(He testified precisely as he wrote in his letter publishedafter the election.) Now, if this statement of Mr. Beyer is true, there can Ifinb, doubt about the eta- PloYmentof unlawful means to secure the election of General Simon Cameron to ,the Senate of the llnitedAtates. But the comm . ittee . had- .zother testimony before them in regard to the transactions related by Dr. Boyer; audit becomes necessary, in the eight.of that testimony, to examine hie clatmsto truthfulness. - That there were, within a few days pre vious to the Senatorial elections, repeated interviews . between Mr. Blitbst.: and Mr. 'BOyer - bitinbe 6e doubted, because they not only both testify to this fact, but their ttatirstonY4 corroborated:by that of Capt, , ChriMman, Dr. Early, Michael - K. lyery 'and Mr. Vaughan. They also agre in regard It the private interviews ha be.' tween Dr - I - Boyer and Gen. Cameron;' first at the Staid Capital Bank, and afterwards at Dr. Boyar's room, ialhe Pennsylvania a - 061m ; knit in this thay.:bre sustained by they testimony of. Capt. -Chritzman, Dr. . 14tly, and Mr. Vaughan. They agree,. miteovetas to . the armng.mepte and preparations which were made to visit Gen. Cameron at his own - house at the re quest of Mr. Brobst ; and as to the fact that such preparations were made, we hale the testimony of Dr. „Early. ,There finis() a marked. agreement be tiftien the - testimony of -Dr. Boyer and the of John J. _Patterson. They both testify that they met in Harrisburg on the Friday immediately preceding the Senato riarelectiat that they went to Reading on-the afternooniel thaLday on the Le banon Valley cars, and Gen. Came-- roe 'was ottine same train; that arrange ments were there made 'between Mr. Pat tereon and "Dr. Boyer to meet Gen. Cam• eron at thehouse of hieson, J. D. Cam erka, on the, next evening-5 that they met according tip, appointment, and that on the following Tuesday mornin'g, the day of the Senatorial election, Dr. Boyer, -:at the request of Afr. Piftteraon, went to Patter son's room; in Herr's Hotel, where be found Gen;Cameron, and afterwards met Dr. Faller. , , F only a tew of the numerous point* of coincidence between the testi. mot y of Dr. Boyer and thdi -of Messrs. St-Aid and Patterson. Indeed; there is almost a perfect agreement between them, except in regard to the alleged ntoney transactions. It must be evident tErevery kne that, in the interviews which Mr. Brobat and Mr. I?atterson had with Dr. Boyer, their only object was to, influence him, itireortie means 4Pther, to vote for atiti."Clffiteilin - for United States Senator. But by what means did they attempt to accomplish this object? ' - Eire the testirdony" of these three wit nesses involves a direct contradiction.— fd3oyer asserts that SKr: Brob4tf told Vieille was Sailthorizett Geif.'Cameron to. offer five thousand dollars for a vote, - hich Mr. Brad denies, suid. that Gen. Cameron and Mr. Patterimn positively agreed -to give him twenty thousand dal larsti.and finally', twenty-five thousand dol lam, iii-ordet to secure his vote for Simon . cro4whichisamphatically denied by Ittf:Plitterion. We are, therefore, bottnd to conclude either that 14 statements of Bayer;:oit 'the one 'hand, or those of Mr. Pattnrson and Mr. Brobst on the oth er, in regard to the pecuniary considers,- tions k are downright and deliberate false heeds. Men-always" act from motives. It . is, .kive there coul d afore,gi ' h letimate to inquire what mo ve influenced Dr. Boyer in thia_aingle cask It conitt not have been fear s for surely he hid rib more to fear from telling the truth, than from a declal tion of falsehood. It, could not have been the hope of gain, for it is impossible for any onei6.see how he could have expect ed any benefit from the utterance of any such false statement. Nor could he have been actuated :by a malevolent or revenge ful feeling, for there is n 3 evidence of the existence of any such feeling on the par of Boyer against Gen. Cameron or any of his friends. Moreover, to suppose,' any man .I corild . and; knowingly ] charge upon his felloW-man, without some. strong,p2qtive, a crime whichlwould for-, ever bleat:the reputation of its . perpetra tbr in We community, and then call upon! DAILY POST. The Recent Canvaas for Senator. Report of- the 'Comatltteei Ap pointee' to pireattipete certain t e Reeent Canvass for ire SAata a Senator. The committee appointed under the relit oktion,of the 20th 'January 14t, to in quire whether Unlawful means were em ployed to,secure the, election of a Vnited States Senator, with authority to sthitl for! persons endpapers, beg leave to offer the following report : That they haveleld for thirty-three see eionif since that time and examined thirty falsehood, It is not reasonable to, expect men to criminate themselves. Let ne look at this testimony from an otherlstand•point. Truth is alwa's con sistent With itself. The statement of Mr. Beyer-is plain, straightforward, 'eircum stantial, - bears upon the face of i 4 no, ap parent diserepancy. It is corroborated in nearly all "its leading details by the testi mony of Messrs. Broke and Patterson, and in several particulars by that of Cap , tain Chritzman, Dr. Early, Mr. Vaughan, ['Michael K. Boyer, and Dr. Fuller, all of ;'which may be seen by a reference to the 1 testimony of