The brilliant repu tation it acquired iu our city on its pre vious visit, and the immense Patronage it has received in all the principal cities of the United States. is a convincing proof of its superiority over all others, cense quelitly, the mere announcement of its advent in our city is sufficient to call out an overflowing house. The admirers of Mr. So werby (and titer name is legion) will of course be present to listen to his matchless descriptions of the scenes of war • while the attractive performances of Mrs. Somerby will draw out the lovers of refined music, Those having friends or relatives participating in this mighty struggle—and who have not— will of course feel anxious to witness the various localities where they are position. ed, and the engagements in which they have taken part. GLOVES DRAWER BRAIDS We may, therefjre, safely say that Ma sonic Hall will not be large enough to accommodate one half the vast throng who will flock to witness the Polyorama. Will our Derriccrat ic friends bring the news to Headilviar. tors? Ill'Heesport Demonstration. In common with hundreds of others, we tools passage yesterday on the Con nellaville cars for McKeesport, at which place we arrived at noon. We found the town alive with Democrats, who had came in from the country—flags were waving— drums bzating,—processiona marching, and the signs of a large meeting were every where visible. After the various delega tions from the adjoining boroughs and townships bad arrived, and time had been allowed them to partake of the generoais hospitality of the noble hearted Democ racy of McKeesport, who, as they prom• ised, kept their "latch•strings out," the people gathered at the stand, which was beautifully decorated with hickory boughs, flags, banners and streamers. The meeting was called to order by elec ting Jno. F. Richards, eeq , of Elizabeth, President, appointing Col. W. L. Miller, Col. Jno. Sill, Hamilton Stewart, Thos.' Kinney, Geo. Altmeyer, Col. Jno. Neil, Dr. Jesse Penn v. Thos. Reynolds, McKinley Fife, Jacob Mourer, Wm. Cook, A. J. Brown. Joseph Wampler, M. Snell, Jno. Little, and Wm. McClusky Vice Presidents. Dr. David Penny, Dr. W. H. Hill and B. W. Yunker acted as Secretaries. • The meeting was addressed by J. H. Hopkins, eq. and Prof. Burns. Mr. Hopkins spoke for over two hours, and made one of the most eloquent and argn limutative speeches that it has been our good fortune to listen to during the cam• paign. No candid, reasonable man who heard him but will adMit that he fortfied all his positions with incontrovertible facts and figures, arid we feel assured that his speech hhd the effect of convert ng the doubtful, confirming the wavering, and urging the steadfast Dnmecrats to redouble their efforts to-day. At the conclusion of Mr. Hopkins' remarks, three cheers were given for the speaker, and three times three for the Union, Woodward, Lowrie and the county ticket. Prof. Burns was the next speaker, but owing to the short apace of time in tervening before the care left for the city, he was compelled to be very brief. The meeting adjourned to meet again in the evening, when it would be addressed by J. I). Hancock, W. J. McGinn, in English, and Francis Felix in German. The meet ing in dayliet was large, but thousai.d. , of hard.fisted laboring men from the mi i and workshops would be present las , night, and the meeting promised to be a. tremendo us outporing. As this is the last Democratic meeting we shall report before the grand decisive battle is fought, we close by asserting that the indomi table Democrats of McKeesport are as generous a set of men as can he found on the top of the ground, and predict that they will do their duty to day Meetings Last Night. Largeand enthusiastic Democratic meet. lugs were held last night in various parte of the city. The late hour at which we arrived from STEleeeport deterred us from visiting all of them or making as full a re port of these we did attend as we could wish. The meeting at the Battery, Third "'aril. was larger beyo,,d precedent, and eidrd ever hy.iohn(John :ary, tag.. when] if was intended mould preside being necessarily absent,) I assishid by Jos. The meeting in front id the Western Elided, on Water street, was also very large and eulbusiaslic. J. C. Buffin acted as Chairman, waisted by T. A. Spence, - J. Ruth, I'. B. Meaniir, Jas. Kennedy, W. Able speeches were made by Ales. Mcllvaine, Hon. Judge Shaler, J. R. Hunter, James Irwin, (our candidate fur County Trees. urer) and MI. Hutchinson, of Manchester. The best of feeling prevailed, and the in terest of the meeting was kept up until a late hour. close our notices of meetings for last night with that held in Pitt township, which was crganizi , d by calling Robert Coni.ell to the chair, and the appointment of the usual number of Vice Presidents and Secretaries. H. Smith made a forcible and argumentative address, and was t-.liowed by A. J. Baker. who made on this occasion one of his beet speeches. A. 11. AI waine closed the speaking in an elo• quest appeal to the Democracy to stand by the Union and the Constitution. Thankful for Small Favors. Some of the superlatively enthusiastic gentlemen of the Abolition school, en deavor to extemporize a grand