It is strange that with all time the American' womenbestow upon dress, so few know how to prepare a simple toilet with taste. To be well 'dressed means, with-most, to".wear rich niaterial, maiU Op in gorgeoes style, with all the usual seem ' ories of lace and jewelry, to add to the magnificence of the general effect. Nev er was greater mistake. To be well dress ed is only to have attire suited to time, place and circumstances, made in a be coming manner. This attire may be a shilling calico or a rich silk, and yet, in either, if it he adapted to the conditions we have mentioned, a woman may by said to be well dressed. Where household duties have to be performed, and the care of children devolves paitly upon the "mitt tress of the house, a neat dress, fitted foacefully to the figure, is much r morning wear than the faded remains; of a more pretentious costume. Tho• reap, contains, in the chapter entitled "Brute Neighbors," the following account of an ant fight : , "One day when I went to my wood pile, I observed two ants, one red, the other much larger, nearly half as inch long and black, fiercely contending with each other. • Having once got hold they never let go, but struggled and rolled on the chips in cessantly. Looking further, I was en:- prised to find the chip's 'covered with such combatants, that it was not a duellum beta, bellum —a war between two races of ants, the red always pitted against the black, and frequentlitwo reds to one black.— I The legions of these myrmidons covered all the hills and vales in my wood -yard, and the ground was already strewn with the dead and dying. "On every side they were engaged in deadly combat, yet without any noise that I could hear, and fought so resolutely. I watched a couple that were fast locked in - one another's embraces in a little sunny valley amid the chips, now at noon day, prepared to fight until the sun were down or life went out. The smaller champi on had fasened like a vice to his adversary's front, and: - through all the,. tumbling that field, -never for an instant, ceased to gnaw at one of the black one's feelers near the root, having already caused the other to go by the board ; while the stronger black one dashed him from side to side, and, I saw on looking nearer, had already divested , him. -of several of his. inficettirtirartinif - Gni& Neither niani fested the least disposition to retreat. In the meanwhile there came along -a single red ant on the Eillside of this valley, evi dently full of excitement; who either had dispatched his foe, or had not yet taken I part in the battle—probably the latter, for he had lost none of his limbs. He saw' the unequal contest from afar—for the blacks were nearly twice the size of the rids—he drew near with rapid pace till -be-stood on his guard within half an inch of the combatants; then, watching his opportunity, he- sprang upon the black warrior and commenced his the near the right fore leg, leaving the foe to selectltatong•his own members, and so there were three united for life, as if a new kind of attraction had been invented, which put all other locks:and.. cements. to sharile. took up the chip on whieh the three have particularly described were strug• gling, carried it into my house and placed it under a tumbler on my window -sill in order to see the issue. Holding a mioro scope to the first mentioned red ant, I saw that, though he was assiduously gnawing at the near fore leg, having severed his revs inifig . fceder, his own breast was all tarn' away, exposing what vitals he had there to the jaws of the black warrior, whose breast-plate was apparently too think for him to pierce, and the dark car buticles of the sufferers eyes shone with ferocity such as war only could excite. They struggled half an hour longer under the tumbles., when I looked again the black soldier had severed the heads of his foes'from their bodies, hed the still living heads were hanging on either side of him like ghastly trophies at his .-saddle bow, apparently as firmly fastened as ever, and he was endeavoring with feeble struggles, being without feelers,. and with only the remnant of wounds d d i vesw not how many other to. himself of them, which at length, after as:lhour more, .Ite succeeded. I raised the glass and he = went off over the window sill in that orip pled condition. Whether he. finally sur vived that combat, and spent the the re mainder of his days in some Hotel des Invalids.; I do not htiow, but I thought that his industry would not be worth much there. after, .never leafted - which 'p a rty was `victorious, the the cause of the war; but I felt for, rest of that day as ifl had had my feelings excited and harrowed by wit nessing, the ,struggle, the !ferocity and l earsutge. of a human battle 'before my door. .NEW 13ISCOVVAIV- To Strengthen and Improve the Sight, THE Opoisk. ,PRBBLS, Russian . PITTSBURGHPIi3ODUG - i MAR KET Itemarks—The weather continues to im prove, and the prospect at present favors pleasent Spring weather. Oar rivers are in fair navigable order for the largest class of boats. All the coal that is ready will leave dating the present it e. A few tow-boats have already left, whilst others are making ready. The prospect for furnishing the Western and Southern cities with an ample sup-, ply of coal is certainly flattering. "Uncle Samuel" will also be supplied w;th a few hundred thousand bushels; besides. we shallifon hear of the fall of Vicksburgh, as Grant has commenced operations at that city, Natchez and New Orleans will have to be furnished, which will take an extra supply ; the prospect for selling a large amount of coal is certainly flattering. Our tow-boats have had a busy time, for sometime past, and have no doubt mado a good thing out of it. Flour—we have noth ing new to note in regard to ,Lis article. Holders do not seem willing to meet the vlews of parches ere. hence we have but fess operations to notioo, and those more of a retail than a wholesale char acter. In the East and West we notice a dull mar ket:there being no export demand, the receipts by wagon aro in the increase. Potatoes—the market is over-stocked; prices have further de clined, infect, the season'is approaching the close. The decline in prices however will inorease the sales. Butter—The market was quiet and limo- Eve, the sales being limited to small lots. prices evident tends downward. Cheese—market stea dy, with a good demand; prices have undergone no change. Groceries--The market was mcderrte ly active, with a good business doing in lots to meet the wants of the home trade. The supply in first hands is fair. Bacon—We continue to no_ tice a firm market, both for local purposes and to fill Government orders. The supply is rapidly disappearing. Flour—The market during the week has Pre sented no change worthy of notice. The receipts were light and sales likewise. The principal re ceipts wore wagon flour, which sold at a variety of prices, according to quality. Sales 75 bbls Ex tra, $646 25; 50 'Skis Extra Family, $6 75157, Some choice sold at $7 50. Graln— market continues dull in all its various departments, the demand being entirely local. Wheat, we noto small sales of red at $lBO, and white at $1 35©1 40. Oats, the market is dell and unsettled, prices nominal. -CM, the market contains more sellers than buyers; it looks as if there would have to be a concession before sales could be effected; a lot of 600 bush was disposed of at 80(48.2o.
