So wonderful was the dis covery then considered that Krapt, an em• inent philosopher of the day, gave Brand three hundred dollars for the secret of its preparation. Krapt then traveled, and visited nearly all the courts of Europe, ex shibiting phosphorus to kings and nobles. In appearance the article resembles bees wax, but is more transparent, approach ing to the color of amber. Its name, which is derived from the Greek, signifies "light-bearer," and is indicative of its most distinguishing quality, being self luminous. When exposed to the air it shines like a star, giving out a beautiful lambent, greenish light. Phosphorus dis solves in warm sweet oil ; and, if this phos phorized oil be rubbed over the face in the dark, the features assume a ghastly up pearanc. The origin of phosphorus is the most cu-cious tact concerning it. Every other known substance can he traced to earth or air; but phosphorus seems to be cifanimal origin. 1 /t . all atiimalA man con twins the most : nnd. of ttie various parts Parts of the body. the brain. by analysis, yields more phosphorus than any other.
