HEII TRIPO DAI:1 DAILY POST. Death of General Sherman. We regret to chronicle the Untimely death of General T. W. Sherman, at New Orleans. He led the desperate assault upon the rebel works at Port Hudson, and was severely wounded in the leg.— Owing to the heat of the weather, and the peculiar nature of the wound, the sur geons hesitated to amputate at onqe, fear ing lest death should ensue. General Sherman, was, therefore, removed to New Ouleansi :where the operation was per formed, but the intense suffering caused by the wound brought on a prostration which rendered amputation fatal, and he soon 'sank under it. THuit perished, in , the service of the republic, one of the bravest, most scientific and thoroughly able soldiers our -country has. produced. Before the breaking out of the War, he commanded a battery of artillery, and, devoted himself so entirely to it, that his battery was considered the perfection of; the United States artillery ;service. He and his battery served with distinction at the first great battle of Bull Run. Su b3e quently he was appointed a Brigadier tieneral, and placed in commend bf the military arm of the celebrated Port Royal ! expedition. Following up the brilliant achievements of the navy in those Waters, he early secured possession of nearly all the coast and islands now held bY us in that section, and had inaugurated the op erations which resulted subsequently in the capture of Fort Pulaski. But the country did not appreciate prop erly his laborious industry and unobtiusive worth, and therefore he was removed, to satisfy what appeared to be public eenti iment. He afterwards commanded di vi sions, and a corps, of the armies of the westand south under Grant and Banks, and had seen a large' amount of severe fighting.' He commanded at New Orleans after the arrival of Banks, and followed up most.effectively the repressive -system of General Butler. When Banks, return ing from his victorious expedition through theleche - country, wished to commence the Beige of Port Hodson, without waiting' forthe transfer of his main - army, he sent Sherman up the river to take command of the troops at Baton Rouge, and gather up detachments from other quarters. Most promptly did he fulfill all his orders, cut-_ ting the enemy's communizations, des troying railways and bridges; and defeat- 1 ing the rebel army and driving it into the works at Port Hudson.. Upon the arrival of Banks and his main army, the grand as4ault was'ordered, and was led by Sher man, with that desperate valor which has Characterized all our soldiers at the south west. Sherinan had the post of -honor. He led his black troops np agabist the centre of the enemy's ; Main works, and in three dreadful charges attempted:to obtain and hold a footing. It was in this ashau! t he received the fatal - Wound. Banks had not in his artily an abler or more scientific soldier than. Sherman, and we may well doubt if there he any there equal to him —Phil. North American. - "he Case of.Rear,Admiral 8: 19' Dupont. relit Editor :of 'the, rt - brtd - I am sure yon would not knowingly do an injustice to etymon fighting in his coun try's cause, and I therefore:crave your in , ' dulgence in behalf of an officer who has well deserved of the republic. When the secrets of history are no longer hidden flout the public, it will be found that Rear-Admiral Dupont • has been re• lieved from his present command not, es some surmised, in censequenc l e of any in efficienoy, but in accordance WO own - emphatic .i.equest. Admiral Foote is therefore. a fit subject for'commisseration--certainly not• Admiral Dupont. • • If an officer should be judged by the services rendered to his counky, there will be little difficulty in deciding between Dupont and Hunter. Daring the exis enee of this war the former has made a reputation, which:will live :forever in Mel tory—by that splendid eliptical laaheayg4 which gives Ilan* reciting idtiSeuttiiectrO line. :Fartherinore, be has deidetfeallY, blocked up many - hundred miles of coast,; with the ,sing,le exception of Charleston— a harbor which`- not possible' to without "occupying and possessing" the! forts within, it. I won't:l,BEl,y, in conclusion, that Dupont's retirement from his command will cause much sorrow to every one of his 'subordi nates, IS there anybody, atolitionist or otherwise, who dares assert that General Hunter's removal would pot be hailed with satisfaction by every patriotic mind in the country 7 I am sir, yours respectfully, JUSTITIA New York, Jane 8, 188.3 -The liffisiftsiippilliverhOperations of Gene. Grant ancl`Banka. We