Netair ' en Brortnt, D. D., Editor of the En evolopeidia of Religious Knowledge. Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent Medieines in general, through distrust of their ingredients and effects; I yet know of no sufficient reason why a man may not testify to the benefit he believes himself to have received frcim any simple pieparation in the hope that ho may thus contritinte to the benefit of others: I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof land's Germin Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against . thernifor many years, under the impres lon that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixture, lam indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker, Esq ~for the removal of this prejudice lsy proper ,osts, and foroncouragement to 'try them, when suffering froni:great and long continued debility. The use of thiee bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief, and restoration to a degree of 30dilY and mental vigor which I had not felt for ix Months before, and had almost depaired of re aining. I therefore thank God and my friend for Greeting me to the use of them. J. NEW'fON BROWN. PgrLsnittPittl, J une 'Z.3. 1861. Prom the Rev fi Joseph H. Hennard, Pastor 'of the • 'Tenth Baptisl. Ghurch. INTERESTING TALES. IYARATIVES, &c A SAVAGE COMBAT. A fight, between a California Ball and a Grizzly Itioar. A Gne young bull had descended to the bed of the creek in search of a water hole. While pushing his way through the bushes he *as suddenly attacked bye grimly bear. The struggle was terrific. I couhrsee tlie tops of the bushes sway violently to and fro, and hear the heavy crash ofdriftwood as , thetwo powerful animals writhed in the'fierec embrace. A clpud of dust rose from lie spot. It was not distant over a hundr 11 yards from the tree in Which 1 had taken refuge. Scarcely two minutes elapsed. before the bull broke through , the bushes. His head was covered with blood, and great !hikes of„ftesh hung from his fore shoulders. But instead of show ing any signs of defeat he seemed literally to glow with defiant rage. Instinct had sought him to seek an open space. A more splendid specimen of an animal 1 never saw; lithe and wry, yet wonderfully massive about the shoulders, combining the rarest qualities of strength and sym• metry. For a moment he stood glaring at the bushes, nostrils distended, and his whole, form fixed and rigid. But scarcely had I time to glance at him when a huge hear, the largest and most formidable I ever saw in their wild state, broke thin:nigh the opening. • A trial of brute" force that baffles de. scription now ensued. Badly as I had been treated by the cattle, - my:sympathies \ . Were in favor of the bull, which seemed to me to be much the nobler animal of the two. He did not wait to meet the, charge, hut, lowering hie head, „boldly rushed upon his savage adversary: , :- . ,The grizzly was active and wary. No sooner had he . got within reach of the bull's horns than he seized them in his pow erful grasp, keeping his head to the ground by strength and the weight of his body, while he bit at the nose, with his teeth, and raked strips of flesh from hie shoulders with his paws. The animals must have been of nearly equal weight.— On the one side there was the advantage of superior agility and two weapons—the teeth and claws. But on the other greater power of endurance and more inflexible courage. The position thus assumed was maintained for some-time—the bull strug gling desperately to free hie bead, while the blood streamed from his nostrils—the bear straining every muscle to drag him to the ground. No advantage seemed to be gained on either side. The result of the battle evidently depended on the merest accident. wplfhlyd As if by mutual consent each gradually ceased struggling to regain his breath, and as much as five minutes must have elapsed 1 While they were locked in t is motionless but terrible embrace. Sod enly the hull, by one desperate effort, wre ched his head from the grasp of his advertary, and re treated a few steps. The bear stood np to receive him. I now •ivatched with breathless interest, for it was evident that each animal had staked his life upon the conflict. The cattle upon the surround ing plain had crowded in, and stood moaning and bellowing around the corn- : batants, but, as if withheld by terror, none seemed to interfere. Rendered furious ' by his wounds, the bull now gathered up all his euergie, end charged with such iln petimis force and ferocity that the bear, detpite the most terrific., blows with his paws, roped over in the dust, vainly struggling to defend himself.. The lunge and thrusts of the former were perfectly furious. At length b a ~udden and well directed blow of the lead,he got • one of his horns under the be is belly, and gave it rip that brought out a • otted mass cf entrails. It was Ili:parent But he battle must soon end. Both were • 6 ievously wounded, and neither could hold o it much longer. The ground was torn up and cov ered with blood for some