The prominence just given to the King of Dahomey and his court by the diecns sion which has taken place in one of the cliguified seances of the British Associa• Lion, and the ceetroversy which is going on as to his mental and moral ideasycra sies, bid fair to make the name of that potentate a household word. He has the reputation of being the chief supporter of the slave trade in the interior of Africa; he is the bete noire of missionaries ; and we heard a year or ewe age such an ace eonut or his "c.eitecad, and of the heca tombs of human V.,-11039 that are consumed in the celebratieu of them. that LiSed Rus s, ll was recommended to put him down at mice a_ a public nuisance. On such oc c talons it is always advisable to wait a lit tle. had as it is to be oaliged to''take the confes, ion, philanthropy, when its blood is up, 1. apt to be as iudiscriminete in ie3 vengeance as a King of Dahomey himself; and missionaries are occasionally given to premature alarms• wild exagger• atione, and thevagaries of old• womanhood in general. We have lately had a pic-ure of the terrible potentate. drawn from the life by one wbo,has bad every opportunity of beeieg him es be is. who writes with a sailor's brevity een exactness, and who h .s presseted Perilaint n t with one of the moll readable papers that have adorned teat species of leerature fur years. It it as comederably more favorable than the sketch which bee been subsequently given. I) the world by M. Jules Gerard, it is more detailed and circumstantial, it ap pears to be founded on fuller opportatii ties of observation than those enjoyed by the brlebrated lien-huater, and it hue just been corfirmed by the independent and personal testimony of Mr. Craft. at New- Castle. The narrative of cur gallant countryman may perhays aesise us in cur re,' I,g t some extent -he very exaggera ted and unpleasaut impression of the royal character which M. Gererd's account of his Dahomey expt r:ences Is calculated tc produce. In November, 1862, C •enmodore, Wil li:tor was cruising on the it est African sta tion in E. M. S. Rattesnake, and learned from the Wesleyan missionary at Wydah that the King of Dahomey way most anxious to see "somebody of consid, ra tion from England ; a 'real Englishman,' with whom he might converse on the affairs of his country." Accordingly. he consulted the Yavogah, or Govenor of EPS,' When he wayalcr "let him know whether the KinetiNd see him." Efe returned 'at the ap 'tnted time. and haling been meanwhd represented to his Majesty axe ''good a 'd proper person." with a sort of murnatian (which seems, by the way, to have been at, extemporized addition on the part of the Yavogah) that he came out as a messenger of the Queen, he received the King's invitation to his capital in due form. There were twe or three things, however, to be seriously considered-. Our late attacks on Porto Nova, which belongs to the King's brother, was said to have enraged his Majesty so much that he had expressed a strong desire to lay hands upon an English officer, for certain personal and urpleas ant purple-es. Also the Europeans at Whydah had spread the most alarming reports of the King's hatred of the Eng lish, apparently in order to keep the English and the King as far apart as pas Bible, and thereby to hide their own mis deeds from inconvenient publicity. But the Commodore, besides his unquestiona ble pluck and love of adventure, posses sed certain special aptiterdee for the mis sion. Among others, he had been per sonally acquainted with the King's father; and he carried about him, if we are rightly informed, a substantial and very useful mark of his regard. So, with per haps a few qualms he sent his ships on a fourteen days' cruise, and, accompanied by Captain Luce and Dr. Haran, and joined on hie way by the Wesleyan mid eionary, he landed at Whydah on the 22d of December, 1862. - He was received moat cordially by the Yavogah end chiefs, with drums beating, colors flying, mus kets firing, dancing, and war songs, and was also treated to a sight of the manoen yen of a slave hunt. MI along the road the party was treated with great respect. Presents of water, fowls, and goats, met them everywhere, accompani&l with the usual amount of firing, drumming, dan cing, singing, ete„ and a series of °nein lees speech, ~ signifying the general de sire of the st eaters to "go to war and cut el' heads for their master." A Prince was ordered to attend them on their jour ney, and the Kidg sent three of his - sticks." by special messengers. to meet them on their way—gold stick, silver stick, and all the rest .of it, of course, just like St. James' or the Tuileries—pos.. eibly a well-meant endeavor to reassure them that, notwithstanding the odd tone of the "speeches " his majesty was a good Christian like King after all, ever: if he did go to war "for an idea" now acd then, like Boma of his brethren. On the 10th, the King received thein in state at Cannah, eight miles from his cap ital. They were carried three times round the square of the palace with much cere mony. Then they entered the gates of the courtyard. and beheld his sable majesty seated with about a hundred wives round him. 'most of them young and exceed ingly pretty," at the upper end of a sort of state avenue of variegated umbrellas, under which were congregated his princi pal chiefs. All around stood "the Guards," a household brigade consisting, In this iustauce, of a remarkably fine body ot ATIDILODR, of whose soldierly bearing and arcuracy in loading and firing tem commodore everywhere speaks with much admiration : "The King .was reclining on a raised dais, about three feet high. coveted with crimson cloth. smoking his pipe One of his wives held a glass sugar basin for him to sue, in. He was dressed very plainly, the utter pert ot his bedy being bare,' ,with only a silver chair' holding some fetish charm round his neck, and an un pretending cloth round Los waiee" All this, except, perhaps, the spitting apparatus, is civilized enoughi if one only reads it rightly. This dais might have done duty at the last lord mayor's hall and "the upper part of the body" of half the ladies in the ball room might have been described with exactly the same fidelity, if the Court Journal on the cio casion,. had chanced to be written by a blunt commodore, instead of veiling its descriptions of "low" dress under the cowl:atonal euphemisms. This prelim inary interview, however, was simply one of ceremony. There were the usual in ESTABLISHED 1842. quires about the Queen's health, the trav elers' j mrney, and our form of govern merit, EN/ten-fashion ; the Amaz one per formed their feats very creditably. branish ed "gigantic razors,' and cut off imagin wy heads with them, just like a sham fight, at a review ; and the audience ended with the indispensable present of a bottle of rum all round. Our own reserve in the matter is, however, curiously parodied in those parts: "No one is permitted to see the King drink ; all turn their faces away, CIA a large cloth is held LLD by his wives while the royal month takes in the liquid."