these. gentlemen, herewith I submitted. But now let us take 'a brief survey of the sentiments of Messrs. Brobst and• Patterson. Mr. Brobst met General 'Cameron - some weeks before the meeting of Legiidature, bat no conversation passed between them -in regard to the election of a United States - Senator. Subsequently, without any re- I quest from any one, and of his dwn accord,' he came to Harrisburg, went the. same evening to see General .Cameron, find of frfeted him his servines, withciut being asked 1 :to do so, to secure his election to the •Senate of the United States. Het-again returned-to Harrisburg, stoppeti at Herr's Hotel, but soon removed - to the Pennsyl vania House, where Doctor Boyer then had his rooms. Here he met with Doctor Boyer, and had repeated interviews with him ; invited him to Gen. Cameron's house; provided horsecii and carriages on two occasions to convey I him there ; visited the General three or I four times at his• residence ; became the medium of communication between him and Boyer, and made the arrangements for several meetings between them. All this was done by Mr. Brobst, be it remember ed, at considerable cost both of time and money, and without any arrangement (,whatever with Gen. Cameron, or any ' body else, by which he was to be reim- I horsed. This is possible, but is it at : all 1 probable? 1 . • --Bat again : Mr. Brobst is positively im plicated, as other testimony than that of Dr. Boyer proves, in an alleged I bribery. Mr. John Hancock testifies that Mr. Brobst told him he had the authority of General Cameron to - use money to secure his election, and that any arrangementa he ,might make, within a reasonable amount, would be immediately complied with by Cameron. The testimony of Michael Boyer on this subject is that Mr. Brobst told him that he was authorized to offer ten thoilsand dol lars. It is aim) an evidence that Mr. Brobst told Mr. Po tteiger, a member of the House, .thot if he would vote for General Camer on he could made an independent fortune; that he 'would guarantee to him five thous and dollars in hand,,and a position worth forty thousand dollars, ; that if he would name the day he would bring General Cameron down to Barks county to make a final bargain on that; he had better let party gp to the devil and make his :looney. • The testimony of John J. Patterson. as already intimatedicorroboratee that of M r. Beyer in nearly every point, They agree be to their trip to Reabing on the Lebanon 1 Valley Railroad ; their interview on the cars ; their arrangements to meet General 'Cameron at the house of his son previous to the Senatorial election: a meeting, ac cording to this arrangement, to have an interview between Gen. Cameron, Dr, Boyer and Senator Fuller, in Mr. Pater son's room at Heree Hotel. Bat Mr. Patterson denies most emphatically that he or Gen. Cameron offered Dr. Boyer money or anything else aaa means of in ducing him to vote for Cameron. This, whether true or false in itself, is what mightbe expected under the circumstances, according to the statement of Doctor ,Boy er of what Mr. Patterson said he would testify, if the investigation should be in stituted. There are .other 'statements in the testimony of Mr. Patterson that are worthy of consideration. R e says he came to Harrisburg at the request or suggestion of no'one. That he arrived here on the Bth of January, between five and six o'clock in the afternoon. That after supper he , met Gen. Cameron by accident at the Post ! Office, and was fnformed by him that he was not a candidate for United States SOW , ator. On the next day he sought an terview with Dr. Boyer, in order to ascer tain whether he really intended to vote. for General Cameron. That after having some conversation with Dr. Boxer, on their way to Reading, he had no faith in him, and concluded that he would advise Gen. Cameron not to trust him, and that Gen. Cameron had said he would have nothing to do with him. Still, however, as the testimony of Dr. Boyer and Mr. Patterson shows, they persisted in holding in terviews with br. Boyer, in order to se cure his vote for General Cameron. All this service Mr. Patterson performed with out fee or reward from any one. There is one other point in Mr. Patterson's testi mony that may be noticed. He'says that he was present during the whole time of the interview between Senator Fuller, General Cameron,_ and Doctor Boyer, at his own room in Herr's Hotel. Accord ingly, he relates in his testimony the con versation which took place on- that occil• Bat the testimony of Senator Faller is that Mr. Patterson was not in the room when he was there. Here, then, is a flat contradiction between these two witnesses; but the committee have no doubt from the evidence Wore them, and &ohs all the circumstances of the case, i that the testi mony of Senator Fuller s all literally tree, Mr. Wolf's testimony is 'that Mr. Henry Thomas said to him; "Go ener statepaid how much you will take to vote for Gen; Cain - Iron ; put down the figures." Hammer also in evidence that John T. told Mr. Wolf that he coald make $5,000 by r voting for:General eatneroni •,aild again that he (Mr.:Wolf) make aniee thin; of. it., , • , ' The report concludes with the assertion that if the testimony of these men is true then Gen. Cameron and those already ;in. plicated are guilty.