have news from Gen, Banks' army at . Port Hudson via New Orleans, up to the Ist inst., and from Gen. Grant's army at Vicksburg up to the 3d. At each of the two scenes of action at these respective datiii, things were in a very similar state. Gen. Grant's army was still investing Vicksburg, with his right and left wings resting on the Mississippi River ; Gen. %aka' army was investing Port Hudson, 228 Miles below Vicksburg, with the right and left wings of his, Army resting on the river. Grant had made no assault in force the. Vicksburg defences since the attack of the 22d, which was unsuc cessful; and Banks had made no assault . Mpon the Port Hudsonworks since the attempt of the 27th, which also was un successful. All thatlfas been done at' Vicksburg for the last eighteen days has' been'Ao'keep the rebel • garrison awake by j I an,activer.fire from the -'seige guns in the I rear and the gunboats' in front , and pre cisely the same course has been pursued at Port Hudson for a fortnight past. The detest advices from 'Vicksburg indicate that it is Grant's plan to pursue the Beige steadily and mainly by engineering oper ations, with au expectation that the gar rison must soon succumb from hunger ; and our New Orleans letters of this morn ing set forth that Banks intends pursuing a similar plan, with like hopes. In one important point, however, there is a dif ference :—while we hear much about the great rebel army that Johnston is gather ing in the rear of Goa. Grant, w e hear nothing whatever of any rebel furce in Get. Banks' rear. This is fortunate for Gen. Banks, for his army is very much smaller than that of Gen. Grant, and is not so favorably posted to resist an attack in the rear. It is fortunate for both of these excellent commanders that they have first-class naval officers terco- operate with them. Admiral Farragut has been as naifOrmlYsticoessful and brilliarrt in all his naval operations as Banks has been in his land operations in Louisiana ; and Admiral Porter's operations have only been less glorious :hen those of Gen. Grant because they have been so very much smaller in their sweep and aim.— Gen. Banes and Gen. Grant communicate with each other by means of couriers along the Louisiana bank of the river. There has been a certain notable parallel between the present campaigns of (lens. Grant arid• Banks ever since they opened. About the same time in April they began to move their respective armies, the one from Milliken's Bend and the other from the Teche,—each intending to reach his point of attack from a new direction, and after a long march. Gen. Grant had no I sooner crossed the Mississippi than fight ing began; and after fire great and vie tonons battlea r he invested Vicksburg on 1 1 the Idth of' May. Gen. Banks likewise had to fight his way up through Louisiana to Alexandria, and he had half a dozen victorious engagements with the rebels.— After the last of Grant's battles, he pro eeedqd directly to the investment of Vicks burgh, which be effected' on the 18th ult. After Gen. Banks had reached Louisiana, be had to carry his troops down the Red River ; but big investment of Port Hudson was effeCted, we jaidge, rby the 23d. Gen.l Ranks' battle of the Plains, in the rear of I Port Hudson may-stand' as the parallel of ' Gen. Grant's battle of Black - River Bridge, on the 17th, as on both - of these engage amnia depehded the effecting of the res . - pective, investments. Both armies, as we have already said, have made one general assault on the enemy's works—Gen. Grant four days after investment, on the 22d, and'Oen. Banks also about four days After investment ; on the 27th. Both of th 3 armies reached their points of destina tion fleshed with victory And both are now is like manner persistently and hero ically persning their seige work. We trust that the arms of both will ere long be 'crowned with complete victory,—N. }- Times. arges. Against the New York Police COminisaioners. They are again all right and we arc pleased to record the same. Besides it will no doubt give us a slight rise of water. Our city is a =cone of excitement front one end to the oth er. Our peop'e have at last become aroused in regard to having our city fortified. That the reb els have for a long time meditated a raid in Ibis direction we have no doubt, and how to accom plish that object is all that has prevented them from attempting to carry out thei'r intentions. Pittsburgh is at this time and has always been during the war one of the most valuable eitieg to the l.ition cause there iv, and the rebels are per fectly aware of this fact.
