Banks, :accompanied by his staff, is expected soon• to leave New 9rleans for the East.' If this report be true, conjectures will be rife in regard to new Department changes in the army. By the operations of last month the fields of Gen. Banks and Gen. Grant were brought near together, if not completely merged ; and it would unques tionably be better, ere the fall campaign ,commences, for the Washington authori ties to define the soope of action of both commanders, in order to avoid the con flicts of judgment that are most sure to re sult from having two heads to manage where the chief direction should belong to but one. We know of no two officers in the service who have less military jeal ousy than the ones named, nor is it to be doubted that in respect to a desire to co-operate cordially they would perfectly agree ; yet experience has taught that in the control of a wide range of territory where military movements must be su bordinated to one general plan, a single officer should have the supreme anthority. ty. Though allare acquainted with and duly appreciate the excellent generalship' displayed by the former, the sense of the people; we take it, is that Gen. Grant should be allotted the command of the forces . which are to participate in the fu ture movements against the enemy in the Southwest whether Johnston decides to make his stand in the interior or falls back to the Gulf, at Mobile. Gen. Banks, it will be remembered, ranks Gen. Grant as Maj. General of Volunteers, and no one, we suppose, would expect him to act in a subordinate position, though he cheerfully did ao under General Pope in the army of Virginia. It seemstinite probable, then, taking in vie these considerations, that the expect ed departure of Gen. Banks and staff from New Orleans to the East. will not be mere ly for a visit home or a temporary ab sense. There are several positions to 'which the General might be assigned, where he would prove useful. We reckon it is hardly worth while to entertain hopes of his being placed in the War Depart ment, for - which his splendid executive utlents, added to his military experience, peculiarly befit him. If it be true that Gen. Meade has signified his desire to re licquish the command of the Army of the Potomac, here would ecem a "hole" into which the President might insert this "peg." But whatever position Gen B. is to fill, we feel confident that he will be found a faithful, dißeicet and efficient offi cer. Perhaps, indeed. the campaign may take such a turn as shall, by prescribing new theatres of war in the Southwest. make the Departments of Gene. Banks and Grant, distinct and independent, in which case we know of no better com mander for the Gulf Department than its present head.—St. Loui. Rep. Captured at Port Hudson Among the prisoners captured by Gen. Banks at Port Hudson, wits Capt. Lewis, formerly of -Laneaboro', Mass., but at the time in command of a South Carolina rifle company. Lewis was a cative of South Carolina, but resided some years ago in Massachusetts. Ho was a member of the Legislature of that State, together with Gen. Banks, in TB6l, and the two cast their votes for Charles Sumner for United States Senator. The General rec ognized hie old Democratic fellow-laborer among the prisoners. What is equally curious is the fact that but for the vote of Mr. Lewis, no senator could have been chosen. A Womanly Denunciation The Queen of England has written a letter to the mayor of Birmingham res pecting the recent shocking death of Mad. Geneive, the rope danseuse, who was killed by a fall at the Forester's Fete in Aston Park. Her majesty says that this poor woman was "sacrificed to a demor• alined taste, unfortunately prevalent for exhibitions attended with the greatest amount of danger to the performers;" and makes an expression of her horror at such an occurrence as Madame G's death. The Queen finds proof of the demoralizing tendency of each practices in the continu ance of the sports of the day after the events referred to, and calls upon the peo ple to use their influence to check such a depraved taste. Strange Freak of Lightning The Norfolk t Hass. ) County Journal says that in West Wrentham, on Tuesday last, the lightning entered the house of E C. Craig by the window, and visit• ed nearly every room in the building. It committed a variety of freakA, tearing pictures to pieces on the walls, displacing and lieStroying furni• nye. making de vastation everywhere. A young lady who was visiting the family - was struck in the shoulder, the lightning passing down her frame, coming out. at her foot, carrying her gaiter boot with it, and killing a dog which lay on the fLor beside her. She was insensible for some hours. The United States revenue gunboat Re liance, Captain T. M. Dungan, commat..!.- ing, arrived at this port on Sunday night,. from the waters of Virginia, with two prizes in tow, having captured during this cruise six prizes and a lot of contraband-- goods, consisting of whisky, sabres and other articles. On the 4th instant she capttirstia yawl boat, containing a rebel mail ands late file of papers direct from Richmond. Many of the letters are ad dressed to persons in Baltimore. The parties having Lhd mail in charge made their escape after receiving the fire of the boat's crew. Banka and Grant Capture of 'Prizes New Jersey Diarrhea It is quite sufficient forall practical pur poses, to say that diarrhea, dysentery and Asiatic cholera ate one and the same dis ease, differing only in intensity. Diarrhea is a watery looseness ; dysentery is a bloody looseness ; cholera is an immense watery looseness. In diarrhea, there is not mnch pain, necessarily. In dysentery, there is a great deal of pain inevitably. In cholera there is never any pain at all, as to the bowels. In diarrhea discharges always succeed inclination, with no satisfactory discharge, In cholera, desire is followed always by immense and relieving discharges. In all these, there is one never-failing circum stance always and inevitably present, and can never be absent, under any conceiv able circumstances—it is the quenchless instinct of nature calling for absolute rest, bodily quietude, and without that rest a cure is impossible, and with an inevitable event. There isin all these a remorselees thirst. Nature then calls for two things, to sat isfy her longings —rest and drink, and if these two things are done with sufficient promptness, there is a perfect cure in nine cases out of ten. Perfect quietude on a bed, and chewing ice, swallowing as large a piece. as possi ble, until the thirst is perfectly satisfied, is all that is necessary in any ordinary attack of any of these three unenviable diseases. To make assurance doubly sure, keep the abdomen tightly bound with two thlick nessess of wollen flannel, eating nothing but boiled•rice, with boiled milk, in ordin ary cases ; if more violent, let rice be parched as black as coffee generally is then boil and eat; or what is still more efficient. put a pound or more of flour in a linen bag, boil it two hours in milk, take off the skin, dry it, grate it into boiled milk, and eat freely, and nothing else, until the disease is checked. If these bowel com plaints are checked too promptly with laudanum, paregoric or opium, fatal con vulsions take place in a few hours, as to children; an incurable congestion and in• fl emotion of the brain in grown persons. As bowel diseat-ea are the scourage of all armies in the fail cf the year, these aug gestrons should he circulated.—Health Tract.
