FRIDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 10, 1562. • The PailadAphia inquirer, the editor of which, though a Republican, is neeithr a Federal officer -holder nor an aspirant fir party honors, has the good ense to sap: hi the sth ward, Cleveland, a draft was made, on Friday last, for sixty-five cou• scripts. It was attended with a good deal of excitement, and a strong military furce was posted to preserve order. The Plain d ruler says: Three of the drafted men were present at a ball, one of them, a poor laboring man —a tailor, we believe—with seven young children. The man was visibly affected, but managed to choke down his grief. Several wealthy gentlemen present an nounced their intention of procuring him a substitute: We hope they will not for get their promise. The other two victims present were young men, whp took the matter very coolly and, at the, end of the draft, grasped each other by the hand, agd indulged in a hearty shake. Neither of them seemed to care much whether school kept up or General Ila'lock and his Volun- A correspondent of the Cincinnati Ca• zetle, writing from Washington, tells the fol lowing: Gen. All decomposing animal matters form most energetic fertilizers, and the collec tion of carcases of animals, the blocd from slaughter houses, the residue from the manufactories of preserved meat, fish :Lc., are all substances which, if given to the soul, would be the source of abundant crops. But these substances are difficult to preserve. The abominable stench they give out prevents their transport to any distance by land or by sea. It is also ex tremly difficult to remove the excess of water they contain, which insensibly aug ments their weight, and at the same time contributes to their more rapid de composition. . To render flesh, blood &c., imputes cent while dessicating and during the time necessary to keep them, but never- Seless to preserve their fertilizing pro perties, so that when added to the soil they may give out the putrefying elements required for the nourishment of plants, is a subject of great importance. To the so lution of this problem, M. Chevalher. son of the distinguished chemist who has done so mach for the advancement of industrial science and pharmacy, has lately direct ed his attention. M. Chevallier has found that a small quantity of acid suffices from two to four per cent of the chlori dine acid of commerce) for partially dry ing blood or flesh - without giving out sen sible 'odor. It is highly desirable that this suggestion should be practicaly tested and, it verified, generally adopted. The London Manure Company, for instance, some time since endeavored to bring into notice animal manure, consisting of the waste flesh of cattle imported from the River Platte, which contained 11 per cent. of nitrogen. The detestable stench of his substance, however, fully accounts for the repugnance of owners and captains to bringing it over. The adoption of some such processes that of M. Chevallier might however, remove this objection, and bring into use this manure, which would prove to be nearly as valuable as the blood ma nure of the same company, containing about 8 per cent of nitrogen. The quan tity of animal matter at present wasted in the conntries of the New World is enor mous. In South America there are killed annually, for their hides alone more than 5.000 000 head of cattle. the carcases be ing le ft to rot.
