Adventure of an Alleged Spy. From the Richmond Sentinel July 19. 'A. few days ago a man calling himself Russell, and claiming to be a correspon dent o f a Richmond paper, and an offi cer in the army, was in Atlanta, Ga. His conduct excited the suspicion of some, and he was placed for some time under ar rest. Nothing, however, appearing pos itively against him, he was discharged and allowed to depart. The Confederacy gives the following particulars of his ca reer in that city, -and of his subsequent ar rest: ' 'He arrived on the evening of the 28th of Jar e, and immediately introduced himself to several as G. M. Russell, Care tain . C. S. A., associate editor and special army Correspondent of a Richmond pa. per. He made himself known to several of the editorial fraternity by calling at their offices and introducing himself as the editor and.sorreePondeet of the Pe' per, by which means he was courteously treated, and allowed to look over the ex changes. He frequently expressed his opinion of certain military movements and sometimes plausibly criticised the ability of certain of our Generals, all done so shrewdly, and with each a natural air as not to excite suspicion that a spy was among us. The day, after he called at the store of W. F. Herring d; Co., and purchased a dashing Confederate uniform Rigge3 out in this new suit, he represented himself as being e member of the late la mented Stonewall Jackson's staff and pass ed as such. The dashing Major (for such was the style of- his new uniform) next made a hasty trip to West Point, as he said, for the purpose of renewing his acquaintance with some old friends, returning to At lanta the next day. After a 'day or two sojourning with us he was suspected and arrested, and his papers demanded. Pa pers, however, he had not, except pees ports from numerous provost marshals, which he no doubt obtained by lying and impudence. When 'arrested, he voluntarily, and with perfect coolness, gave. his parole to remain twenty-four hours, till he could he identified by telegraph from his em ployers and friends in Richmond. At the end of the time no telegraph had been received ; he gave himself up aprisoner, tr. be held till the _desired information could be received. His boldness, frankness, and cool self .possession Were'well calculated to deceive 'the moat cautious. After being held for some time, and no charges appearing against him, he was discharged and he left the city. Subsequent to his departure dispatches from thoeti from whom he had represent. ed to be his friends in' Richmond, dis claimed all knowledge of him and (thanks to the magnetic telegraph) he was .caught near Knoxvil/e. He had in his possession pockeeinstrument, and is doubtless the. :rascal who rendered the line on the East frennessee and Georgia Railroad such an 'enigma, to its iiperienced operators a few days ago,. and caused the people of this city to suppose the Yankees were making another raid through East Tennessee, Inciting to Riot There is in Detroit, Michigan, a most infathone sheet, called the Advertiser and Tribune, which is laboring to create riot in that city.
