Inereial Daily Markets sod River Rears SATURDAY MORNING, JUNE 20 CITY AND BEI6BOR11001) ItiTHLILIGENOR Terrible Storm---The Gun Boat Buildings Destroyed --- The Umpqua Badly Damaged-- Three Men Injured. About two o'clock yesterday afternoon, a terrific storm burst in a sudden manner over our city, and in a few minutes the streets were flooded with water. It had been :Meting but a shmt time when a heavy hail itorm eet in, which lasted for at least halt an•hour. The rain lasted for about an hour, after which we ventured out, and the first news we heard was that the Gun boat buildings in South Pittsburgh had been destroyed, and several men killed. Proceedin g to the spot we saw the build ing in ruins. Upon inquiry we obtained the following information : Shortly after the storm set in, the workmen abandoned the buildings—and ran into the workkhops adjoining, all except one gang of riveters who were working in the hull of the Man ayunk. While thus engaged a whirlwind struck the end of the building towards the river, and in a minute it was a wreck. It then struck the building in which the hull of the Umpqua was being laid, and it was totally destroyed. Only the keel and gar board of the Umpqua was laid, and that was so badly bent, and otherwise injured that it will have to be taken to pieces. straightened, and put up again. What is more singular is the fact that in the work sheds adjoining, no wind of con sequence was felt, and boards lying loose on the temporary sheds erected over the horizontal punch and L shears were not even displaced. The fol lowing are the names of persons who were , 1 injured: Jas. Mooney who resides at No. 9 Scott street, was struck in the forehead by something which inflicted a severe wound. His right leg was also badly in jured. He is a single man, about 30 year's of age, and the only support of his mother. A man by the name of Wood ward, who boards at the corner of Sixth and Smithfield streets was slightly injured by being struck on the left shoulder and breast. The shock was so severe and the pain so great that it made him very sick for a while, although he was able to walk home. Jas. E. Metlin was very slightly injured, and will probably be able to go to work again in a day or two. A man whose name we could not ascertain, jamp• ed from the cars that run along the top of 'the building, a distance of about twenty feet from the ground, and was slightly lamed. Some few others received slight bruises, but nothing of any moment. The only wonder is that more were not hurt.— The damage clone the buildings and Umpqua is about $5,000, if any thing it is over rather than under that amount.— The buildings were insured against fire only. Benefit of Miss Annie Eherlie. On Moaday evening next, the 22d inst., this lady, who has labored so assiduously to please the habitues and visiters of the Pittsburgh Theatre, will present her claims for a Benefit. Not relying entirely upon her personal popularity, or the patronage of her immediate friends, she offers a bill replete with attractiveness. She has cho sen the poetical Equestrian drama of Ma zeppa, or the Wild Horse of Tartary, she essaying the two male characters of,"Cas• simer" and the Prince. She has a fine trained horse that she will tide up the fearful cataract, a feat that but few ladies have the courage to attempt. A new sen• cation drama of Virginia, or the Daughter of the Union, will also be played, she sus taining the part of the heroine, supported by the aid of the entire company. Pittsbur,Ther limed at Win chester. Among those who fell at the late battle of Winchester was Lieutenant J. T. Ben- Longh, of the 12th Virginia regiment. ieutenant Bengough learned the printing business in this city, and about the time the war broke out was a compositor in the office of the Gazette, in which paper he had previously served a short term as re porter. Same two years since he removed to Fairmont, where he engaged in the pub lication of a weekly paper known as the National, but not content in his new posi tion, he joined the 12th Virginia regiment, and continued in active service up to the period of his death. The de2eased was about twenty six years of age, and leaves ayoung wife to deplore his loss. His re mains, it is said, will be brought on hero for interment. Hee ti g. McFar land, of Meadville, and Mr. Watkins, o New York, were passing on the road 'be tween Oil City and Franklin, their earri• age was thrown over an etnban'ti- ment when passing an oil team, and Mr. Watson bad 's leg troken, and was considerably bruised. Mr. McFarland was slightly in jured. Mr. Watkins was taken to Frank lin, and at last accounts was doing well. Destructive Flee. Yesterday afternoon, during the hail storm, a barn on the dairy farm of W. Means, in Pitt township, was struck by lightning, and was, with