The lateness of the hour at which the fire occurred_ night_ beforA 64, -reridered it impossible for us to get even an-esti mate cf the loss. We learn that Mr.. Rich ardson's loss is about $B,OOO, and that he is insured in the Franklin, of Wheeling, for $2,000, end in the Farmers' 4:anal, of York, Pa., for the same amount. There was a rumor that he was insured at all, and that his loss was total; we are glad to find that such is not the 2 case. The building belonged to the heirs of Mr. Renshaw, and was valued_at $2,000. Mr. Uoffin's loss is estimated at $4,000, of which $2.000 is covered by_ _insurance. Mr. Severance's loss is $5,000, and is-in sured for $2,000, divided equally bet Ween the Western and Pittsburgh. Haigh & were eamaged to the amount of $l,OOO, which is covered by insurance. Among Pittsburgh's most noble and gallant sons, who have so gloriously up. held the banner of their country against the invasion of an enemy, the name of Brigadier General Alexander Hays stands prominent. Brave almost to rashness, possessed of that impetuous courage that brooks no opposition, he has on more than one occasion led his division against vastly superior 'Ambers, routing them, and planting the national colors in the very face of the foe. At one time when in command of the 31 division, 2d corps, (General Hancock's) stationed behind a atone wall, be received a desperate attack from G'ens. Hill and Pickett. Waiting the.proper moment, he charged them, tak ing prisoners an entire brigade, and deal ing out terrible slaughter to the remaining rebels. At another time when his line was wavering under the determined charge of overwhelming numbers, he sprang from his horse, seized a standard, and with the command to his boys to follow him, plant ed it in the very teeth of the foe. Inspir ed by his example, his men rallied, and by a desperate hand to hand conflict, suc ceeded in beating back the foe and saving that part of the field from disaster. The terrible nature of the conflict in which Gen. Hays was engaged is best es tablished by the fact that he lost all the colonels of his old brigade, and out of twenty mounted orderlies, fourteen were killed or wounded. One of his aids, the gallant Lieutenant David Shields (son of Thos. L. Shields, of Smviclsley), had a horse killed under him, and his shoulder- Straps blown off by a shell ; another of his aids, Captain Cortz, of this city, had two horses shot under him ; while the General himself had one charger killed, and anoth er (a very fine horse, presented him by Leet Shields, EN.,) received three bullets in the breast. Gen. Hays, it is well known, was attached to Heintzelman's corps, at Washington, until the invasion by Lee, when he was ordered to march with all possible speed and join the second corps of the Army of the Potomac, under Gen. Hancock. Gen. Hays is at present in coin mend of the whole of the second corps, owing to the temporary disablement of Gen. Han cock. That we shall soon hear from him again, amid the stirring events of the bat tle-field, we doubt not. Pittsburgh may well feel proud of her noble son ; and it is a matter for congratulatio n that nearly all the men and officers sent from our district are earning imperishable laurels on the field of glory.
