Steele's hyedition down Deer Cr• sour OF FETIGUSON'S G V EAR Et .t.sr VALUABLE SPOILS SECITRED • A correspondent of the New York Times, writing from Greenville, Miss., gives the details of Gen. Steele's late expedition down Deer Creek. The expedition left Greenville on the tith inst. It consisted of two light batter ies, two companies of cavalry and 3,500 infantry. Gen. Steele's instructions were, in substance, to destroy or bring off every thing which might aid the rebels, leaving, borrever, sufficient for the use of the in ittalutautn;‘ and in case of tectriegroes, to . • . allow them to act their pleasure as to leaiiitg. When the party landed Fergu• son g s brigade'were in sight and kept near during the whole progress of the expedi. tion, bat rarely near enough to get within reach of danger. If a man fell out of the ranks to do a little private stealing on his own account, and was separated a mile from the main body, he was sure to be picked up by the prowling guerrillas in this manner probably not less than a hundred men were lost during, the march. The national forces continued ilOwn I Deer Creek a distance ofnbotit_fifty miles, and then, considering that his small forges might be endangered from the rear, Gen. Steele . returned, having occupied _ Agga cis YS i n V in A "45),YinettlkOriti ha-Tai; minus of their downward march was at the plantation of a Dr. Thomas, and here, for the first time, the rebel Ferguson attempt ed to make a stand The timber below the plantation extends to Deer Creek, and in the edge of this the rebel forces were drawn np inlitte of battle: The approach to their position is across the plantation of Dr. Thomas, and upon this Gen. Steele disposed his forces for battle. Mantnr's brigade and Hoffman 's battery were thrown out on. the right; Wood's brigade and Latidgrabber's batteryort the left, 'and - in thisshap_a the national forces mov ed on the:Febel POsitioe. U_Port rankling within four or five hun• Bred yards of the timber, Landgrabber nn- limbered his battery, and opened a fire upon the enemy, so rapid and well direet- ed that in - the course ofao boor the rebels found it unendurable, and tied, leaving us a bloodless and unexpensive victory. The amout of damage done in the rebel , region through which our troops passed will, at a low estimate, reach three mil lions of dollars. They brought in with them 00 mules, 100 horses, 84 yoke of oxen, 400 head of beef cattle, 40 wagons, 4,000 pounds of bacon, 70,1,00 pounds of sugar, =1,500 gallons of molasses, and about 1,000 slaves. They destroyed abouttwenty cotton 'gins, nearly the same number of corn-mills, 500 hogs, 100 torts of fodder, and 700,000 bushels of corn. The - inhabitants along the route were nearly - borne, and, of course, very much frightened at the approach of our troops. .Among all they found but one plantation belonging to. Union men, and they had gone North soon after the break ing out of the war. Some of the balance were not virulent Secessionists, and con fessed that in the beginning they had op posed disunion, but along with thousands of others had been forced to afford a nom inal if,not an active consent to the move ment. Ferguson, is preceding oar troops, set fire.to all the cotton, it was thought Advis able by the stragglers t) make a complete operation by destroying the gins. The inhabitants along the route grumbled con siderably-; both sides, they, said, averred that the object of their coming was to pro • teat peaceable citizens, and yet, between tween the two, they found themselves ,re duced to poverty. In coining back the people along the route were notified that we claim posses- Mon of the Mississippi to Vicksburg, and that in case any more passenger boats are fired upbn iota the entire country which the Union forces had passed- would - be reduced to des 'it. They all: professed' desire to - laie"this ir regular system of warfare stopped, stated - they had freqUently protested against it, and would, if possible, prevent its recur rence.. In coming back Ferguson followed our forces, picking up stragglers, occasionally Malting fidasb upon the rear guard, bat very generally keeping a 'respectful dis tante. In Crossing front Deer Creek to Black Bayou,.a small trap was set for the rebels i into Which they fell to their sor row. Alßert Edward, heir apparent to the throne of Great Britain, contrasts very strikingly, in some respects, with the nuptials 'of an earlier 'Prince of Wale.s—Predericlr—(ttfterwards the father of George the III.) who was married to Princess Augusta of Saxe