General: I have the h6nor to submit herewith a report of theeoperations of this army during the mouth of July, including details of the battle of Gettysburg which have been delayed by failure to receive the reports of the several Corps and Di vision Commanders who were severely wounded in battle. On the 28th of June I received orders from the President plac ing me iu command of the Army of the Potomac. The situation of affairs was briefly as follows : The tonfederate army, which was com manded by General R. E. Lee, was esti mated at over one hundred 'thousand strong. All that army had crossed the PO ac river and advanced up the Cum berlan e Reliable intelligene placed his advance thus : Ewell's corns on the `tusquehaunah, Harrisburg and Columbia. Longstreet's corp at Charn bersburg, and Has corps between that place and Cashtown. The 28th of Juan was spent in ascer— taining the position and strepgth of the different corps of the army, but pribct pally in bringing up -the cavalry which had been covering the rear of the army so its passage over the Patonlac, and to which a large increase had just been made from the forces previously attached to the defence?, of Washington. Orders were given on this day to Major General French, commanding at Harper's Ferry, to move with seven thousand men to occupy Frederick and the lice of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. and with the balance of his force, estimated at four thousand, to remove and escort public, property to Washington. Ou the 29th the army was put in motion, and on the evening of that day it was .o position, and the lest at Ernmettsburg. the right at New Windsor. Buford's Di vision of Cavalry was on the left tisek, ,vith his 'advance at Gettysburg. Ktlpatrick's division was in the front et. Hanover, where he encountered this day Gen. Stuart's Confederate cavalry, which had crossed the Potomac at Seneca creek. and passing our right flank, was making its way toward ('artiste, having escaped Gregg's Division, which was delayed in taking position on the right flank. by the occupation of the roads by a column oi infantry. On the 30th the right flank at which place three corps, Ist, 11th and 3d, were collected under the orders of Major General Reynolds. General Buford having reported from Gettysburg the ap• pearance of the enemy on the Cashtown road in some force, General Reynolds was oirected to occupy Gettysburg. On reaching that place on the let day of July, General Reynolds found Buford's cavalry warmly engaged with the enemy, who had debouched his infantry through the mountains on Cashtown, but was bring held in check in the roost gallant manner by Buford's cavalry. Major Gen. Rey• nolds immediately moved round the town of Geityshing, and advanced on the Cash town road. acd without a moment's heel tation deployed his advanced division and attacked the enemy, at the same time send ing orders for the 11th Curio, General Howard, to advance es prompV as pos Soon after making his dispositions for attack, Major General Reynolds fell mor— tally wounded, the command of the let Corps devolving on Major General Dou bleday, and the command of the field on Major General Howard, who arrived about this time (11.80 a m ) with the 11th Corp;. then commanded by Majer General Schurz Major General Howard pushed forward two di:isions of the llth C, rps to support the Ist Corps, now warmly en gaged with the enemy, on the ridge to the north of the town, and posted his 3d Di• vision, with three batteries of artillery, on the Cemetery Ridge, on the south side of the town. Cp to this time the battle had been with the forces of the enemy debouching from the mountains on the Cashtown road, known to be Hill's Corps. In the early part of the action the success was on the enemy's side. Wadsworth'a Division of the Ist Corps having driven the enemy back scene distance, captured numerous prisoners: among them General Archer. of the Confederate army. fhe arrival of reinforcements to the enemy on the Cashtown Road, and are jurctton of Ewell'sCorpscoming in on th,! York and Harrisburg Roads. which oc• burred between 1 and 2 o'clock p. eni, bled the enemy to bring vastly supe rior forces against both the Ist and Ilth Corps, outflanking our lime of battle and pressing it so severely that about 4 o'clock p. in., Major General Howard deemed it prudent to withdraw these two corps to the Cemetery ridge, on the sou side of the town, win eh operation was successfully accomplished, not, however, without con sidc , rable loss in prisoners, arising from . the confu±iou incident to both corps pas sing through the town and the men getting confused in the streets. About the tune of the withdrawal, Major General Han cock arrived, whom I had despatched to represent me on the field, on hearing of the death of Gen. Reynolds. In conjunction with Major General Howard, General Hancock proceeded to post the troops on Cemetery Ridge and to repel an attack that the enemy made on our flank. This attack was not, however, very vigorous, the enemy seeing the strength of the position occupied, seemed to be satisfied with the success he nad ac complished, desisting from any further at tact: This day. About 7 o'clock y. m. Major Gene e Slmturn and Sickels, with the 12th Cgs and part of the Bd, reached the grpund, and took post on the right and left of the troops previously posted. Being satisfied, from reports received from the field, that it was the intention of the enemy to sup port, with his whole army, the attack ' already made, and reports', from Major Generale Hancock and Howard on the character of the position being favorable, I d •termined to give battle' at this point, and early in the evening first &tied orders to all corps to concentrate at Gettysburg, directing all trains to be sent to the rea; at Weettninister, at 11 p. m., first. I broke up my headquarters, which.till. then had been at Taneytown, and proceed ed to the field, arriving here at 1 a. m. of the 2d. So soon as it was light I pro ceeded to inspect the position occupied, and to make arrangements for posting several corps as they should reach the ground. ESTABLISHED 1842. By 7a. , ie 2d and sth Corps, with theh rest oft td, had reached theground, and were posted as follows: The Ilth Corps retained its position on Cemetery Ridge, just opposite to the town; the Ist oil,s was posted on the right; the 11th 6n en elevated knoll connectin g with the ridge, and extending to the south and east, on which the 12th Corps was placed; the right of the 12th Corps resting on a small stream at a point where it crossed the Bal timore pike, and which formed on the righ , flank of the 12th something of an obstacle. $8 00 - ._... 