A Startling Fact—A Panther iwaftp Suburbs of the <7ity. w f From tkeDabuutte' JowiO HoraM.j Dar.i.g the whole of the past seminar the residents of Julieo township, just out side of the city limits, in the vicinity of the residence of W. G. Stewart, esq,, have been much troubled by depredations com mitted upon their poultry and pigs, and jn one or two cases it is said that calves add lambs have been missing. All this wks for a tong time unaccountable, and bonekt people puzzled their brains hot a little to furnish a reasonable explanation. It soon became evident, however, that tbe trel- Basser was a wild fenimei of home king but what_ contd divinetL several different occasions, so that no doubt longer exists that a £ahther of the largest and fiercest kind la"now prowling around the very suburbs of theoity. In August last it was first seen. Ur. Hiram Cobb, living about three and a half miles from the city, near Mr. Stewart’s, the very edge' of the large tract of timoer in that part oi the township, was one morning aroused about daylight by a disturbance among his poultry, and upon getting up found his dog, a large and pow erful bull terrier just ooming out of the busheß and literally torn to pieces in a fight with some animal so that he died shortly afterwards. The very next day Mrs. Cobb was oalled oat by another raid upon her poultry, and going to tbe rear of the house she was startled by the appear ance of au animal emerging from the bushes, and eyeing her wistfully for a mo ment or two, when it Bounded out of sight. It was but a short tune before she heard a noise behind her, and turning to ascertain the cause, was Btill more startled to see the Bame animal appoaching her stealthily from behind. She was ot course frighten ed, but not so much so as she would have been had she been acquainted with its real character. On turning around and facing it the animal stopped for a moment, and then made off and wap seen no more. ■ From her description there is no doubt it was a panther. It was not seen again until some time during October, though its depredations were continued with unremitting industry. One night about a month ago Mr. Du rand, who lives in -.he same neighborhood, was returning home through tbe woods, when in a short turn oi the path,.he was I suddenly met by two large animals, which appeared quite as much surprised by the unexpected encounter as he was, for they took to tbe woods, one upon one side and the other upon the other, and quickly j passed out of sight and hearing. It ap pears from this that there are two of them, though no more than one has been seen at any other time. Last Sunday, however, one of them made himself khown in the visible person in such a manner that there can no longer be any doubt of who, where, and what he is, what he looks like, and that he has ‘-materials of war” on hand at any lime when any one wants a fight. Sunday morning a son of Mr. Durand, a young man, was following a wood road through the timber, when the panther ali at once entered the road a short distance before him and stopped. Darand stopped too. as one very naturally would under the oireumstanees. The panther stopped full in the path, with flashing eyes, growling terrifically, and commenced gnawing the earth, throwing the dirt twenty feet in tbe air. It gave an unearthly Bcreech and made off an effort in which it was ably seconded by Durand. Mr. Stewart, in company with the young man, afterwards examined the place and became convinced that it was a panther and that of the largest size. By the aid of a small bird dog they tracked him a short distance, and found s ill another place where he had also p wed the earth. Durand describes it as a ‘urge, powerfully built and fierce looking animal, fall six feet in icngth. It is evidently one of the largest of iu kind. Very naturally the matter has created no little excitement in the neighbo hood, and last nigm a meeting was to be held to make arrangements for a grand hunt for it. It has been proposed to have it eome off to morrow, and it probably will. The panther has his lair somewhere in the woods thereabouts, and one man thinks he already knows where it is. Whenever the hunt comes off it will afford some of the rarest sport that has been enjoyed here abouts lor years, and will doubtless be participated in by a number from the city who have a taste for that sort ot thing Some four years ago a large panther whi killed in the same vicinity, audit™* no longer ago, than Sunday week that & Terr large wild cat waa killed iu tke same timber,* PITTSIiL-RGH, POPLINS, W Market st. Before the battle, and while the national hosts were awaiting the assault of the traitor foe, Jenny Wade was busily engaged in baking bread for the national troops. She occupied a house in range of the gunwcrf - both armtea, and the rebels had sternly ordered .Jter „to . leave the premises, but this she as sternly refused to do. While she was busily engaged in her patriotic work, a minie. bull, pierced her-pure heart, and she fell a hov sacri fice in her co entry’s qansjs. jOmoßt at the same time a rebel officer.of hig&'rank fell near where Jenny Wadehaapqiubed. Did John Barns was the only man of Gettysburg who participated in the straggle tb-save the North from invasion, while innocent Jenny Wade was the only sacrifice whioh the people of that locality had to offer on the shrine of their country. Let a monu ment be erected on the ground which covers her, before which the pilgrims to the holy tombs of the heroes, of Gettys burg can bow aud bless the mernbfy of Jenny Wade. If the people of Gettysburg are not able alone to raise the fens, to pay for a suitable monument for Jenny Wade, let them send a committee to Har risburg, and our little boys and girls will assist in soliciting subscriptions fib? ibi« holy purpose.
