A.RREST Or AN ALLEGED MURDERER - -The Mayor's police, on Wednesday night, ar• rested a German named Joseph Snyder, charged with the murder of hie wife. It appears that Snyder, lived anything but a quiet, harmonious life. Their dif ficulties grew out of a difference of relig ious opinion, and he was in the habit of beating and abusing her. On last Wed• nesduy night Mrs. Snyder put clothes to y soak for the wash, and was last seen about nine o'clock. Her disappearance caused quite a Ben • Elation in the neighborhood, and some of the people living in the vicinity made in formation of font play before the Mayor. • Snyder, since the disappearance of his wife, has been in the habit of sneaking in to his house at all hours, and his conduct was saspicions. On being arrested Sny der accounted for hie wife's absence by stating that he took her to Cleveland and left her at the house of P. Zimmerman, who keeps a tavern called the "Golden Eagle," she refusing to return with him. Mayor Sawyer immediately on hearing this statement telegraphed to Cleveland to ascertain the truth of Snyder's story. In the meantime, the accused has been c3mmitted to prison for a further hear. Irg. SUPREME COURT.—In this Court yes— terday, Judges Lowrie, Woodward, Strong and Thompson on the bench, the following cases for this county were dis. posed nt: Pennsylvania Railroad Company vs. McTighe, C. P. Argued by Hampton for plaintiff in error, and by Marshall dr. Brown and Dickens, contra. 26 CENTS Allegheny Bank vs. Brennan et nx : D. C. Mitchell & Potts vs. same, and Bark— lie & Brown ye. same. Argued toeether by Mires for Allegheny Bank, by Hamil ton & Acheson for Mitchell & Potts and Barklie & Brown. and by Shaler, and Kirkpatrick & Mellon for Brennan. John J. Case, was, on motion of A. M. Blown, admitted to practice as an Attorney in this Court. J. D. Hancock was also admitted, on motion of G. P. Hamilton, Cowss PLag..--Tbe race today at Collins Park promises to be one et more than usual interest. There are four en tries—namely "Fanny Forest," "Annie Laurie," "Lady Anne," and "General Thomas," but it is conceded that the race lies between the first three. "Fanny For• rest" is a very reliable mare, and at the late fair at Beaver surprised her friends by defeating "Soft Soap." "Annie" is also a tip top nag, though with less of a reputation than "Fanny." "Lady Anne" is but little known, but her friends say that she has quite a fine turn of speed, and "can bag the entire lot." "General Thomas" is a mere colt, and as he is to go to saddle while the others will go to harness, he may be closer up at the finish than his opponents expect. Boma AND &togs —Now that the time faitt approaching when "ClllllDeeember's wintry blasts Makes deltic and forest bare It is but common prudence for people to prepare to meet the "wintry blasts refer red to by the poet; and among the prepa rations to be made is the purchase of a good and substantial pair of boots or shoes. Should any of our readers be in doubt as to where they can purchase such articles, we can relieve their dilemma by directing them to the establishment of D. S. Diffenbacher, No. 15 Fifth street, where they can be suited in any article in the boot and shoe line at prices as reason• able as they can be had in the city. ALTERATION IN THE SCHOOL LAW.—The Harrisburg papers state that, by the act of April 14th 1868, the sum appropriated tor the support of common schools for the school year ending on the first Mon d ly of June, 1864, is to be•divided among the several districts, in proportion to the the number of children attendiag school therein, and not, as formerly, according to the number of resident taxables. This is an important alteration, and will ma terially change the amounts received by the different districts.' E Noma OPERA TROUPE^ —By reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that this celebrated Opera Troupe has consented to stay one night longer, and that this evening Miss Caroline Ritch— ings will take a benefit, on which occa sion she will appear, supported by the en • tire Troupe, in Donnizetti's Comic Opera entitled the "Daughter of the Regiment.' ' This popular toupe need no "puff" from us. Its excellence is well and widely known. DEATH FeOM APOPLEXY.—We regret to learn of the death of Mrs. Patterson, wife of ex• Sheriff Patterson, which took place at the family mansion in Robinson town. ship Wednesday evening. The deceased it appears was in excellent health a few moments before her demise, and died quite suddenly. Her death is attributed to an apopletic attack. She was a very estimable lady, and her demise will be a source of deep regret to a large cifcle of relatives and friends. Reported Capture of the Lebanon Train. Difficulty Between- General Price and General Holmes FROM THE ARMY OF THE POTObleiC NEW YORE, Oct 22.—The steamship Hibernia from Liverpool on the 12th, ar rived at her wharf to-day, and brings the following news: GREAT BRITAIN.