2 16 Cemetery Ridge extended in a westerly and southerly direction, gradually dimin ishing in elevation till it came to a very prominent ridge called `'Round Top, running east and meat The 2d and 3d Corps were directed to occupy the con tinuation of Cemetery Ridge on the left of the Ilth Corps and 6th Corps, pending their arrival the 6th Corps was held in re serve. While these dispositions were be. ing made the enemy was massing his troops on an exterior ridge, distant from the line occupied by us from a mile to a mile and a half. At 2 p. m. the G.h Corps arrived? after a march of thirty two miles, which was ac , :omplished from 9 p. to. of the day previous. On its arrival being reported I immediately directed the sth Corps to move over to our extreme left and the 6th to occupy its place as a reserve to the right. About 3 p: in. I rode out to the extreme left to await the arrival of the Gth Corps and poet it, when I found that Major Gen eral Sickles, commanding the 3d Corps, net fully apprehending my instructions in regertito the position to be occupied, had advanced, or rather was in the act of ad vancing his corps some half mile or three quarters of a mile in the front of the line of the :2d Corps, on a prolongation on which it was designed his corps should if Ft. Having found Major General' Sickles, I was explainnig to him that he was too far in tle advance, and discussing with him theloroprirty of withdrttwing, when the enemy opened upon him with several bat teries in his front and flank, and imme diately brought forward columns of infan try, and made a vigorous assault. The 3d Corps sustained the shock most heroically. Troops from the 23 Corps - were immedi ately sent by Major tfeneral Hancock to cover the right flank of the 3d Corps, and soon after the assault commennd. 41 The 3th Corps most fortunately arrived Eikr took a position on 'he left of the 3d, Major General Sykes cAmanding, imme clia, ely sending a force to occtii4 "hound For „ridge, where a most furious contest was rotamed, the enemy making des perate successful (irons to secure it. Votwiths nding the stubborn resistance a tt t:4 - the 3d Corps under Major General hiruey (Major General Sickles haling been wounded early in the action) supe— riority in numbers of corps of the enemy enabling him to outflank its advanced po sition, General Birney was counseled to fall back and reform behind the line orig inally desired to be held. In the rneaniime, persejlaingtha—strAa.L. the lin Ccir.ps to width I had assigned Major General Newton, particularly Lockwood's Maryland brigade, together with detachments from the 2d Corps, were all brought up at different periods, and succeeded, together with a gallant resi?„,.ce oft4e sth Corps, in checking, and' '+‘ llylfptilsing te assaut of th enem ''''. l . e trretired in co h nfasion l and dis e - order eti,.. stiuset, and ceased any fur ther effor "'lip our extreme left. An assault was, however, made about eight p m., en the 11th Corps, from the left .i the town, which was repelled with tfie assistance of troops from the 2d cud Ist Corps. Paring the heavy assault upon our extreme left, portions of the 12th Corps were sent as reinforcements. During their absence, the line on the extreme :fight was held by a very much reduced force. This was taken advantage of by the enemy, who, during the absence of Geary'e division of the 12th Corps, advanced and occupied part of the line. o n the morning of the 3d General Geary, having returned during the night, attacked at early dawn the enemy, and succeeded in driving him back and OCCEl pyi.:g his former position. A spirited contest was maintained all the morning along thie part of the line. General Geary, reinforced by Wheaton's brigade of the sth Corps, maintained his position and inflieted very severe 10E1E103 on the enemy. With this exception, our iirais remained undisturbed until Ip. m on the 3d, when the enemy opened from over 125 guns, playing upon our centre and left. The cannodade continued fc.r over two hours, ,vhen our guns falling to make any reply, the enemy ceased firing, and soon his 'names of infantry became visible, forming for an assault on our left and centre. An assault was made with great firm ness, directed principally against the point occupied by the 2d Corps, and was repell d with equal ..tirmness by the troops of that corps, Frapported by Doubleday's division and 'tannard's brigade of the Ist Corps. 4 During this assault, both Major nerai Hancock, commanding the left centre, and Brigadier General Gibson, commanding the 2,1 Corps, was severely wounded. i hid termir.ated the battle, the enemy retiring to his lint.s, leaving the field strewed with his dead and wounded, and numerous prisoners in our hands. Bu ford's division of cavalry, after its ardu ous service at Gettysburg on the first, wag on the second, sent to Westminster to re• fir and guard our trains. Kilpatrick's di vision, that on the 29th, 301 h and Ist had been successfully engaging the enemy's cavalry, was, on the ad, sent on our ex treme left; on the Emmettsbarg road, Nyhere good service was rendered in as— Shafting the enemy's line and occupying Ida tittention. At the same time General Gregg was ,-:,gaged with the enemy on our extreme net!, having passed across the Baltimore pi' and and 13unaughtown roads, and boldly flanked the enemy's left and rear. On the morning of the 4th the reconnoissance developed that the enemy had drawn buck his left flank, but maintained kip po sition,in front of our left, apparently assuming a new line parallel to the moan- Oa ihe morning of the 6th it was 'snar- La l i d that the enemy was in full retreat by e fairfied and Cashtown roads. The 6th orps was immediately sent in par siiit to the Fairfield road, and , the cavalry On the Caahtown road, and by Emmetts .burg and Monterey passes. The 6th and 6th of July were employed in succoring the wounded and burying the dead. Majorriweral Sedgy/rick, commanding the 6th Mrps, 'having pushed on in pursuit of the enemy as far as Fairfield Pass in the modhtains, and reporting that pass as very strong, and one. in which a small force of the enemy could hold in dheck and delay a considerable time any pursuing force, I determined to follow the enemy by a flank movement, and an coydingly, leaving Mclntosh's brigade of ',cavalry and Neill'e brigade of infantry to continue• harassing the enemy, I put,the land. army in motion for Middletown V.v.-