a lot of farming utensils, harness, &c , entirely-destroyed. Clair street yesterday afternoqp,,and further said that`he could whip any Amer man on the street. An American who thought differently pitched into the Bull(y), when Alderman Donaldson came up and parted the belligerents, and taking the Englishman by the shoulder told him that he had better go home. And - now, Messrs. Editors, I don't know what your opinion in regard to the matter would, be, but that the fellow should have been arrested and made to suffer severely, especially at such a time as this, is the opinion of at least one American citizen born in Allegheny Valley Railroad. A corps of engineers are.now survey. ing the the route for the Allegheny Val. ley Railroad fromKittanning to the mouth of the Mahoning. Another company was chartered to build it to Franklin or Oil Creek. Whether it will be laid out along the Allegheny river or across Clarion county by Canonsburg will not be linown until the engineers make their report. "Shouting the Battle Cry of Freedom." Yesterday the appearance of things in the streets was truly warlike, Squads of men were arriving from all parts of the country, and were marching and counter marching through the streets. The mar tial music of the fife and drum was to be heard in all directions. Flags were flying, 1 banners waving, men shcuting, orders given, and the heavy tramp of men as so somebody would be hurt if they did not steer clear of this vicinity. Ilirni!lnghom Soldiers. Ninety-nine men, in the employ of Messrs. McKnight & Bro., in their iron works at Birmingham, left for Came Howe yesterday afternoon, in charge of Captain Bishop • One hundred more from the same works will be ready to day. Theatre. • Last night the Theatre was crowded to pay Ettie Henderson a merited compliment on the occasion of her benefit. Among the number present we noticed Capt. Jason Hotchkiss, with fifty of his brave compan ions in arms. A very large proportion of the audience were ladies. To-night is the last appearance of Ettie Henderson, and the bill is worthy of attention. The beautiful play of the Gipsey Girl will be repeated, together with Kathleer Slavourneen, in at! seven acts. We doubt not but the the house will be crowded. real National Circus. This exhibition under the guidance of Mrs. C. Warner, formerly Mrs. Dan. Rice, is destined to cPeate a furore in this city o r h., its arrival. The press everywhere speak in most eulogistic terms of the en• tertainments, pronouncing them unex ceptionable and well worthy of the patron • age of a moral and refined community. The advance agents have a carte blanche for advertising, and they do it most ex tensively. i fhursday the 25th of June, the "model show" will be at Meadville. The management has issued a cautionary bill to the citizens of that place that we recommend them to read. Opposition ex hibitions have no license to enter the lists against the National. Shade Trees Rained. During the severe hail storm of yester- day a great number of shade trees were either partially or completely ruined. In some places they were stripped of their foliage, in others perfectly denuded of leaves and branches, and in others torn up by the roots, and completeily.rnined. We await with considerable anxiety the news of the result of this storm in the conntr An Omission. In noticing those who have acted so promptly in furnishing men to erect forti kations for the protection of the city, we neglected to mention Messrs. Anderson Jr Phillips, of the Monongahela Foundry. They were among the first to furnish their entire force, and well they have labored in the glorious task assigned them. Recruiting. We are informed by Cayt. Hays, of the Provost Guard, that recruiting at the Girard House is going on lively, and that every day some are sent off to join the regiments in which they have enlisted. Fraf t. Great fears are entertained that the hail storm of yesterday will prove ruinous to the young fruit. GODEY'S LADY'S Boos., for July, has been placed on our desk by Mr. H. We have• to record this evening another unjustifiable outrage committed by a Federal gunboat within the predcribed limits of our shores. On Saturday last the Steamer Margaret and Jessie, Capt. Wilson, from Charles. ton for this port, was fallen in with by the Federal gunboat Rhode Island off Abaco, and chased until she arrived close to the shore of James Point, Eleuthera. There would have been no legal cause of com• plaint had the pursuit and firing ceased as soon as the Margaret and Jessie approach. ed within the distance of three miles from the land; but as she neared the coast, and was only two hundred and fifty yards off—that is, between the reef and the 'land—the unboat, which was not more than from g a quarterto a halfmile distant, commenced pouring in broadside after