THE bajmcae aboutiomsts The- radical an d deelrnclivee of the | very extreme of Abolitionism, are, it ap Peare, aomethmg too rapid in their deveb pmectß, to suit th e policy of the Aboli on leaders. Wskmll Phillips the other day ,n New York dissented from Borne positions taken by President L. ncols m hia late message, and the Times very pointedly took issue with that fierce de c aimer. The Commercial of this city, too, in its issne yesterday adopts the tone of the Times and remarks as follows: ‘‘Bat slavery is only an incidental ques tion, not, on our part, the cause of the war. Tbe question of Abolition has nothing whatever to do with the question of loyalty A pro slavery man may be loyal, while many anti slavery men are certainly and conspicuously disloyal. That man is loyal who is for sustaining the Government, crashing the rebellion and preserving the Union, without re gard to slavery. If slavery stands in the way of this result, he is Ur destroying it; if it gets out of the way ho will not aban don the Union for the sake of destroying slavery. This is the only line of diatiuc tion that can be drawn," There is more good sense and truth in this brief paragraph than we have seen in any Abolition paper for a month. No one who favors the restoration of the _mon will object to slavery being crashed if necessary to attain it; our objections are confined to the Administration and the Commercial's party making the destrne tton of slavery the principal, not the inci dent of the war. Mark the President’s last message containing tests for the re .admission of the states in rebellion; he ‘■firms hia right to exercise foil control over the htates embraced within the area of the rebellion, and to prescribe the terms and conditions on which their Govern ments may resnme their legitimate ops rations. He designates the class which ahall be permitted to exercise the ngbts of citizenship, pledges them by an oath to a certain course of policy with reference to heir domestic institutions, graciously in timates that n they adopt certain meas ures, purely of a domestic character, the, will not be objected to by the Executive, and leaves it a matter of legitimate infer ence that if th ls selected and qualified bod, of citizens ehall pass any laws which' hough constitutional, are unacceptable to the National Executive, they will be re vised or annulled. In short, the President, instead of re gar ding the States as integral parte of the mon, which no frand or force, short ot a succesafnl revolution, could remove instead of regarding the Governments , those States as for the time being sn , pended and paralyzed i„ , heir fanctior ' t by lawless force instead of regarding, h insurrectionary acts and laws as utterly void because in contravention of tbo sn premelaw of the land-instead of mis, he President assnmea as the foundation of h,s argument and the basis of his policy hat the Union is actually dissolved-tha. he. nsurreotionary States are no part o< ,l , 7to the ac <s and luediuc.-fl „l egislatures, antT 'carrying'- p-nr-lrts doctrines to their legitimate issue, he pro p.B,-s to consider the territory acqaired b, oar armies ,n the same light that be would regard a foreign territorial acquisition by conqneat, and to provide the form of Gov ernment of thssnbjugated States : and if they are ever tube incorporated in the Union to arrange the terms and conditions of their admission. If this view i s cor _ | reel ,|; would seem a mistake to caii the Confedera;es rebels, for they would then appear to be no less than a separate peo ple-made so by a valid and effectual or dinance of secession-striving to maintain tbeir independence and nationality _ FAITH IJtf THE FCTtfiE.