Gotha, is the year 1226., Thci reader will find in Sams'book_of Court Ainecdotes a very full and minute description of all the ceremonies of the wedding, which` appears to have been scarcely less sumptuous, and More "gracious," than the recFint pageant in honor of Albert and Alexandra. Pa tricians, as well as• plebiane, yield to Fashion ; and the mutable goddess had a code of manners a century and a quarter ago very different from the • rules which she dictates for royalty in the year of grace 18ei. The arrival a 4 reception of Augusta are described at great length in the chronicle to Which we haye alluded. We quote a passage .; Her Highness arrived in the William and Maryyaaht, at Greenwich, on Sunday, April nif, 1835, and`, landing at the hos- pital, was conducted in one of his Majes ty's coaches to the Queen's house, in the Park, amidst the., Ewell/mations of thous ands of sp'ectator's. /Ter - Highness seemed highly delighted with the joy of the peo ple expressed at her arrival, and had the condecension to show herself, for some length of time, from the gallery to .cards the Park. "The Prince of Wales came to pay her a visit ; and their Majesties, the Duke and Princesses sent their compliments. On Monday the Prince of Wales dined with her Highness at Greenwich, in one of the rooms towards the Park, the windows be- 1 ing thrown open to oblige the curiosity of the people. Their Highnesses afterwards supped in public. On Tuesday, the 27th, her highness came in his Majesty's coach from Greenwich to Lambeth, and was bronght in the Queen's chair from Whitehall to St. James, where was a nu merous court beyond expression. The Prince of Wales received her at the garden door ; and, upon her sinking on her knee to kiss his hand, he affectionately raised her up and twice saluted her." After an exceedingly minute and formal account of the ceremony in the church, and of the dresses and oraments worn by every body present, the writer accompanie the royal party back to th'is - palace, and continent; his narrative '"At half an hour after - ten, their Majei ties eat down to supper, the Prince and kakethaitty itadkaur--fefeib-dase-s" Queen's left. Their Majesties retiring to the apartmentS of the Prince of Wales, the bride was conducted to her bed-cham ber, and the bridegroom to his dress ing-room, where the Duke undressed him. The bride was undressed by the Princeses. His Majesty came into the room, and the Prince following soon after,in a night gown and cap of the finest lace, the quality were admitted to see the bridegroom, sitting up in bed, surrounded by the royal family." A e it seems to be high time for specta tors to retire, we conclude our article by an extract from a letter from Horace Walpole, which impeaches, by implication, the eulogies which were pronounced on the beauty of the bride :• "f believe the Princess will have more beauties bestowed on her by poets than even a painter would afford her. They will cook up a new Pandoru, and in the bottom of the box inclose Hope—that all 1 they have said is true.'!—..V. I'. Arvits. Cure for Neuralgia. A friend who has long been afflicted with this painful disease, and who has re sorted to every remedy suggested by the most skillful medical practitioners, with. out finding relief, informs us that he has finally diticovered a sovereign cure for this terrible malady. Ile says it is simple, bat certain. It consists of a mixture of lend and gunpowder, in the following pro portions, viz: Pour tea spoonfulls of gun powder of best quality and one ounce of lead, The latter, for the purpose of hav ing it in a more convenient form to take, should be made into the form of a bolus. The following directions should be strict ly adhered to, for the purpose of insuring a certain cure! Put the powder into a pititol, the barrel of which should be about twelve inches long, and the bore of sufficient size to admit the bolas without a patch. Then - drop in the bolus, rani it well home. Cap .the pistol. Take off your coat. and vest ! cut a slit . in your shirt about two inches long, eat below the left nipple. After coCking the pistol, place' the muzzle directly against the cuticle about in the centre of the slit made in the under garment ; then careful ly placing the forefinger of the right hand on a small piece of iron usually to be found under the barrel of the pistol, give a sudden pull.' This, our friend says, he is convinced is the only wire cure for this d—d disease - - The cure may be certain, but we think it worse than the disease. Victor Hugo on Poland.
