FRIDAY MORNING, MAY 22, pliiiMaa3MillipirninaM . Weekly Post. Our weekly is now ready and can be had this_monitng at the counter , with, or witlaottewrappers. In addition to the usual amount of editorial, local, commer cial, telegraph, and miscellaneous news matter, it contains the speech of Hon. John J. Crittenden, a speech that should be read attentively by every ardent lover of his country; an article.on the national banking law; a communication from "Jus tice" in reation to a proposed compro• mise with the holders of Allegheny Coun ty bonds : a letter from Hon. Reverdy Johnson, and much other interesting and valuable matter. The weekly is printed on handsome white paper, with clear type, and the present number alone, contains some information of more value than a year's subscription amounts to. Rieltelleu Substantiated. The great cardinal once said that the "pen is mightier than the sword." A. D. JACKSON, MM., WEDNESDAY NICBT May 6th, 1863. Yon see we got to Vicksburg a little ahead of Grant ! Junius Brown, Colburn and myself, started from Milliken's Bend, Sunday night, on a tug and two barges, of provis ions and forage, to run the blockade, as the shortest, easiest, if not the safest way to get to Grant's army. The batteries at Vicksburg were too many for us. After we had been hit about a dozen times, a Shell exploded our boiler, setthe hay bales on fire, and put a short stop to our expedition. We were picked up on hay bales in the river at about 2 o'clock in the morning, after swimming and floundering about for half an hour. I saved all my clothing. Junius Brown and Colburn came in in the Georgia costume. All our baggage was barned. Two oor fellows were badl scalded, two wounded by shells, and probably three or four drowned. We are now en route for Selma, under guard, and will probably be sent to Rich mond. We have been fortunate enough from the moment we fell into the Coated eraia bands ' in being treated with great kindoes.4 and courtesy, and having our situation =tie unusually pleasant fur that of prisoners. I write this hasty note in the Appeal office which we are allowed to visit OD parole. Masers. Dambla and McClana han are here, and with other mernbare of the press have bean very kind in their at tentions. Yours, A. D. RICHARDSON Prof. Watnelink's Concert. It is well known now to all of our citi -2808 that to night has been set apart by the pupils of Professor Warnelink to give concert, but the whereabouts of the con cert has bten so variously stated as to lease some in doubt. We would inform every one and their fri-tnds that it comes of at Masonic Hall. In connexion with this concert, there is one attraction of it self worth double the price of admission. Miss Sue Beck, a musical prodigy, only about nine years of age will be present, soul give au exhibition of her powers as a vocalist. Her voice is soprano, very pow erful, very clear, with a perfectly Jiainet utterance, and her entire performan'ne is characterised with the precision cf an experienced cantatrice. Mr. Warnelink's success as teacher has been placed beyond all - peradventure, and the number of his scholars would war• sant him in employing an assist ant, were it not that he chooses to devote his entire attention to them him self, both by night and by day, rather than expose himself and them to the chances of a person incompetent to perform the duties he deems necessary to insure a finished musical education. Like most educated Germans his musical education is of the most complete order, and he wishes his scholars to obtain the same effi ciency. Let the Hall be crowded to nip' Drina, Medicines, the. It gives us pleasure to call particular attention to the advertisemeht of Mr. Joritph B. Milliken, to be found in another column. It will be seen by the adver tisement that Mr. Milliken is successor to James P. Fleming, Esq., one of the oldest and most reliable drug men in our county. Mr. F. commenced business at the present stand over twelve years ago, at first in a small way, but gradually increasing nn til he required the use of a building one hundred feet in depth, and as his business increased, from time to time he made ad ditions until the house reached its present dimensions, and his trade had made itself nearly equal to any other house in Alle gheny county. In disposing of his business to Mr. Milliken he has guaranteed to the public a successor in whom they can have flits most implicit confidence and one who ,Will eonduct matters upon the same liberal principles as did his predecessor. Mr. Millifren's facilities for buying places him in a position to compete favorably with any other house in the two cities. The followirg remarks made by the Har risburg Union are applicable to our city at the present time. Nothing can be more disgusting than the 'anguage of a habitual swearer, and he who by making use of mash language, imagines that he adds dig city to his cloth, or iorce to his arguments is mistaken. In the crowded state of our streets at present, the ear of the passer by is often offended by coarse and indelicate Isagaage, which is indulgect ingegardlessal the proximity of women and children.— This may not be done intentionally; bat it is done nevertheless. Of coarse the im propriety of such thoughtless conduct is too palpable taneed exposition or elabm a -Mon. Coarse jest or profanity is illy suited to the ear of womanhood and child ren, and from all ribaldry their deer feel ings recoil instinctively, by the very law of their nature, As a nation, we have a reputation for gallantry and tenderness of which we may well be proud, and it be hooves as to see that we do not lapse in the least degree from our high position in this respect. Whitsuntide. Next Sunday, the 24th,the seventh Sun• day or forty-ninth day after Easter is Whit sunday. The festival has its origin with the Jews, who observed it throughout their history as the day upon which Moses received the law upon Mount Sinai. The diffusion of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles,.es recorded in Acts ii, occurred on this day, which was known among them as the day of Pentecost, and hence its observance has been continued by Christ'ans. Whitmonday, which occurs on the 25th, is celebrated as a holiday and festival in some parts of the country, the people abandoning themselves to hilarity and merriment. In other places, Whit monday is celebrated with eclat. It would he well if its observance ware universal. It•s too long between holidays in this country. The eleventh entertainment of the Fourth Ward Elocution Class for the ben efit of the Subsistence Committee came off last night at Masonic Hall, and was what it professed to be, a decided entertainment. We at first thought that we would notice some particular ones who excelled, bat we found it a difficult task. All were so excellent that any comparisons would be invidious. We are sure that the parents of the young gentlemen must have been well pleased with the man ner in which they acquitted them selves, and their proficiency must have been a source of gratification to their teach• er, Mr. Newell, who has labored faithfully to render them good elocutionists. We are sure that we can speak of the gentle men who compose the quartette, without detracting from the merits of the class. They sung a number of pieces with such good effect, and in so excellent a manner that the audience testified their gratifica tion in the most boisterous applause. They have a correct musical taste, and talent to execute it in a proper manner. We should be gratified to listen to them again. rennsylvanta lusurance Com Zany.
