The Worst Newa•Yet. ..a.tter, Beltast.Observer, published in Bel fast, Ireland, a copy of which Ines before tts, contains an article in choice English upon American affairs, under the above caption. The editor has jus gathered thesiartling information that the Western States had parted company with the East. Thiii 4 he views as the greatest calamity which, has befallen America ---and con cludes : What Greece lost, and Rome failed to realize ; what slipped through the hands of medieval - Republics; and was stifled in blobd beneath-the Paris gaillOtirle, seemed to have obtained a secure and lasing home on the virgin soil of America, and to flourish with renewed beauty beneath her glorious sky. All that sages prophesied of the influence of liberty ni • sobiety was here fulfilled.. -In her presence the intel lect expanded i energies heretofore un known sprung into active existe ce, and the triumphs which attest the g thus of man and glorify his destiny werechieved. Haughty as the flow of her might rivers, E,. passing with queenly grandeur to I the re gal Sea, was the stride of that nighty peo ple on the highway of renown. •Towering as the mountains, whbse summits peer into the clouds, was their ambition, and deep as the roots of their primeval forests was the love they bore this tavored land. Compared to her, Enrope seemed, lwith all its historical glory, to be but her feeble imitator, and judging of the future by the past, the old world seemed as though it were fated to sink into obscruity before the dazzling splendour of the new, War had tried the strength of the young giant, . , "A. wrest ~. , . won the -.- con es - • luxury his virtue,' and he was, not niteq , .. to the ordeal, and rightly he bore.n his banner the stars which stud the skis, sur mounted by the eagle that looks d fiance o t, at the burning sun. No wonder that the eyes of the world were turned fondl.y and reverentially on such a spectacl . No wonder that the wearied and oppeased gazed on it as a haven of rest, a d the young bounded to it withthe wild e r of sympathetic . ardour. When the civil war broke out, rind this wondrous !lean* , k was disarrange. of the.. thousand who mourned and • the few -who----rejoiced at it there werenone who' thought that the first fratricidal blow heralded the chapter I of miseries that - ensued,- or world I have led to the consummation that seenrs ap-' I proaching, The wisest saw in the strug- I gle but the ordeal through which every nation in its onward career hastb pass— ' the ordeal which_ tests individualeaS well l as communities, and which, when gurri ' ved, contributes to stability. The Bishop of Natal has published the following reply to the Episcopal Remon strances: Mr Lorin ARCHBISHOP: I have seriously considered the address which has been forwarded to me by your grace, signed by a great number of the archbishops and bishops of t'he Church. of England. In re ply, I feel obliged to say that I am unable to comply `with the suggestion therein con • veyed to me, that I should resign my Episcopal charge. I trust that I yield to none of your lordships in a heartfelt rever- ' ence for the Holy Scriptures. Bat cer tainly I do net believe, as the words of, the address seem to imply, that your lord ships do believe that "all our hopes for eternity rest" on the literal historical truth of such a narrative as the scrral account of the Noachian Deluge. Bat ' must refer to my books for a statement ot the reasons which justify to my own mind the course which lam taking. To resign my office would be to admit that my con duct has been legally or morally wrong, which lam very lar from feeling. Rather, I am persuaded that my duty to God and the national church, through which I have , received, in the same manner as your lordships, that Episcopal commission ' which we have no power of abdicating, re quires me to persevere in the task which 1., have undertaken—namely, to set befori the English church the real facts of the case in regard to the composition of the ' Pentateuch, in accordance with the most trustworthy results ot recent criticism. I venture to acid that the progress of true religion appears to me to be grievously impeded in this country by the contradic tions which undeniably exist between the traditional notion of the historical truth of all the narratives contained in the Penta teuch and the conclusions of science, as now brought within the comprehension even of the youth of both sexes by the general extension ot education. And it is my firm conviction that this subject de serves, more than any other at this time, our most serious consideration, and, if possible, our united action, as bishops of the national church. I am, my lord arch bishop, your grace's very faithful and obedient servant, - London, March 6. J. W. NATAL. --- Richmond Gossip. The Memphis Appeal has a Richmond setter of the 17th ultimo, containing the following gossip ; • Two eons of Beverly Tucker, Esq., have reached town, direct f:om Paris, via New York and Baltimore. They are bright boys, 14 and 16 years of age- At Martins burg they werearrested, and, upon being brought before the Federal General, were subject to a rigorous (very) cross examin ation. Upon being asked if he knew Mr. Slidell, and answering in the affirmative, the eldest boy was desired by the Geneial to tell what Mr. Slidell was in the habit of t.oidfin when they met in Paris.