DAILY POST. P ploy Lettftr from Oeu«ral Leslie Combs to tbc OernißQ Abolit loui»t». OABt. SCHyRZ Fraxkfort. Ky , Nov. 19, 18G3 To the Editors of th* Lou tvilU Journal : I have read a note, published in'jour paper n. few days Bince over the signature of Carl Schurz, commencing, as it seema to me, in very unbecoming terms for a man who, from his position in the army, is presumed to be allowed, sometimes, to associate with gentlemen—upon a remark made by mein a letter to a friend in New York, which found its way into the public prints, as to his conduct and that of his command at the battle of Chanceliorville, as then presented to the nation by an eye witness, and, so far as I have seen, not subsequently contradicted by any reliable authority. After Borne considerable blaster, he, very considerately, informs me that he is **a first-rate pistol shot,’ ’ and might proba bly kill me in a duel;” he therefore po litely invites me to come to his headquar ters, and lt share kis bed with &o. Now, I am myself a very poor pistol shot, never having bred a pistol a dozen times in my life, nor praoticed with any other weapon in order to become a dan gerous duelist. Indeed, for more than fifty years I have had but little use of either arm, as can be ascertained by ref erence to the.records of the War Depart ment in Washington. Bat upon full re flection, first, considering his avowed op’Dions as to human color, and. secondly, being very particular in selecting my bdd-fellows, I rather incline to run the risk of & pistol shot, even from his skill ful hand, fn preference to sleeping one night with him in hia own bed, noi know iog who might have teen my immediate predecessor. Finally, I respectfully suggest that while Carl Schurz may obtaiu some un enviable notoriety, by passing over thou sands of his coteraporariea, and making an onslaught upon an old soldier, whose history can not be unwritten by rebels or abolition fanatics, he has added nothing to his fame with those who know the difference between a brave man and a bully. Respectfully, yours, <kc.. How Sal Disgraced the Family- Marrying an Editor. A traveler in the State of Illinois some yeare ago came to a lone log but on the prairie near Cairo, and (here halted. He. went into the house. It was a wretched affair —an empty packing-box for a table, while two or three chairs and disagreeable stools graced the reception-room, the walls of which were further ornamented with a display of old rusty tin ware, and a broken shelf article or two. The old woman was wringing her hands and cry ing in the corner, and the old man, with his hand pressed upon his forehead, tears in his eyes and pipe in his mouth, sar. on a stool, looking wretchedly sorrowful. Not a word greeted the interloper. “Well,” aai,d he, “you seem to be in awful troubles What’s up?’ 1 u Ah, we are almost crazy, stranger, and we ain’t got patience to Bee folks now.” “That’s all right,” said the stranger not much taken back by the impolite rebuff ; “but can I be of any service to you in all this trouble?” “Well, we've lost our gal; our Sal’s gone off and lefc us,” said the old man in tones of deep despair. “Ah! do you know what induced her to leave you ?’ ’ “Well, we caa't say. stranger, as how she ia bo far lost as to be induced, bat then she's gone and disgracjcLna," re mWkefl the afflicted father. ,: Yes, straDger, and—not as I should say it as her mother—bat thar war’nt a pootier gal in the West than Sal; she’s fone and broaght misery upon her own ead now,;', followed theeickened mother. ‘■Who has she gone off with,” inquired the visitor. •‘Well, there's the ’trouble. The gal coaid have done well, and might have married Joe Gordon, a capital shoe maker.‘•who, although'he has ont dhe eye, plays the flute ia a lively manner, and makes a good livin. Then, look, what a life she has deserted ; she wab surrounded by all the luxury in the country,” said the father. ‘‘Yeß, who knows what poor Sal will have to eat, drink and wear now?” groaned the mother. “And who is the feliow that has taken aiis Jeffery "Why, ' ebb’s gone off and got married to a critter called an Editor, as lives in the village, and the Lord only knows how he is to earn a living!” A?
