DAILY POST. The lEfalea as IS was The Oesistitetlas as It Is! 4. 7 1Um5114 smatter alieriitiy Paw.. THIIRSD4I MORNING,' OCT. 16 INVASION OP OUR STATE. Our read are aware that the invasion of Maryland ,and Pennsylvania by the re bet armies was, in pursuance of a policy previously decided upon by the rebel' gov ernment. The Confederatea under : the two Lees and Jackson advanceditiat our forces—then commanded by Pope— . and utterly i:onted him in every engage. ment. Lee the ablest of the rebel offi cers, having o easily defeated- us and scat , tered our fo es, doubtless concluded that he would eneounter bat little -opposition in his advan r ae upon Maryland, isolong at least as Pope was in command. Embold ened by thee considerations he pUshed boldly on; hilt his calculations *erg sudden ly interfered with by the retirement of Pope and the re-enatatement of Pile-Mellen to the chief cenumuid. This changed the condition of affairs altogether ;- Lee plan ned his campaign. against Maryland and Pennsylvania, with the helief *tat ' Pope was to be his opponent; but fortunately for the coun ty,- that officerts campaign was so terribly disastrous that imminent (danger of the capitalitselt being captured, caused his 'Ldden dismissal.. Had his campaign ba l i an less disastrous—he being a pet of thole having -mita-ill of our af fairs; he would have been retained, the consequences of which would have been the, utter demoralization of the Union forces under.; his command, and the probe bletrinmpl4of therebels under Lee. But the President in this case' didn't - hesitate —he hadn't fime. The danger= o.thegiiig ernment was too impending, and so he so licited McCiellanta cometo the rescue of the government. He did. 'so; unlike others, whO retired, when they thought their services in the field most needed, McClellan "bent up each corporal agent" to rescue the government from the dan ger and humiliation, to which a charlatan . pretender had reduced it. He gathered together the panic-stricken soldiers of • Pore's nuserable_campaign;_he infused - 2[ spirit and energy into them; -fought Lee's triumphant's'' , ii confideOlegiiinsin the first pitched battle of -the war..• Maryland an -Pennsylvania were-thus rendered *safe; th - j national capital Was out of ' , danger; the Union armies were reinvigorated and re assured, wldie rebellion slunk back to the safety offered upon rebel ground.. After reflecting upon these facts, one will concludesthat the late raid into the entabeilan4 Valley of our—State, was a most audacious undertaking.. And so it was; but iiiiimilar...hicursion is not unlike ,, ly and . wit h corresponding success. Oar authontiesjioth -National .and State, are hemmed iniiby scheming partizans, who are fast drii&ig them to the most danger ous extremities. Instead of the Governor sending their.qUotas to tha-sild Of the gov ernment, they meet and threaten the Pres ident with Op position unless he displaces his ablest t} i neral. This is the reason wily -new raids into our State are undertaken and so easily accomplished. McClellan [[ i has no for of any magnitude. Most Conflicting reportk are in circula tion relative to the alleged, raid. A dig-- patch weal.' eceived this evening from Mt. Union, stating that scouts had just return ed from the interior. They reported that at 9 o'clock this morning no rebels were near Concord. The roads were entirely unobstructed. - The original dispatch which ?fitted the rebels were advancing. on Concord, was sent to Governor Curtin' by' a personal friend, Mr. Junkin; father bf Hod. H. F. Junkin, late CongressmaUfrom the Perry District. This informant 'had so' much faith in the reported advance that he left his house and made his way to the railroad under the greatest difficulty. Dispatches received' this evening froin Col. Mcc lure throwbo light upon the sup posed vements of the rebels. The scouts beyond Chainhersburg have nothing to f report. Cashtown is said to have been visited this morning by sixty rebels, who are said to have spent the preceding night at Tannattsburg. The rebel leadem there is reason to be lieve, expecting to defeat McClellan in the next battle, sent Stuart on his late recon noissance-in force for the -purpose of ob taining a correct knowledge of the topo graphy of Pennsylvania, and be thus en abled to march a large army speedily on Harrisburg, first sending two parties of cavalry to cut railroad communication. One to cut that of the Pennsylvania Rail road at Mount Un".a, the other that of the Baltimore and Ohio below Frederick. Stuart, having accomplished this recon noissance ! withdrew into Virginia. FIFTY THOUSAND REBELS AT CENTREVILLE. LATEST FROM KENTUCKY Ate., dee.. die., dlce. PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 15.—The Bulletin says: A private, letter, written yesterday, at Shippensburg, ' Cumberland county, says we have just received information that the Confederate army are crossinkat Hancock in large forte. If this is correct, you may look fop the nixt battle iu Penn sylvania, and that very soon. The wildest excitement exists here. This report is partially confirmed by a private telegram received in this city last night from Cham bersburg, which says heavy firing has been heard here all day in the direction of Han cock. • NEW YORK, Oct. 13.—The Tribune's special Correspondent with General Sigel sends the following intelligence, dated Fairfax Court Mouse, Oct. 14th: Gen. Stahl, who left. Centreville on Sun day to make a reconnoissance in force, returned this morning from his expedition. He proceeded as far as Aldie without meeting any of the enemy. The enemy were driven back at every point, though no serious figkting took place. General Stahl's force visited Snickersville and Middleburg, and went within a few miles of Poies, and near Leesburg,. making in all a ride of some 80 miles in 24 hours. They Met White's cavalry, .the Loudon cavalry, the 6th Virginia, and a portion of Stuart's at various points on the route. Eighty to nineti prisonersmere taken and paroled at Middleburg,- and twenty to twenty-five were captured at other places, a portion of whom were paroled.. b One of Gen. Stahl's force vim captured by the enemy, but after a chase of six miles, was retaken. A 17nion Soldier cap nred by Stuart's men at Leesburg was also recaptured. Indications of a large camp wasseen near Goose Creek, toward the Potomac, which had probably been occupieLby the cavalry that made the Pennsylvania raid. ;Scouts, to-day, bring information of the concentration of a large force of the enemy, estimated at 10,000, in that neigh ..rhoed. • . _ — The-Berald says; It was rumored in Washington yesterday that a force, amount ing to 50,000, of the rebels had - concen trated at Centreville, a fact which would" seem to tally with other statements, to the effect that the main body'of Gen. Lge's army was moving southward, by way of Thornton's Gap, =from Winchester, sad was moving in the direction of Warren ton on Saturday. It seems somewhat strange that the rebel army should take a course through Thornton's Gap while the Manassas Railroad was open to them from. Strasburg, which is farther North than Thornton's. No official confirmation of the presence of this rebel force at Centre ville reached the Government yesterday.- .. ParLAn ELPHIA, Oct• 15.—The following Congressmen are elected : First District—S. J.