-1 "And wiliraftilif-wzrNfaitzteiti him?" He said, "Good bye, my boy." The young Tuckers were allowed to come through under promise of not revealing anything of the disposition of the Union troops in the neighborhood of Martins burg. Dr. George W. Bagby, editor of the Southern Literary Messenger and the "Hermes" correspondent of the Charles ton Meroury,:was married on the 16th, at St. Paul's Church, - to Miss Park Chamber layne, of this city. Dr. Holland, in a card published in the Dispatch, disclaims having borne as prom inent a part in the capture of the Harriet Lane, as was attributed to him in my let ter of a fortnignt since. • We are to have another daily paper in Riehinond—the Evening .Gazette—to be shortly issued under the editorial manage ment of Mr. M. A. Malaby, a gentleman at one time connected with the press in Macon, Georgia. Six dailies will certainly afford the citizens of the capital reading enough for their reflection. • EAL ESTATE SAVINGS INSTI7- TICE. incorporated by the Legishlture of Pennsylvania. PITTSBURGH PRODUTE MARKET •OFFICE OF TAE DAILY POST.} Saturday, March 28th, 1863, Remarks—The weather is again pleasant for outdoor transactions, but` unfortunately about this time there is very little to transact. With a good stage of water, we have no boats to do the business offered. We hope soon to announce the resumption of navigation, but we heve no right to complain—other cities have been served the same. way. The Government mazt be served_ come what will. The demand for the leading ar ticles was not very active, the sales made being Principally for local purposes. There was a dif ference of opinion between buyers and sellers. Flour—The market continues dull without any prospect of an immediate improvement. In Cin cinnati, New York, Philadelphia and Boston, Flour has steadily declined with only a limited j demand. Holders in our market still hold on for the old rates, which buyers are unwilling to give; hence beyond what is required to meet the wants of the home market we have but few sales to re port. Oil continues dull, prices tends downward; some sales have been reported at low prices. Fish—The demand has improved, and an active demand has sprung up with a number of sales to the trade. There is a good stock on hand. Grain—There is but little doing in this article, for the best °fall reasons, the gooks to operate on are very limited; the market closed steady. The receipts were Light.. Groceries—We have to no Lice a steady market, and a fair demand for home, use; prices have undergone no change. Butter— j Market firm. The receipts for some time have been very limited. Cheese—The demand has ! inv- I proved under large sales. Some of our dealers iffigellizeituainht advance. There is a fair Flab—The market for some firm, prices tending upward. Sales of 25 lilt bbls White Fish, $66v6 25. Herring—Sales of AI bbls Lake, $5; sales 10 bbls Halifax, $5. Mackerel— Sales 10 bbls large No. 3, $9; 8 bbls do 00; 20 bbls Medium No. 3,57 and 5 bbli No. 1,515. Bacon—Firm with a good demand. Sales of 8,500 IDs Shoulders, 6o; 2,500 lbs Sides, 734@8c; 5000 lbs Plain Hams, 8%@854c; 3000 lb/ SC Hams, wsde Flour—We have no change to notice whilst buyers and sellers continue to hold on to their present opinions, transactions will be restricted to the retail trade. The nominal rates are: Extra, $6 50@6 75; Extra Family. $7, 7 25@7 50. Lime—Sales 25 bbls Louisville, $1 25. Klee—Sales 12 tierces, 83c ib Salt - -Sales 140 bbls at $1 70@/1 75. ' baled Fruit—The market was.steady; sales of 60 bushels Peaches $3,5@3,50; sales 85 bush. Apples at $1 40@1,50, 011 sk—Market. dull, especially for Refined. Sales 110 bbls in Bond at 240; 81 bbls do at 23c; Crude—The market was not very active; sales 1,330 bbls on private terms. The nominal rates are: in bulk, 8'46)8.3ic. Cheese—Market - very firm; sales 75 boxes W. 11.., 14o; 25 boxes Goshen, Mc. Apples—A good article is becoming scarce. Sales 40 bbls at $2 7503 00. Sacks—Sales 3,500 to Government at 9c per bushel. PROVISION MARKET. - • " • Provisions are for the while almost without a market. Lard has no attraction for buyers; and woald have no attention from them just now, except at figures that would make the venture of an in vestment come within very certain range of bringing a return under the worst circumstances. Boxed Meats, Mess Pork and Bacon cannot be quoted with any degree of accuracy. Neither buyers nor sellers offer to do anything. feb2o;6md ISIVEK NEWS The river is still receding slowly, with over 30 feet in the channel, and ten feet over the Falls. The Lower Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee are In fair boating order.. Freights are offering freely for all- points, with no tonnage, the demand for Government having monopolized all the boats, both large and small. The St Cloud, for Pittsburgh; Emma, for Mays ville: Convoy for Madison, and Armenia and Al len Collier, for the Lower Mississippi, comprise the departures—all with full cargoes. The St. Cloud and Emma were crowded with passengers. The Lady Franklin and Lady Pike have left Memphis for the Yazoo Pass. The Key West, No 3, in charge of Ensign John Rogers, U. S. Proposed to the Sunflower. thence down to its month, below Yazoo City, via Lake Washington, Deer River and Eagle Bend. All was quiet at the fleet; no further news from the Yazoo Expedition. Louisville The riveiris rising pretty fast at this point, with 12 feet water in the channel last evening. Heavy rains fell yesterday, and the weather is still cloudy and mild, threatening more rain.