—The Daily News be- Levee that every English gentleman whose reason has not 1, Zen blinded by prejudice and passion, wi congratulate himself on the steps taken by the Government in Fri zing the rams, The Morning Herald considers the aot as significant that Esrl Russel has inc (limbed to the pressure put upon him by the Federal Government. Two war vessels had been on the alert to prevent any attempted departure of the Rams. The character of the speeches at the N. I'. Banquet to the officers of the. Rue sian fleet had invoked considerable com ment in England. It is stated in regard to the Mexican question, that the Emperor Napoleon has .addrrsped an autograph letter to the Arch Duke Maxamillian, fully approving of his reply to the Mexican deputation. PeLtyn—A Paris correspondent o f the London Times believes that it is true the Prince Czatorriski has demanded of the French and English Governments their recognition of the Poles as belligerents, and that Franca will not at present accede to the request. What the Royalty of England may do is unknown. Affairs in Poland continued without change. A' Paris telegram says of General Foray's return to France, that it will not be fol lowed by any reduction of the French army in Mexico. WesetzwroN, Oct. 22.—Ac; aunts from the army cf the Potomac, received to night, say that it has been ascertained that none of the rebel infantry were en gaged with Gen. Kilpatrick's cavalry, near Rockland mills, on Monday last.. A bri p.,ade of rebel sharpshooters dismounted, and partially deluded our cavalry into the belief that they were attacked by the in fantry. Gen. Lee's army, with the exception of Gen. Swart's cavalry, crossed the Rap— pahannock on Monday at Rappahannock Gen. Stuart tell back on the river on Tuesday, not stopping in Warrenton, through which he passed, although he ad mitted that hie men had not enjoyed a meal for 24 houre. The officers of Gen. Lee's army stated, that their rapid retreat was caused by a destitution of provisions. The bridge over the Rapidan had been carried away by the storm of Thuesday night, and Gen. Lee laid a pontoon bridge over which he crossed his army to the south side of the river. It is believed that there is no c - msiderable rebel force now north of the Rapidan, unless it be portions of Geu. Stuart's cavalry with his artillery. It was currently reported by rebel officers, that Gen. Lep had driven Gen. Meade towards Washington and destroyed a portion of the Orange and Alexandria railroad ; that either Gen. Hill's or Gen. Ewell's corps would now be immediately despatched to the assistance of General Bragg, and this report is strengthened by previous rumors that one of these corps was about t) start thither before the late movement began. Tee rtb.l nowepapere soy that Gen. Lee captured 10,000 of our troops, a full battery, and a large number of wagons during his late campaign It is sufficient to remark, that the official re ports contradict this statement. The Wurrentown railroad has not been die turbe&by the enemy. We now hold the countrPeast of the Rappahannock. There are uo signs of a battle. I=l=l LOCISVITLE, October 2 2.—Prevalent ru• more say the Lebanon train had been cap tured to day. The beat information pro curable says the train put back safely into Lebanon, but gives no reason for its return. The Knoxville Journal says the rebels attacked Col. Watford yesterday beyond Philadelphia, Tenn., and captured his battery of mountain howitzer and a por tion of his wagon train. Our loss is about 100—we took about the same numb r of prisoners and drove the enemy back be yond Philadelphia to day, but whether this be a raid, or movement in force, Burnside is prepared for them. We still hold all our grcund in the north east part of the State. Loyal Tennesseoans are flocking to Burosides' standard faster than they can be armed. The greatest activity pre vails in military circles. CAIRO, Oct. 21.—The Memphis Ar•gus has Little Rock news to the 11th ; all quite there on the 26th. Kirby Smith visited the rebel army at Arkadelphia and finding Price's forces demoralized re lieved him from command, and placed Gen. Holmes in his stead. Theofficers and men harbored ill feelings and hatred tow ards Holmes ever since the battle at Helena. The consequence of placing Holmes over Price produced immediate mutiny both with officers and men. A bitter feeling existed between Price and Holmes which resulted in a challenge to fight a duel; the difficulty was setled by their friends. CiNciNNATI, Oct. 28.—The funeral of Gen. _Win. U. Lytle, who was killed at Chickamauga, took place this afternoon. After thictervicas at Christ's Churoh, the procession, consisting of several regiments of State militia and volunteers, battery and artillery officers, the various courts and city council, and a long line of citi— zens in carriages, moved through the streets. Flags half mast through the city, and many tokens of respect to the memory of the decessed shown along the march. FORTRESS MONROE, October 22.—The Richmond Inquirer of October 20th states that a dispatch from Gen. Lee to Gen. Cooper, dated October 20th says : Gen. Stuart yesterday appeared at Rockland. The advance of Gen. Kilpatrick's cavalry division was attacked by Fi's Lee on his flanks and rear, and was pursued until he reached his infantry supporta at Haymar ket and Gainesville. The Examiner also contains the following items : Dr. W. P. Rocky made his escape from Pittsylvania jail last Sunday night and is at large. NAPY D SPAWN INT, WASHINGTON, Oct. 21.—Sir—You will be pleased to learn that the court of inquiry before which you recently appeared at New York, have re— ported that in their opinion there is no necessity or propriety of further proceed— ings in the case.