sensation on Friday evening last in the Seventh Ward. It appears that while a Democrat ic meeting was in progress about two wemts ago, some persons carrying a tran• Tarency with the name of Woodward and Lao vrie, stopped in front of a dwelling on Pennsylvania Avenue, There were several ladies in the house ; and one of them per ceiving the inscription, playfully cried out "take that. away, ' intending to provoke remonstrances from the rest, who were of Democratic pioclivities, and they pro tested against off-ring any offense to the candidates of their party. In a few min utes the men with the transparency moved on, and no one thought any more of the incident; but there being a dearth of sen sational capital in the city, the gentry who worship crisped capillary adornments, having heard of the matter by accident determined to magnify it into a most ex halted (IT;rt uf heroism on the part of the young lady, who never dreamed that she had done anything calculated to- entitle her to more credit than was due to an of to produce a moments hilarity. She, however, was dommed to be the victim of a woolly head demonstration, and having procured a photograph album, which we presume was filled with "pictures in little" of celebrated "Americare of African de scent" and adorers of ebony specimens of humanity, the devotees of universal eman oipation proceeded with grand ceremonies, including musical and dramatical per formancee, to present the album to thelady, who, unthinkingly, had won immortal ity by objecting to the exhibition of a Demobratic transparency. We are informed that the great effort was entirely successful, and that the Rev erned orator of the cccasion discharged his duty with abandon which it was charm• ing to witness in these degenerated days. We are happy to inform the Abolition party that all those who devoted them selves to this mighty display of their gen erons appreciation of female devotion to the cause of "the coming man," otherwise known as " Judge Kelly's everlasting nigger," have almost entirely recovered from the exhaustion and nervous- debility caused by so exciting a scene. It is evident that "the world moves," and if A. G. Curtin is not elected it will cot be for want of a noble appreciation of the smallest efforts of Abolition ladies, to aid the cause of shoddy and negro equality. Meeting at Alpacille. The Deniceracy ot nod C‘.ll' tersville had a rorishly meeting at Cord tersville on Saturday c - ?Tring. The meet ing was organized by calling Capt. N. J. Bigley t 3 the chair, and electing the fol lowingofficers : Robt. Cornell. Wm. Welsh, D. Lloyd, W. C. Griffey,Wm. Hayden, J. Marks, Maj. H. Cavitt, John Guilty and Henry Barnett as Vice Presidents, Wm. Osborne, John F. gelling, Alt. Guffey and A. J. Bigley Sebretaries. Mr. A. J. Ba ker was introduced and addressed the the meeting in his usual elcquent style. Mr. Eberlee was next called upon and ad dressed the German portion ct the asstm blage. Mr. Linn followed Mi. Eberlee and during his remarks paid a well merit ed compliment to Miss Allis Guffey, of Guffey's Station, who by her bravery and courage saved the Affierican flag from be. ing trampled in the dust by the Union Leaguers, who were on their way to a shoddy convention at Uniontown. The following resolutions were proposed by A. J. Bigley and unanimously adopted : Resolved. That it is the duty of every man, and a right guaranteed to him by the Constitution to come forward on Tuesday and cayt his vote f..r whom he pleases, trade s of any opposition that may be hurled esain , t them. Resolved, That in Gee. W. Weodwa:d, we ro om:dab an honest citizen. an ableindge._onewtto is unconditiovally in lacer ol he Union as irwtM, and the Constitution as it is. To the disgrace of the Republican por tion of the assemblage, it must be said they left nothing undone to disturb the meeting, but their efforts were all in vain. He is not only stronger in the centre, but his flanks are now well protected by fresh troops. Rumors again fly thick and fast regard ing the retrograde 'movements of Lee's army and the advance of Meade's. Of the first nothing definite is known, and of the last nothing definite can be said. Gold is accumulating in the Treasury and will be kept there until specie pay ment is resumed, except at receiving periods and payment of the interest on the public debt. Trurasnev.—Deserters from Lee's army report that only two divisions of Long street's corps were sent to Bragg, Picket's division, which was so badly used up at Gettysburg, being left behind. None of A. P. Hill's were sent. One division of Ewell's corps was first sent to Charleston and subsequently to Bragg, thus leaving in front of the Army of the Potomac about 40,000 men, or two corps. The commanding General's headquarters were at Orange Court House on Friday. but Lee has lately spent a large portion of hie time at Richmond. WASHINGTON, Octobe;l2.