James P. Barr, i DAILY POST. dajljlt post- advancbb bates! mail. $8 00 Slit months, *’ 425 ThWfc " 2 15 “ 70 One week, delivered in the city Sing!6 cppiefl- To agents per hundred..^. Taxation. ITrom the Westmoreland Republican' The Federal taxes cannot be precisely estimated, and no specific information can be obtained in regard to them. They are not published and are enveloped in imp;n etrable mystery. No stronger proof can be adduced than that they are excessive UDjost., If-one people are to be ground to the earth and exhausted by extortions, much of which are caused by fradulent contracts, the support of negroes, payment of enormous wages to crowds of greedy office holders, and the general corruption of the agents of the Administration—they should at least be allowed to know the ex - that of the stealings. No one objects to being taxed for the fair cost of suppress mg therebellion by all fair means; bat in a tree country the accounts of expenses ot the Government shonld be open to every citizen, for thus alone can profli gacy be prevented; and besides every man ha ß a right to know what is done' with his money Our people earn their money by hard labor. They are justified in checking, to the extent of their power, the tree and easy way in which the Federal tax asses sors and collectors take it from them, to be squandered without stint or limit— -1 hey are folly justified in exacting from their agents like economy with that which they themselves practice, and in rebuking the office-holders who set themselves up as their, meters. r . There are some items of Federal taxa tion, however, which cannotbe concealed. I be entire debt and liability of th« Gov ernment is hot less than two thousand mil lions of dollars. The annual interest at BIX per cent, is one hundred and twenty millions, of which, as Pennsylvania has abont one sixth of the loyal population of the country, she will have to pay twenty millions a year, beingabout seven times the present State tax. This, however, is btU i tor °*t 0 Teac ’ and 63 - iai: within the mark. Nextyaar, even this enormous tax must bedoubled atleast. And so it w be perpetually accumulating until amounts to confiscation. Tho ruin wi be complete, and revolution will be icevi able. Ihe law taxing real estate is still in lorc , e ’“ OD S h its operation has been sus pended tor the present: Let no man hope to escape. Every bouse and farm is now mortgaged, by that Jaw, and vast numbers will be sold by the .Federal marshals if the war is continued, as at present carried on, with reckless disregard of the rights and interests of the people. The income-tax is worse than a mere extortion of money. Its assessment toms loose upon society gangs of spies, inform ers, and inquisitors, who dog the footsteps ot freemen, pry into their business, ten der to them entrapping oaths, require com plicated aecoanta and answers to cunning questions about their most private affaire. man’s'rStrreet issafe. It is true that in this country, these revolting and de grading functions have been executed by the officers with commendable regard for the feelings of our people, but even with this exceptional advantage, onr citizens have been harrassed and embarasaed as they never were before. Unfortunately, we are but beginning onr troubles, The end m not y rt. When it comes, un ver aal bankruptcy will sweep over the land.— i he. only remedy is an entire change of policy and practice—in turning ont the office holders who are eating np the peo ple s Substance—in substituting honest men for profligate scoundrels—economy for responsibility for un bounded license—regard for industrious white men for care ot lazy negroes—and respect for the Constitution and laws rath er than far A bolitionists, speculators, con tractors and usurpers. How Mrs.- Bonaparte Dresses. AParis correspondent gossips as fol lows abont'the dresses of Eugenie. He It ts umvorsaHy conceded that she is the best dressed lady ot Enrope. She Bets the female fashions for the world ; and employs not o'hly modistes but artistes to invent them. Her ‘'department of ready madaclotuing” 13 something immense.— lo say to that she has a new dress for every day in the year, would not begin lo conveyances of the extent and variety ot her wardrobe. Iu the front centre of the ceiiing of her Majesty a private dressing room, there iB a trap door opening into a. spaciona hall above, filled wuh • ‘presses,” each con taining a dress, exhibited on a frame looking like an effigy of the Em; teas her eelt. In a part ot these “presses,” there is a little railway leading to the aforesaid trap door, through which the dress is “de scended” info the presence of the Em press.- .If it “pleased her MsjesLy,” the dress is lifted from the frame and placed upon the imperial person; if not, it is whipped np, and another comeß down in its place; and not unlreqnently another, amd another, and another, so fastidious is the taste which gives the law to the world of fashion. In public the Empress never looks over dressed. A severe simplicity always characterizes her toilette, while every thing, iu material, fit and color, is as eom pleta in “harmony as a sonata of Beetho ven. This is the great secret of the “art of dress. A woman who wears discor dant nbbona, breaks that Bense of visual melody, commonly called “good taste," without which not even the Dncheßs of Golconda can dress well, Certain colors are incongruous and inharmonic as cer tain notes in music; and the artists who compose dresses for the .Empress Eugenie, study those natural laws of harmony as carefully as the painter the lines of his palette. Just pow it has been discovered that the pamsol,-the dress, the bonnet, the gloves, and the gaiters, must be all of the same color to produce the most unique and pleasing, effect-; And thus a com pletely dressed lady no longer offends the eye with a contradiction of colors of all the shades and without the order of the rainbow, but presents _a perfect picture, os melodiously charming to the eye as the air of ‘Home, Sweet Home’-* is tothe i The Truth Sharply Spoken. Earl Bussellis hearing a little of the opinion which the world at large will en tertain of his recent letter, where he con fesses that the Government of England has not power to stop its own citizens from warring upon nations with which England is at peace.
