Yesterday afternoon the members of the Vigilant Fire Company returned from their visit to Ft. Wayne, and marched down Smithfield, Fifth, Wood, and Third' btreeta to their house, preceded by a band of music. The boys had a spledid time. They were welcomed by the Mayor and Council of Ft. Wayne, and as they were leaving the cars a Salute of thirty-Six guns was fired. The city authorities chartered a steamer, and took them about 12 miles ap the St. Joseph river where they enjoyed a pic Die and a ball. On their return they proceeded to a grove a abort distance from town, where speeches were made by some of the most prominent citizens of Fort. Wayne. At the conclusion of the speeches they were escorted to the pale- dial residence of Judge Hanna , near the ' city, where, after a few soul-stirring aire by the kand, the Judge set oat a magnifi- I Gent collation. They reveled juice cream,' lemonade, and all the etceteras that con stitnte a Asst. Mr. James Irwin, and four others, remained to con- Summate the sale. The boys will soon have another machine, equal in all res pects to the one sold. These re-unions are prolific of much good, and we hope to hear of them often. A Happy Consummation. One of the prisoners captured at Falling Waters was a courier from Stuart to Lee, and had on his per. son dispatches for Lee--not being searched immediately after his capture he destroyed them- .on his way here,, 'Be says the ordi nance train destroyed by Major Foley be longed to McLane's rebel division, and was sent back because they had ammuni tion in abundance and more than they could transport. BALTIMORE, s.—From our special correspondent at Westminster, Md., July 5, 8 A. M. Cannonading began at an early hour this morning, from a direction to the left of where it was heard here on Friday. It did not last long, and was probably Gen- Meade- feeling for the enemy. It has rained all night, and the streams are much swollen, and the roads are getting very muddy. Oar wounded are being shipped by rail to Baltimore, and over three thousand reb els, under escort, have passed to the rear through here. Tere has been ao fighting to day ex• cept h some skirmielting• all along the lines,' The enemy evacuated Gettysburg on Fri day night, and took all their wounded that could be moved en route to Chem bereburg. • They left ; n town about fifteen hundred of their wounded. Friday's fight was the severest of tLe war. The whole army was engaged during the day and fought H I is Longstreet'e and part of Ewell'a Cori.;. They must have lost in the last tour days over 40,000 men. We have a report front the front that the Ri,bels have fallen back to South Moun tain, this side of Chambersburg_._ E{ARRISBrRG, July 5 —Mr. Wm. Mul len who arrived to day from Gettysburg, G uts the number of prisoners taken beneral Meade at thirty thousand. He had the best Betimes of information. Parties arriving to-day from Chambers burg say that some attempt was made by l the rebels to fortify the passes in that part I of South Mountain which lies south oel Chambersburg ana Carlisle and between the two. This is done to prevent pursuit.' It will avail nothing. The forces of Gem Milroy's old command, which were at, Bloody Run, are expected at Chambers burg to-night. Their position will be a central one in the Valley. A large force of troops from Pennsyl vania, New York and New Jersey, is mov ing on their flank. Pheir escape is almost I itneoraiblo. Everything indicates that they are terri bly cut up. They cannot keep the pris oners they have taken from us; one thous and' arrived here to-day, having been pa roled ; -they were sent to Philadelphia; two thousand more have arrived, within Gen. Smith's lines, and fifteen hundred more are expected. These men all understood that their parole is not binding, their cases being covered by General Order No. 209, pub-' liahed on Saturday. Many persons who ref aged, in obedience to the order, to give their paroles, are retained with the Rebel , army. So far as information has been re ceived here, our loss in prisoners was four thousand five hundred. The mountains are filled with Rebel deserters, who are hourly arriving wtthin oar lines. No estimate can be made of their numbers. —lt is very large. Lee, to Davie, says; "That, eo far, my prospects ate not cheerieg. . I can barely seize enough to sustain life, while 4he Yankees have so largely and rapidly con• centrated, and are so harrassing me that I am fearful I shall have to abandon the State, and as well, this present move ment." Other letters were captured, some dep recating this movement North, and state that they never expect to get back alive, and tell their friends that, in case they don't, what to do with their diferetit des criptions of , property, while many assert that they mean to desert at the first favor able opportunity. The following correspondence passed, to day, between Gov. Curtin and Surgeon- General Hammond - lassaisatrao, July 6,--Surgeon-General Hammond, WashingtOn.--Our people over the Stateare exceedingly anxious to render aid and , assistance to the wounded at Harrisburg.
