To Mr. Wm. Hastings, &gentleman who spent some of the best year of his life in Brazil, we are indebted forth° following account of an adventure with a jaguar in one of those dark and mighty Brazilian forest , : These ferocious and formidable animals, we will rem i ark by the wayrivere formely much more numerous in the Brazilian forests than at the present day, they hav ing, oflateyears, been extensively hunted by the natives, both on account of the bounty paid by the government for their destruction, and for the beauty and value of their skins. The are generally about the size of a large wolf, of a brownish yellow, with black circles and spots along the upper parte, the skin gradually soften ing down to a pale , yellow, and approach. ing to white about the belly, legs, and feet. They steal upon their prey like the t;ger, which in fierceness and strength they much resemble. They are powerful enough to kill a horse, an ox ; or a male, and carry off or drag away the dead body afterward. "One night," says our informant, Mr. Hastings, 6 . as I lay encatnped: in a dense forest, on the bank of one oflho tributa- ries of the the mighty Amazon, with my guide and four negro servants; ill around ate, I was startled from my 4dambers by 3 uci a screeching, howling, a4.yelling as E pray heaven I may never hilig_agE&L L umped up with my ideas all 'bewildered md confused, aud for some moments .ould not tell whether I was on earth or [own in that nameless region which I hope I ever to reach. My camp fire had pretty ell gone down, but was still light enough t show me the black, shadowy - forms of y attendants, dancing and howling about e like so many fiends. "As soon as I could shake my senses t gether a little, and comprehend that I s living among mortals, I let out my v ice to its very highest pitch, which 1 d übt not could have been heard a mile o , and in stentorian tones demanded the a il c use of this poctiirnal tumult. "A jaguar, master! a jaguar among the m les! ' yelled every voice, in reply to my question. 'Well, if there were forty jaguars, in =ad of one, they might have been scared • fits by this time." said I, "so cease •r infernal yelling and, like reasoning lan beings, tell all you know about the : ter." self by secreting myself in the thicket, and frying my marksmanship upon the vultures , t hat came in quest of the remnaut left by the destroying beast. I was fortunate enough to kill six before the guide and hunters appeared upon the scene, a feat of which I was quite proud. "My Indian guide returned about noon, with his Indian friend Cotantin, with three more experienced hunters, and six dogs in ' muzzle and in leaah. Cotantin was a small, wiry man, straignt as a needle, with jet black eyee, and a' rather bright, in• telligent countenance. Ile seemed to be in the very prime of life, and his compact, sinewy limbs were free from all restraint, his only costume being a strip of green cloth about the lions, and a band of fee there around his head. A how and. sheaf' of arrows, a long spear, and a knife, were his hunting implements. He made no ~ use of firearms , considering thorn too noisy. His companions were armed and dressed like himself, but two of them carried each a lariat and a large sheep-skin with the wool on it. What this latter was for I could not imagine then, but had a chance to see it used before night. ( To be Continued.) PINNSYLVANIA RAILROAD CREW TP M.