distance around, and the panting of the struggling animals became each moment heavier and quicker. Maimed and gory, they fought with the certainty of death—the bear -rolling over and over, vainly trying to avoid the fatal horns of his adversary—the bull rip ping, thrusting and tearing with irresisli . .de ferocity. At last, as if determined to end the con flict, the bull drew back, lowered his head, and made one tremendous charge: but, blinded by the blood that trickled down his forehead, he missed his mark and rolled headlong on the ground. In an instait the bear whirled and was upon him thoroughly invigorated by the prospect of speedy victory; he tore the flesh in huge majses from the ribs of his prDstrate fos. The two rolled over and over in the ter rible death struggle: OA hiug was now to be seen save a heaving, gory mass, dimly perceptible through tl e dust. A few min• uses would have terminated the bloody strife so far as my favorite was concerned, when to my astonishment, I saw the bear relax his efforts, roll over front tho body his prostrate foe, and drag himself eebly a few yards from the spot. His en rails burst entirely through the wound in his belly. The next moment the bull was up, erect and fierce as ever. Shaking the blood from his eyes, he looked around, and seeing the reeking, mass before him, low ered his bead for the final and most des- perate struggle that ensued, both animals seeming . animated by supernatural strength. The grizzly struck out wildly, but with such destructive energy that the bull upon drawing his head, presented a horrible and ghastly spectacle; his tongue' a mangled mass of shreds, hanging from his mouth, his eyes torn completely from their sockets, and his face stripped to the bone. On the Other hand the bear was ripped completely open, and writhing in his last agonies. Here it was that indomitiable courage prevailed; for blinded and maimed as he was, the bull,,after a mo mentary pause, to regain hisfwind, dashed wildly at his adversay again, determined to be victorious even in death. A terrific roar escaped from the dying grizzly.— ith a last frantic effort he sought to make his escape, scrambling over and over in the dust; "but his strength was gone: A few more thrusts from the savage victor and he lay stretched upon the sand, his muscles quivering convulsively, his huge body a resistless mass. A clutching motion of the claws, a groan, a gurgle in the throat, and he was dead. Thel - dll now raised his bloody crest, uttered a deep bellowing sound, shook his horns triamthantly, and Idowly walktd off, not, however, without turning every few steps to renew the battle if necessary. But his last battle was fought. As the blood streamed from his wounds, a death chill came over him. ; He stood for some time, unyielding to thp last, bracing him self up, his legs apart, his head gradually dropping; then dropped-on his knees and expired. Episcopal Clergy in New Orleans. A correspondent of the New Orleans Delta says : "The following is a list of Episcopal clergymen here: Rev. Dr. La. cock, Christ parish; Rev. Dr. Goodrich, of St. Paul's parish ; both Englishmen, and of coarse, in consequence of early prejudices, desiring the dissolution of the Union ; Rev, pr. - Hughes, who has a eon an officer in the celebrated' Washington Artillery ; Mr. 'McCoy. a native of New York, and Mr. Jessup, of Jefferson city, also a native of New lork. . • "Till within afew days we had Rev. Dr. Hawley here; but being suspected of be ing too loyal, he was forced to resign his charge, and has gone worth. During the reign of secession the whole service was said, and of course the President of the rebel States was prayed for instead of him of the United States. But after General Butler came here to restore order out of chaos,' evidently by a tacit agreement, the service has been mutilated by omitting all before the Litany, by which means the prayer for the President is evaded ; yet these men have taken upon themselves vows,, at the time of their ordination, to do their Master's work according to the can ons of the Church, for which they claim apostolic succession." An Austrian Anecdote The Gazelle du Danube publishes the following anecdote:—A naval officer, who was, some time ago, making an excursion in the mountain near Ishel, lost his way, and entered a cottage to ask for informa tion. The mistress of the house offered to send her son to show him the road. The offer was accepted, and when the lad had put the officer in the right path, the latter offered some money as a reward for his services. The boy refused to accept any, and remarked that the soldiers were filways snort of money. The officer in ired how he knew that, and the lad re• plied:—"Why, because I have a brother who is a soldier and he never has any money." This very day my mother has sold our last goose„ and sent him what it fetched." Touche by this artless tale, the officer returned to the cottage, gave the gcod woman three times the value of her goose, and promist d to a'ce care of her son if he behaved well.
