'1(::.r.:0$1.1,, The Cause of the War yr i 3 pablishthe following dignified ,add able 4 consmeitary k ffom : •- 4 t he -FlittsbUrgh Catholici — - '-- - r : - - - f 'in his proclamation appointing a. day of fist and humilintion,_ the President dis tinctly acknowledges that the present war and s its attendant calamities are a punish ment inflicted on the country by Divine justice. This is the first time, we believe, that such, an admission has been made in any official document concerning - the War, and we cannot but, desire "that the spirit which prompted it may seize the minds of the people, and iinpreas on them the ne• cessity of, humiliation and amendment to appeasliO4id's wrath, and obtain a cam don of the scourges by which we Kra in flicted; Dor sins, indeed, as a people, have -been many- and great ; and, what is waise, inatead of shame and repentance, we-have too often found in them the mo tive, for.pride and vain glory. , We know that many persons place sla very as the first among the.ains fot which God la• panishing,ns. Many religions hod iedlitiva: denounced it as such, and have insisted - ,that'our present calamities 'are a punishment of lit, principally, if not of it alone. • This, we brelieve, on reflection, must be rejected as false. In the first place; the nation, as a nation, is not re sponsible for slavery, since its Constitu ttone powers.gave it no right to interfere in any way with that institution in the states wherein it existed. It was always admitted to be a State institution, the blame or praise of which could not be laid to the Government of the United States. The Northern States cannot be held re sponsible for it, for those in which it once existed have abolished it, whilst others have been f3:tunete enough not to have had to deal with so difficult a problem at all." Nor do we think that the Southern States of the present day are to blame for the existence of slavery. the _xmasi.* alive.owsisra did uovelltdattek-themSteran iffisylciettil it left to them as a legacy by their' forefathers ; this very fact imposed obligations on them which they could not avoid ; and no one who examines the qneation fairly, can hold them r‘sponaible for- the feet that slavery exists. Many slave-owners have been guilty of great in justice to their slaves; the 'laws and cus toms which prevented the Christian doc trine of marriage being observed by the negroes deserve lusting execration ; the neglect to teach the slaves the saving truths promulgated by Him who is their Redeemer as well as ours, cannot be too highly condemned : and these and similar sins have been doubtless punished by the celamities which have fallen on the South. But it should never be forgotten that in these calamities have been involved many, conduct towards their slaves has been wor thy of every praise ; who have cared for, educated, and governed them in a truly paternal spirit, thus rendering their Con dition more happy than generally falls to 'the lot of the Poor in this world. If, as 'some think, slavery be gone forever, we wilibe the last to regret it; but it is well to 'avoid the example of the Pharisee, who, while he condemned the faults of others, forgot his own crimes. The materialism to which we called at tention in a late article is a real plague spot on our moral being. Substituting in terest for . principle, the present for the hereafter it saps • the very foundation of true morality. Dishonesty of every kind, in every depattment - of life, flourishes un• - derit without stint. It removes all the restraints which might prove effectual to prevent evil doing; and substitutes out ward decency for inward goodness. rt is enough that the apple be tair to the sight, be it ever so rotten within • materialism will arises it good, 'This terrible evil arises from our highly developed ma terialprosperity Which is not checked and corrected, much less directed and anima ted by religion. Of religions feeling there is Abundance in individuals ' • but it does not 'contra the masses . Infidelity is openly preached; and has many followers amongst us ;the great truths inculcated by ,cligist Co earning marriage, which are the.very fo hdation of Christian society, ire not onl ignored in practice, but de it nied in theory ; and irreligion has been for some time past constantly gaining ground. We are infordied that the atten • dance it many of the, churches has fallen off since the war began, and no one can pretend that honesty, morality, and vir bre.bave gained during, the nut two years. To , ' thiawe must add tharanmeastired-1 prideand "orerweening national vanity, which foreigners sO.:instly condemn. It i is not that we boast of our real or 1 imikitutry. geed qualities, that we are reedy to attempt every thing.and anything, 1 that , we think our institutions, our civilir• atitiii, our national character "the best, the; world oversaw ;" but, moreover, we' atribute the oredit of all theme things to :ourselves. Jere Coffee and Popper. - In extent Java is about seven hundred miles in length, and varies from eighty to one hundred and forty miles in width.— Its lirea_is. /sae ,*,-/Puttooszto stritzttfleiffetE taco of the country it broken by mountains, but the soil gener ally is rich and productive. The products are rice, sugar, coffee, pepper, spices and a profusion of the finest tropical fruits.— Coffee is cultivated to as great a perfec tion as in almost any other part of the world. It grows upon large bushes and the grains of coffee are formed two in a berry about the size and shape - of our com• mon - plum. The skin of the berry i , about as thick as that of the plum and the color, when ripe, a pale scarlet. The bash-is very productive. Every branch is loaded with berries, which grow two in a : place, on the opposite side of each other, and about an utch and a half apart. When ripe the skin bursts open and the grain of coffee falls on the ground; but a more general way is to spread some thing under the bush and shake the coffee down. After the outer skin is taken off, there remains a kind of husk over each kernel which is broken off (after being well dried in the anti) by heavy rollers.— The coffee after this needs winnowing. in order to be freed from the broken parti-- cles of the bush. It has been said by some writers that one bush with another will not average more -than' a pound of coffee. Black pepper is also raised to some ex• tent on the Island of jaVa, but SumatrA, which lies, just across the Straits, is by far the most celebrated for this commodi• ty. Her pepper is the finest and most abundant of any one country in the world. Black pepper grows on a vine very Much pike our currants. There is this difference however: the currant has each its own die• tinct stem, but the pepper has not ; every jrain grows hard unto one common stem, ust es each grain of Indian corn does on the cob. • The color of the pepper when first ripe, is almost a bright red, and chan ges to the dead black by being exposed to the atm. . . , The white pepper is nothing more than the common hlkleith_the outer akin tai,- ken oft . ft:is rat ioaked. until this skih bursts open, which is then rubbed off, and the grain dried. The white is not con sidered so pungent as the black, though it is ni er and more 'expensive, as more labor is • ecessary in order to prepare it. 1-- kN.G GOODS N iir tou lw ol . g . rrst c o A. oL L .toTk li ro ATTEN.