—lntelligence of an authentic character did not reach Washington till last night that the rebels had abandoned the line of the Rapidan and retreated in a southward direction. On the fact being known at Gen. Meade's headquarters yesterday morning, Gen. Buford's cavalry were sent a , ross the Rapidan, and found that the enemy's evacuation of the south bank had been completed. On proceeding inland they came upon a portion of Stuart's cavalry, evidently covering the retreat of the rebel infantry, Considerable skirmishing ensued, bat it did not result in our ascertaining whether the euetny had fallen back on Gordons ville, or whether it was attempting some flank movement to get between Gen. Meade's army and Washington, in a sim ilar manner to Stonewall Jackson's move ment on Pope over the same ground. The prevailing impression seems to be that the rebels have gone to Gordonsville and Richmond, where sufficient garrisons may be left, and the remainder of Lee's army sent to Bragg and Beuregard. If, on the contrary, the enemy are attempting a,'flank movement, our forces are fully prepared for it. Col. Cornie, commissary at 'Gen. Meade's headquarters, has come tip to night, and reports the rebel evacuation of tne bee of the Rapidan to be most corn piece, and has been very rapidly made. Operations About to be Resumed Arrival of the City of Baltimore &c., &c., Nary Yoax, October 12.—The Tribune says : Since the McClellan subscription in the army of the Potomac was stopped, Gen. Meade has issued a general order calling attention to paragraph 229 a army regulations, which prohibits deliberation! or discussions among any class of military men, having the object of conveying praise or censure or any mark of approbation towards their superiors, or others in the' military service. Gen. Meade says this regulation has hitherto to . a considerable extent been practically disregarded in this army, and recent occurrences make it incumbent up on the commanding General to insist upon a rigid observanceof its requirements, and that there may be no misunderstandi ng up on the subject, it is declared that meet ings or combinations among officers or. men for the`purpose of expressing regard for their superiora or others in the military service in the way of presentations, or their disapprobation of the acts of their superiors, or others in the military service by resolutions, will be considered as vio 'talons df the regulations and noticed ac• cordingly. Earl Russell's speech, asserting that Russia having failed to fulfill treaties, has virtually forfeited her title to possess Poland, attracts great attention in Paris *coarnals New YORK, October 12.—The following from the correspondent of the Baltimore American from Charleston harbor on the sth inst, is of interest. There are indica tions now that the present inactivity ivill not be of many days continuance. Gen. Gilmore has forced his works forward with remarkable rapidity, considering their magnitude and the natural and artificial obstructions in his way. The troops are all worked hard, every regiment on the Island taking its turn every other day in the trenches for fatigue duty, all this has, how ever, been cheerfully done, the soldiers having an unlimited confidence in Gen. Gilmore. The navy is also precariug for the renewal of the attack. Withi n th e last 24 hours there have been important arrivals here of means for the remnval of the obstructions, which we may soon hope to see successfully applied. BOSTON, Oct. 12 —The following ex• tract of a letter is from one of the bont's crew of the Honsatonie, engaged in the attack on Sumter on the Bth of Sept.: " Columbia, S. C., Sept. 21st—We have been in this city one week to night. All our boat's crew, numbering fifteen men and two officers, all well and not irjnred. We were in the Charleston jail four days. Chaplain H. Chamball, of the 10th Con necticut, preached to ns yesterday. There were ninety-six men and fourteen officers taken at Sumter on the night of the Bth of Sept. We think we shall be exchanged and sent home by way of Richmond in a few days. We enjoy ourselves singing, &c., and have the liberty of the yard all day long." NEW YORK, October 12.—The steamship City of Baltimore arrived hare to-day. James Buchanan has arrived in London. It is reported that the relations between the French Ambassadors and the Roman Government are not friendly, on account of its protection of assassins. Several engagements between the Rus sians and Poles are reported, but without definite result. The Islands of Confu and Pexi have prnnounced in favor of union with Greece. It was feared in Paris that the British Government was about to become less in dulgent towards the South as regards the building of vessels intended for war pur poses, which will effect the policy of the French Government and the Southern Cause. NEW YORK, Oct. 12.—The Boston Herald has a letter from the fleet off Charleston dated October Bd, which says, Last evening Gen. Gilmore sent one of his Greek fire shells into Charleston which set fire to four bvildings ; the fire burnt for over two hours. There will be warm work here before this week is over if nothing interferes in the meantime. BOBTOII, October 12,—A letter received in this city from Beaufort, says the pirate Sumter was not destroyed in Charleston harbor, but is now in Wilmington, armed and awaiting a chance to run the blockade. There are eight 11. S. steamers at present blockading that port. WASHINGTON, Oct. 12.—1 t appears from a telegram received to•day, dated Chatta nooga, yesterday, that Gen.
