mountains, as their scene of operations. Certainly they have not appeared as yet in sight of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, the trains of which are all running regularly and successfully, with large quantities of freight and many passengers. The best evidence of r flicial confidence in the se airily of the route is the sending of im portant detachments over it.. TLIE Chicago Tribune, the organ of the radicals in the Northwest, publishes the following slanderous and false attack up ou our Irish population : The negroee, without bounty and with half the pay of the white soldiers, have put more men into the field than the Irish, twice or thrice over. When the war is over and the Union is saved, the honor and glory of preserving free institutions and maintaining the great republic intact will be parceled out among the different classes of men. The native arms will get a share large eneu gh to satisfy their ut most desire; the Germans will come in for a slice, so of the Scandinavians and the Scotchmen; and the poor and depised negroes will have a large niche set apart in the shining temple to hold their part of the glory. But smallest of all, in pro portion to their numbers, will be due to the Irish. There have been more Irish enlisted in our armies in proportion to their numbers in this country than any other nationality—American not excepted. This was not because they are more patriotic than the Germans and other foreigners, but because of their poverty and native love of fighting. There are no braver troops in our armies. On the other hand, there are fewer negro volunteers than any other race. Nine tenths of the colored men in the ranks are compulsory soldiers. The Tribune is as wrong and false as it can be in this matter.
