AN INTERESTING STORI. You have no faith in the supernatural? I have. You do not believe in necro mancy. or astrology, or in the power of the et it eye? I do. The rea ion for this is, you are Americana,' desended from E ng li s h ancestors, while - I have German blood in my veins, and inherit a reverence for what you sneer at. Were a disembodi ed spirit to arise at my bedside to-night, I should question it, and own to being frightened, while you would throw a ean- dlestiek at its immaterial head, and insist to the last upon its beings buTglarin disguise Yet, mark me, in spite of trenrself, your hair would rise, and your blood curdle, and you would feel what ybu would not acknowledge to the. world. Bah! if such things have no existence, what do our strange shiverings and shudderings mean? I and why do we hok.about us with ,1 awe-stricken eyes • when 'we pass grave- 1 yards after dusk? Km do not, you say. I Are you sure of it? I have never seen a ghost, and I cannot. say I desire the spec tacle. There mustbe an uncomfortable beating of the heart at such a sight. I doubt if many could retain both life and reason through such an ordeal. lam a doctor. Years ago I was very poor and very yoeng. r came from my own country with my diploma, and noth ing else. I found that. the great cities of the new world were full of doctors, young and poor as I was. I left them and went westward. I settled in the . State of Indi ana. It was then one great forest, with clearings here and there forfields of corn. and rude log houses. Anyone led a hard life there And doctor's, it seemed to me, worst of all. Miles and. miles of hard ri ding, through wind and mud, to visit- pa tients who could pay nothing; miles back again to steal a lew moments repose, be fore another announcement of some one being "very bad!" I was skin and bones in a twelvemonth, but that was nothing uncommon in that. part ofthe world. The only wonder is, that I did not have what they called "fever' it agar." I was the only person free from it, for fifty spare miles. Llowever, Iprospered, afte- a certain fashion, and in a year or two, made a con siderable local reputation. The place was growing, and my spirits began to re vive. It was about this time that I first saw; my watch, to which all I have now to tell relates. A cold night intlovember had set in. I was at supper in my little home, t sad enjuying it as only shutter and weary rate, can enjoy food. bon's k what I had; it was "out west," rem mber. Of course, ;here was a preparati n of corn, and a l.reparation of pork; an a prepare tion of whisky; and corn men . pork. and whisky, are the staple articles offered ''out west." I was enjoying my supper, as I have said, and a loud knack at my door was not tine most delightful sound which could hrt.,e broken the silence.— However, I said "Come in!" with as good grace as possible, and a stranger entered. Ile was a tall, broad-shouldered man, in the dress. of a back woodsnian, and his ' , tree (sutures wore a trembled expression. -I-sssw-at. o nest something seritess had-occur ed. —lt's a bad night to trouble you to come so 'Sr.'' ho said, looking at me front aod,•rhi,, tur cup; ••but there's a bad acci dent hapi, ened over at our elearitC, and if you k:n du anything lbr the poor chap, I will be eI:A to 6 ,-, ! it done, more particu larily as 1 helped to shoot him." ••lielpi d to shoot him!•' I said with a start; ••ii hat do you mean?" '•We took him for smite kind of a crit ter; that's how it v.a•s,'' answered my vis itor; "not a purpose, stranger. We think heaps of him. rh sooner hev shot my self " I the man spoke the truth and taking my box of surgical instuments un der mr atm, followed him to the spot wh, , rehi s horse was tied. Mine was al ready saddled; my little darker knew well enough what the yiNit protended, and hail him ready. We were off in a few =- Welds. l'ow words were spoken as we rode I tti,,ng through the darkness. 1 asked 1 wheti:er the wounds were serious, and my companion replied—"Pm afeard they ho, doctor.' ' I asked if the injured man was young or old, and he answered— " Rising forty;" and then, after a few words upon the badness "of the road; we relapsed into silence. At last , L a glimmering light told that we had approached a dwelling, and, with a short, •• We're thar, doctor," my compan ion sprang from his saddle and entered the door. I followed him. The room was feebly lit by flickering candles. About a bed in the centre were grouped five men and a woman, large and broad-shouldered as any of her masculine companions. A child, too, lay crying in its cradle, but no one seemed to notice hint. They made way. for my approach, - tud I saw a figure stretched noon the bed. It was that of a .man with sinewy limbs and weatherbeat en face. His shirt was unbuttoned, and the breast and sleeves were soaked with blood. "'Tain't of no use, doctor," he said, as I bent over him; "I'm a gone coon. Doctor's stuff ain't no account to me now." I did not believe him. His face was not that of a dying man, and the wounds scarcely seemed dangerous. "These bul- lets are bad things to have in one's side," I said, "but men have lived through more than that. Cheer up !" "I ain't down-hearted, doctor," answer ed the man. "I shan't leave no children nor no wife to fret after me and suffer for want of my rifle. I never hey been much afeard of death. But I tell you all you can do 's no use. There's a sign that can't be mistook." The group around the bed glanced at each other, and the woman shook her head at me as though she would have said '"Never mind his words." I did what I could for him. The bullets were extracted, the wounds bound np. He was weak, but not desperately so. I looked at him and smiled. "How now," said I. " 'Tain't no use—the watch is stopping fast." he answered. - . Then, fur the first time, I noticed that beside him on the bed lay a great, old. fashioned silver watch, the case battered, the face discolored ; and that it ticked with a strange, dull sound, as though it were very old and feeble. "The watch has been injured by the bullets, I suppose," said I; "besides, all watches stop at times " "Not this one, strnger," said the wounded man. "They've laughed about that watch a hundred times; now they'll find my story's true,l reckon. That watch and I will stop at th same minute." , The woman at the bedside shook tier head again. "It's an old fancy o' your'n, Mike Barlow," she said ; "you'll live to see the folly of it." "So 'they talk." raid the man. "Now listen, doctor. You've come far to Ise me and done all you could. I'lluive yea that watch. Its money valley amt muc h, b ut , it'll do you service. It was given to me by an old Fnenehßan, out o' (Wady, erbon be no AO. "11 I It had been his father's, and his grand father's, and his .great-grandfather's be fore that; and this is what he told me about it, and this is what you'll 6n3 to be truth'. That watch will tick slow and steady, reglar as the sun, as long as who ever it belongs to is well, safe, and thriv ing. When there's danger coming, it be gins to 'go faster and faster; until it is put, and so loud thatyou can hear it across the room as plain as if you had it in your hand. When death. is coming that watch beginS to atop. It goes slower and slower. Its voice grows hollow, and, when the last breath leaves the body, there's no more sound, to be heard and all you can do won't make it go for a year.— At the end of that time it will start all - of a sudden, and a ft er that time you can read your fat eb it and know your death hour. It was so after old Pierre died. It will be so now. Keep the watch when I am gone, doctor." I could not help looking with some in terest on the battered. time-piece. A strange story bad been woven about ' it, and the marvelous always had a charm for me. [Conclusion on Monday.] AIN Ir SOLDIERS' GOODS!