broadside, varying the perform ance with shot, grape and shell, not only to the imminent danger of all on board— and there were ladies among the passen gers—but to the serious alarm of the in habitants of the island, who suddenly found themselves subjected to a sharp and decisive bombardment. The missiles fired from the Rhode Island ploughed up the earth in various directions, and came in close proximity to, it not actually passing, through dwellings, and driving people t o I seek refuge behind rocks and other pro jections. This was kept up for miles, anti. at length the Morgaret and Jessie received a shot through her boiler and another through her bows, which forced her to take the beach, then only fifty yards die taut. We understand that one of the fire men was injured, and if a fatal result , should ensue it will assuredly be a case of aggravated murder. Such are the plain facts of this ferocious outrage. No amount of prevarication will enable the officers of the Rhode Island to I prove that the offense was committed be yond the territorial limits of this colony. There are too many disinterested witnesses to the transaction, whose testimony will outweigh any combination to pervert the truth. When the same Vessel fired into the steamer Sirius, a few weeks ago, there were no spectators on shore to determine,' the distance, and the assertion of the com• mender that he was five miles off was re ceived as conclusive. It is high time in deed that the Home Government should act energetically with respect to these aggressions. Certainly the circumstances connected with the attack on the Margaret and Jessie and on Eleuthera are so flagrant that they cannot well be overlooked. And whilst no doubt reparation will be expect ed and made, yet the intimation should be conveyed also that a repetition of such outrages will not be tolerated. ie American War a Benefit to Australia. The eleventh annual ordinary general meeting of the proprietors of the London chartered Bank of Australia was held yes terday at the London tavern, Mr. W. F. DeSalis in the chair. The chairman, in the course of his speech, said:—Mr. Bramwell spo'(e in very satisfactory terms of the present po sition of the bank and its future prospects. As regarded the general position of the Australian colonies, upon whose prosper ity that business was based, it was very gratifying to reflect that during the past year their progress in material wealth and prosperity had been in no way checked. Slightly affected it might have been by the struggk now going on in America, which had prejudicially affected the whole of Elrope, yet by it the Australian colonies were in some measure benefitted. It had induced emigratio n to Australia, and it was also a fact that the productive powers of these colonies had been stimulated, and they produced now articles to which, but for the war, they would not have turned their attention for years. Formerly five sixths of the tobacco consumed in Aus tralia came from Virginia ; but now large quantities of land were under tobacco cul tivation : tobacco factories had also been established, and produced so good an ar• ticle that it was believed that after the war the c:loniese would be ddent of America so tar as this commodity was concerned. Cotton was also now culti vated to some extent in Australia, especi• ally in Queensland, and this was due wholly to the war.--London News. June tith. Washington's Opinion in Regard to Soldiers. • n writing to the President of Congress Washington makes the following remarks, wkich should be remembered by our peo ple at this time. Something is due to the man who puts his life in your hands— hazards his health and forsakes the sweets of home and his domestic enjoyments. My opinion is that a good bounty should be offered, added by the proffer of at least 100 to 150 acres of land and a suit of clothes and a blanket to a non commis sioned officer and soldier. However high the man's pay may appear, it is barely sufficient, in the present scarcity and dear nese of all kinds of goods, to keep them in clothes, much less to afford support to their families." A Land Joke. Admiral Porter reports in his dispatch that Grant could take Vicksburg by assault with ten thousand men. The rebel army in Vicksburg does not seem to estimate the capacity of Porter's squadron so gen erously. A correspondent relates that on the 30th, when Pemberton sent a flag of truce to propose an- armistice of two or three hours for burying the dead, and when it was objected that owing to the length of our lines it would be impossible to notify the whole force within that time, especially the gunboats, the rebel officers replied that we might leave out the gun boats, as they never killed a man of theirs and they rather preferred to have the g un . boats go on burning ammunition.
