D., Editor of the En cyclopedia of Religious Knowledge. Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent Medicines us general, through distrust of their ingredients and effects; I yet know of no sufficient reason why a man may not testify to the benetit be believes himself to have received from any simple preparation in the hope that he may thus contribute to the benefit of others. I do this the more readily in regard to Roof land's German Bitters, prepared by Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city:because I was prejudiced against them fin' many Years, under the impres sion that they were chiefly en alcoholic mixture, I am indebted to my friend Robert Shoemaker, Ems ~for the removal of this prejudice by proper %Ants, and for encouragement to try them, when suffering from great and long continued debility. The . use of three bottles of these Bitters, at the beginning of the present year, was followed by evident relief, and restoration to a degree of sodily and mental - vigor which I had not felt for ix months before, and had almost depaired of re alising. I therefore thank God and my friend for *eating ma to the use of them. .1. NEWILY:IN BROWN. PHILADELPVIA, Tune 23, 1861. Prom the Rep. Joseph Kennard, Amer e the Tenth Bcgraist Ghrirch. Da. WEDNESDAW MORNING, SEPTE3IIIIER 10, 1802. What did it mean? At a glance I tool:. in the comfortable, even luxurious en rroundings;.and .then my gaze become rivited on a terrible scene which was transpiring in the middle of the room. A woman, still young in years, as I could readily see, and quite handsomely dressed, was I3ing prostrate npon her back, on the floor. Her dress was torn and bloody. her face and ha ids besmeared with gor e , a n d h er whole, appearance vio lently deranged and disordered. "I said the man was rather handsome— he was; but at the same time, he was quite as wickeddooking as he was handsome.— Never shall I forget the glance he darted at me as I tumbled into the room. It teas the look of a fiend. His brilliant black eyes flashed like balls of burning fire, and in their gleaming depths was mirrored every dark crime ia the ..blackened Galen• der. -The glaring devil was resting one knee on the woman'sswel ling bosom, and clasp ing her throat with his hands, till the pow er of utterance was almost taken from her. api ).Iyd "What do you want here?" hissed the taan between his set teeth, and he looked as it he would kill the on the spot, if his hands nett, only iicc "lhe woman moimed, and tried to cry murder again, but i,hu was too choked up to utter the word di.4tinctly. "Ilte next moment she fled from the room, and I could hear the ph-a-pat of her feet descending the stairs . • `• rho man uttered a howl. `°•Philip Donley!' I repeated in complete amazement. "The mime of Phil Durney was notor iously- famous. A more desperate, bloody banded desperad o , w a s nowhere to be found, and for u lung time previous. bur culean efforts had been made to capture the bold, desperate, and succesful burglar chief; fur such he was known to be. "The desperate villain made a powerful wrench; but I am no child, and he did not escape me. "Evidently the rascal had no weapons about him, or I shonld hare fared worse. It was a rovidence for me. His wife he had been beating to death with hie fist. "The last words of the burglar had hardly fallen from his lips whenthe 1 clatter of feet was heard nn.- the stairs, I and, almost instantly afterward, three or four policemen rushed iuto the apart ment. " 'Seize this man l' I quickly cried 'out. 'lt is Durney, the burglar!' " 'A e know it l' slam taneously ex claimed the officers, as they darted across the room. "The robber's wife had sent them up, fiLS it subsequently appeared. "With a fearful oath, Durney again made an effort to escape me, and this time he was successful as he was sudden, my attention being somewhat drawn away to other olecta. A. " few iiesperato bounds carried him i out of the room. The policeman grabbed I at him, but he tore away. At the head ' of the stairs, however, the experienced officers bad placed a couple of their number, and the desperate ;stagier was defeated I i his purpose. "We co lowed the villain. "Cut off from the stairs,Durney dash ed back into the dark hall, where, it appeared, there was a step-ladder lead ing to a trap. and out upon the roof. Quick us lightning. so to speak, he mount ed the steps, threw open the trap, and dashed out upon the house. "We followed as fast as we could. but, when we got out upon the roof, the burglar was two or three houses off, clambering from one building to another, like a cat. "'Stop there, you villain, or I'll shoot you down!' cried one of the police men. "'Shoot if yon dare!' 'was the con temptuous reply, followed by a derisive laugh. • "At this instant the burglar came to a divi, ion of Pix cr eight feet be:ween the SELECT TALE. THE BIRGLAR'S LEAP. A REPORTER,'S3 TORY. "Retrace his steps be could not, with out falling back into our hands, while on one ,side of him was the alley, not less than a dozen feet wide, and, on the other, the yards of the houses. "A leap of mix or eight feet, at a height of three stories, is no trifling matter; but the burglar's only alterna tive was capture. "Meanwhile we were apprraching the villain, though bat slowly, for we hid to be very cautious of our steps. "'lf he 'tempts to jump that.he'll'save the hangman a job exclaimed one of the officers, as we stepped along. "At that moment Durney darted back few paces; And inVo.tantarily halted. The next moment, with a shout of de fiance, he dashed wildly forward, and, almost at the same instant, we saw the desperate villain firing through the air. "The leap was:well: made, and only fell short a very little; bu t ! that little oost the burglar his life. Madly catching at the opposite house, Darnel , missed his hold, and tumbled down, down, down ! A curse of disappointment smote upon the air, and then for a moment all was still. . "The next instant we reached the edge of the roof, and peeped over the dizzy height. As we did so the body of the burglar 'truck the side-walk and was' dashed into atoms. "As soon as ' possible we descended and pothered up the remains, which, the next day, were interred in the peepers' burying ground. Since then nothing has been beard or seen of the burglar's wife.
