EDITOR—Dsar Sir:—Having sel dom seen anything in the colums of your , paper regarding .the sth Pennsylvania Cavalry, commanded by Col. David Camp bell, of Pittsburgh, and which contains two companies (L and M,) also from Pittsburgh. I take the liberty of address ing you a few lines, regarding their we. fare:. We are encamped, at present, on the Peninsula; betiveen Yorktown and Wil liamsburg, about a mile from the former place and one mile from the old battle field. We have made several successful reconnoissancess lately. A. few mornings ago, the sth and 6th squadrons started just before daylight on a reconnoitering expe dition, under the command of our worthy Captain, Anderson Faith, of Pittsburgh, then in command of the regiment, in the absence of Col. Campbell. When about; one mile outside of Williamsburg, the party divided, the sth squadron took the Richmond road, and the 6th the Centre ville road, under the command of Lieut. Fittes t .. of Company M; after proceeding about eight miles, to • &she's Mills, the Lieutenant was informed that two of the "flowers of chivalry" had just left there; he at once ordered "trot march," and Lieut. Galliset, of Company L, took com mand of the advance guard, After trotting about a mile, we came in sight of the two secesh, who afterwards proved to be a Lieut. and private ofthe 15th Virginia Reg- iment. After coming up to them, the ; Lieutenant in command crdered them to "halt," which they refused to do, but I turned and fired several shots at us, one of which took effect in the knee of Corpo ral Ford, of Co. L, who, on receiving the shot, raised his carbine and shot the secesh private dead on the spot, whereup on the other gave himself up to Lieuten ant Galliset. We then proceeded to what I is called the "Burnt Ordinary," about /2 miles from Williamsburg, and, seeing no more of the Confederates, we returned to camp. We have made one another re connmsance since, but when within sight of the enemies' pickets, they took to the woods, their horses and equipments fall. ing into our hands. Col. David Campbell, the commander of the regiment and Mili tary Governor of Williamsburg, is a per fect gentleman and an efficient officer; h e 1 1 is well liked by those under his command. Adjutant Wm. G. McCandless, of Pitts burgh, has also gained the good will of all, by the generous and impartial manner, in which he,discharges his various duties. Many thanks are also due to our able and efficient Quartermaster, Mr. David Bowers, also of Pittsburgh, for the gentle manly and expeditions manner in which he 'discharges his 'duties. The health and condition of the regi ment is very good at present, and the men have got pretty comfortable winter quar ters. Roping these few lines will find room in the columns of your paper, as the numerous friends of the 6th squadron would like to hear from them. I remain yours, tte., R. R. A., THE CHANGE• OP COMMAN DEES. A correspondent remarking on the con fusion suddenlyNoccasioned by the remo val of Gen. McClellan, remarks: His successor had been appointed, but he felt and confessed himself unable to grasp the situation. Aides-de-Camp came galloping up to what had been sheadquar ters, from important points twenty-five miles distant, with dispatches from corps commanders and commanders of divisions, —dispatches of the ut most moment. "Such and such a movement, which you ordered, has been successfully executed, but a subsequent reconnoisance discovers the enemy in force in my frbnt. Shall I attack? or what shall I do? In my new position ? who am I supported by? Who is on my right? Who on my left?" "I am no longer authorized to give orders to Gen. So and So." The dispatch is read to Gen. Burnside, or a similar one just af ter McClellan has left for Trenton. What does Burnside know, what can he know, about the proper answers to ten or twelve similar dispatches? He cannot—it is im possible, in the nature of things, for him to give the proper answer, or to issue the order that McClellan would have sent.