STRAIN, Sec'y, RETUKNED.—Major General Negley re turned to the city on Saturday from hid brief visit to Washington. The General will shortly leave for his command in the Army of the Cumberland. All the stories set afloat by sensation newspaper corre spondents in relation to this brave and efficient young Major General were with oat the slightest foundation in tact. It is true that the General, for reasons welch ' be deemed satisfactory to himself, d , -sired to sever his connection with the Army of the Cumberland, in which he had won such imperishable laurels, but he was told by his superiors at Washington that his services could not be dispensed with in the West. He, therefore, goes back to raj )in his old comrades in arms, and we may soon hear from him again. as at Stone Myer, etc , leading his invincible column,.; against the enemy. The pruning hook is doubtless of service in tee army ir lop ping off its useles and superabundant branches, but it were worse than folly to raise it against such young and vigorous limbs as General Negley. He leaves on Friday for Chattanooga, with the warm est wishes of hosts of friends in his uat Ire city. NEW Goons.—The reader's attention is especially directed to the advertisement of J. W. Barker k Co , in another col umn. This firm has a reputation in this city, rrid throughout Westorii Pennsyly❑ ma, second to no other house. We leel sate in recommending the public to pat ronize this firm, for we brow that they sell goods as reasonable as any other house east or west. The head of the firm here. Jas. W, Barker, has had many years perieuee in the dry goods business, and, assisted by his son, who is a partner, aid ed by a full corps of experienced clerks, euitomepe rosy rely not only in getting good bargains, but that they will lie promptly arid courteously waited upon. ROBBER - 1. -A hold robbery was perpe- trated in Ternperanceville on Stitorday night. It appears that some time during the night the store of lr Wirte, who is also postmaster there, was entered and a large amount of goods carried off. All the letters in the postoflice were ritiA, and of course everything of value which they contained was taken. They also st-_ , le fourteen dollars in coin, five hundred stamped envelopes, and 4.urteen dollar!, worth of stamps. A ronaerable qua'rtity of dry goods, cutlery, etc., was carried infl. The fact of the robbery was at once communicated to the Government c 6c ere here, and the matter will be thorn uglily investigated. POPLINS M. MENTZER, Market st THE ESPY CASE AGAIN. —W e not iced one day last week that Eipy had beef convicted bye court-martial on a charge of desertion, and sentenced to be banged ; but states that through some informality in the proceedings he was likely to escape so severe a penalty. It now appears that the record not setting forth that two thirds of the court concurred in the sentence, the proceedings were returned "disap proved," by Gen. Brooke, and Espy, ÜBE, therefore, been released and returned to his regiment. He had a most narrow escape, if this statement be correct, and will not be in a hurry to desert again. 1. - NITED STATES CIRCUIT COURT. —This court will meet iu this city on Monday next, when the rule to show cause why attachments for contempt against the City Councils should not be issued, will come up for hearing. The Chronicle under stands that there is but one attorney en gaged in pressing this matter now, all the others, or nearly all of them, having agreed to accept the terms of compromise offered by the city. This is the right course. These terms are the very best the city can give, and those who look for more may, to nee a homely phrase, "go farther and speed worse.' , pp , site P,,itoffice Visrrenox.—The Grand Patriarch of the Encampment branch, and G. Master of the L. 0. 0. F., with the G. , Secretary an/ other officers of the Grand Lodge and Grand Encampment of Pennsylvania, have arrived in the city for the purpose of official visitation to the subordinate Lodges and Encampments in this and ad joining counties. We understand that during the week they will visit Rochester, Beaver county ; Brownsville, Uniontown, and Connellevislie, Fayette county ; and probably Lodges in Armstrong county. EOON TERFETT POSTAL CURRENCY.—Many persons do not know the counterfeit fifty cent postal currency from the genuine. There are marks on the spurious that , if oh• served, will at once show the countereit. Oa the counterfeit the final "E, — in the words "United States Postage," over the head of Washington, is dropped, and the letter "8," in the word "Treasurers," extends higher up than the other letters. Another test is that, in the spurious, the ''y," in the word "Dep,,sitory," does not touch the border on the back of the bor der. HEAR YE! It is known that Meade on one side and Lee on the other, are mancouvering for favorable positions, but the opinion prevails in mili tary circles here that Lee will no) risk a battle outside of his inePanehments on the youth side of the Rapidan, which can be held by a small force against a great army, and leave him at liberty to send part of his forces to attack the body, and com pel them, as before, to fall back north of the Rappahannock. Brigadier General Hatch has been as signed to duty at St. Louis, in charge of a cavalry departintmt to be established at that point CAPE RArE, October 31.—The steamer China from Liverpool 24th, Queenstown 23tfi, passed here on Saturday evening, with three day's later news. A Paris letter to the London Daily _Vt les anticipates that the semi-official reed of Palls will receive orders to say that, after all, the people simply desire annexation to France. The London Herald says the capture of the steamer Sir Robert Peel off Rio Grande, by the Federals, is exciting at tention. It is alleged that there was not the slightest ground for her seizure. The London Times publishes a long letter written by the well known cm , respondent Mysterious, " commenting upon and showing the importance of the seizing of the steam rams in the Mersey, and expressing the belief that the public will stand by the Government in their de terminatiot, to defeat fraudulent contri vances. Petersburg accounts say it is the gen eral belief that there will be a diplomatic meeting between Russia and the Western powers before Christmas. Trio Time. , has an editorial holding op in moving touts the threatening position of affairs throughout the world, and urg ing that it is the plain duty of England to seize and use all the opportunities of her position, and as arbitrator make and keep peace while btir. can. The Army and _Var4. Gazette considers the Southern cause more - hopeful now than for some time past, and thinks that if similar apathy or non-success on the part of the Federals should mark the close of the. year, there will be a great chance of the South oh• tamping an art - nistice, and that armistice will lead to an adjustment of the present &frit ulties. .NKVI YORE, November 2. —The Times' Washington specials eav :—A gentleman just from Richmond says the rebel Gov• ernrnent is seizing all the boots and shoes in that city for the use of I_e's army, winch is almost barefoot. Two of the Herald's correspondents, Hart and Hen dricks, were gobbled yesterday, at An born, by Moseby's guerrillas. Maj. Gem Butler lies been assigned to the command of the Eight fenth Army Corps, Depart rmnit of Virginia and North Carolina, in place of Gem Foster, who is ordered to report here to the Adjutant General. Cir cumstances indicate that gen. Foster,„vill have command of the defenses of Wesh• ington. Guerrillas continue their operations on the wagon trains. The impression pre vaile at headquarters that Lee is disposed to fight, and Meade's intention was to ac ccmmodate him at the earliest opportuni ty. There are those, however, who con tinue to think that Lee's army has been materially reduced, and any show of in tention to fight is merely to conceal his weakness. --- New YORK, November 2.—The ship Star of the West reports as frdlows : October 17, latitude4B::3o, longitude 27, sad a vessel twelve miles distant on fire. The ship was painted black and had the appearance of an American vessel. LOUISVILLE Nov. '2.—The Journal learns that S. D. Lee, Wheeler, Roddy and Forrest. are in the neighborhood of Decatur, Courtlaiad, and Tuscumbia, south of the Tennessee river, with a combined force of 16,000 rebel cavalry, prepared to operate on the line of General Grant's communications.