— In the mind of the latter, the whole plan of the campaign is spread out like a beau tiful map. Every movement both of his own army and that of the enemy, has been anticipated and provided for. But, in the ' mind of his successor, everything must be confused and mixed up. The corres pondent of the New York Times, a warm admirer of Burnside, says of him, in that paper of yesterday: "This morning early I saw him walking up and down the balco ny of the hotel which he makes his head quarters, inkan absorbed, distraught con dition, seemingly overwhelmed by the weight of the responsibility resting upon him." No wonder; no wonder. There was only ONE mind equal to the weight of that awful responsibility. The conse quence of all this is, that since last Satur day the whole army has stood still. It is paralyzed, just as a man would be paral yzed if his head was cut off, even though the executioner should try to stick upon his shoulders the beautifully sculptured marble head of, a Caster or a Hantubal. The American Soldier. The Paris Pays publishes an extract of a letter written by Gen. Clnseret, a French officer now in the service of the United States, in which he says, of the soldiers under his command: • "After two months of campaign and suffering such as I never endured, even in the Crimean war, where we never were in want of food, nor exhausted by long marches, I can speak to you knowingly of the American soldier. Darien all that time we have been march ing night and day, oftentimes without bread, and 'half of our men shoeless, ex posed to a chilly rain without shelter, tent or village. .Welntve:thus walked between 160 and 200 miles. Brit that which, in my opinion, makes'the American soldier the first in the world—the equal of the French soldier—is that I never heard him utter a complaint or a grumble. I never was compelled to inflict a punishment upon him. When I ordered a straggler to fall in, he used to show me his naked feet, and hurry on as much as he could. I have but a word to express my opinion of the American soldier. He adds to the quali ties of the French a patience and resigna tion which I did 'not think it possible for a soldier to acquire." THE Winsted Herald says that there are three hundred and twenty one lawyers in 'Connecticut. They are a luxury we can afford to do without; why can't they_go to the war? they - would beat the Black Horse Cavalry at Charging. Latest from Richmond. Speoiat Dispatch to the Star, FAIRFAX STATION, Nov. 24th. t Henry Demey, ighth U.S. Infantry, a paroled prisoner, ho has just come from Richmond, repor that he saw, in that city, the conscript going out with tools in their hands to work on the fortifications of the city. One hundred went out at one time. He also salw fifteen siege guns on their way out of the city, on trucks drawn by ten or twelve horses each, passing through the street he was on. People said there they were prepared in front and rear to receive us. 1 He left Richmond on the 16th of this month, and saw about 12,- 000 infantry between Culpepper nud the Rappahannok, and the railroad trains fall of provisions coming from Gordonsville for Culpepper. 1 . e arrived in Warrenton last Thiirdy. On g that day Hampton's Legion, with 2,2 0 infantry, and four pieces of artillery, came ii i into Warrenton by t e Sperryville turn pike. He left Warre ton on Friday morn ing, and took the road, d to Salem, where he arrived at night. He that the in• habitants there expectedJackkson that night and that they prepared food for his soldiers. They say j that Jackson will march to Warrenton u the rear of Burn side. - He also spoke at•, alem with Lieut. Halleck, - a nephew, as he says, of the commanding general. ' The lieutenant be longs to Stuart's Cavalry, is wounded in the arm, and was hidden in Salem, in Maddock's house, when our troops were there. All seems to be ,inietlto-day about L'ul. Run, Chantilly and Centerville. A trairs at itilehtutoad. The Examiner says: "Thursday night seveal of the Yankee prisoners confined in he Libby prison escaped by lowering themselves from one of the windows. They! were missed at roll call next morning, and no satisfactory evidence being given by the guard, Capt. Turner ordered them under arrest. They were confined in Castle 'launder to await the examination. None of ihe eneaped prisoners have been heard from. "The negro market has shown consid erable activity during the past week. He takes ground for.al vigorous prosecution of the war, and pro- , poses a reserve force of tea thousand men' for the State, to be discharged in the spring in time for their farming operations. How to raise this force he leaves to the Legislature to decide. The State has no authority in the matter what ever ; the only power given to the Gover nors of States under General Orders No. 99, from the Wet, Departmeit, is to "de- 1 signate rendezvaAs," 'appoint command ants," receive reports of the election of officers, and to , stominate Provost Mar shals for the State.
